AIBU to dislike hearing neighbours' music in my garden?

Sitting in my garden and you can guarantee someone will start playing music, we surround a school field so its a lot of back gardens concentrated in one place. I can't complain that it's rave or too loud, its eclectic and not full blast but it disturbs the peace, I can hear the exact song and it reaches me at the volume I would have in my own garden as background noise.

I am not a big music lover, find it over stimulating maybe and jarring when the music doesnt match my mood.

I understand people want to enjoy their gardens on a nice day but if you want music that badly, wear earphones. I want to hear the outside - trees blowing, regular daytime noise and birds, not your music!

A live in a nice posh area where it’s considered incredibly rude to inflict your music taste on others, so our gardens are all nice and quite apart from birds singing. It’s lovely. No one ever has bonfires either. Bbqs are a rarity too. It depends on the ethical standards of your neighbours OP.

I think most areas are devoid of music in the day but I am FASCINATED with your wannabe middle class existence. How do you know it’s considered rude? Did you ask? Is it in the Xmas round robin from the streets leader? Do neighbourhood watch tell you? What would you do if a stinking rich music producer moved in and fancied blasting some tunes? Round up the neighbours to tell him off? Do they all say things like you do? Are they all thrilled to live in a pseudo posh neighbourhood or are they more used to it?

There would ABSOLUTELY be an email around the neighbourhood stating that ‘it has been brought to our attention by an anonymous source…. Blah, blah blah’. Don’t get me wrong, it’s tiresome that so many people around here are so up their arses, but it’s fabulous that SOMEONE would do something if Dave in number 29 wanted to blast out Shania Twain 24/7. I wouldn’t need to lift a finger.

But what would they do? Emailing someone isn’t actually action 😂 it’s just passive aggressive bossy bullshit.

DS is currently having a music war with the woman in the house behind who has her music playing from dawn to dusk (seemingly, she never goes out). DS has got pissed off today and has put his music on even louder. I feel I like I’m trying to wfh from a festival 😫

Bikenutz · 14/08/2026 13:47

Probably outing but I once lived in Bavaria, where there were much stricter rules around disturbance. There were noise restrictions from 10pm to 7am, 1-3pm and public holidays. People were generally more thoughtful. It was great!

Ah yes but that’s the kind of compliance that made it easy for the Nazis 😉

AnitaCam · 14/08/2026 13:55

I think it’s very very selfish to play music in your garden. Not nice behaviour at all. Noise pollution. Foisting uninvited noise onto others. I think it should be made against the law. Also in parks.

People are so entitled about noise pollution it’s horrid.

mydogisthebest · 14/08/2026 13:58

I agree with you and it drives me mad. I love music but if I want to listen to it I want to listen to my own music not my neighbour's.

My idiot selfish neighbour (who got an eviction notice in February but is still there because he is so entitled) plays awful reggae type music all the time. Sometimes I can hear it indoors.

paintedpanda · 14/08/2026 13:58

I hope my neighbours are reading this thread so they can see how everyone thinks they’re selfish twats for having their music on so loud in their garden 🤞🏻🤞🏻
We were up at 6am and the dog had the zoomies bad, and I so wanted to let her bark and wake them up, but sadly it would have woken up my lovely non-selfish neighbours too.

KrazyKatty · 14/08/2026 14:00

I used to hate it when I lived in a small cul de sac in the city and the neighbour behind played his shitty trance music too loud. I used to go round to complain and he’d turn it down until the next time.

However, I once got pass agg and put speakers in the garden and alternated playing Opera and Gregorian chants quite loud for a short while. He came out and was briefly annoyed until I pointed out that we all have different music tastes and maybe I don’t like his music, so why would he like mine? He was much better after that and kept it permanently toned down.

These days DS often has band practice at ours and they mostly play punk rock or heavy metal, which can be quite loud.

Thankfully, we now live in the middle of nowhere surrounded by fields and you can’t hear them playing at all when you walk down the drive. There’s no houses within about half a mile either.

Two of his band mates also live rurally so nobody gets offended by them practising.

Crochetandtea · 14/08/2026 14:02

It’s inconsiderate to always play music that your neighbours are always able to hear. I really struggle with noise and know I wouldn’t cope. I can’t cope with YouTube sounds on phones or the noises of games etc. Ticking clocks or tapping either. I have a beautiful grandfather clock and the ticking drives me nuts so I rarely wind it up 😢

Crochetandtea · 14/08/2026 14:04

If people want to listen to music in their gardens they should be the ones using headphones. You don’t expect the person not making the noise to have to avoid the noise? Society is going downhill fast. Is it Germany that have silence rules on Sundays ? We need those.

People were more law abiding for sure. Maybe it’s because it was quite a naice area. But for whatever reason, the peace and regard for others was worth it.

Compliance or consideration for others ?

I don’t know, if faced with Nazis I’d rather my population had a bit more spunk tbh

Dappy777 · 14/08/2026 14:18

The problem with modern Britain is that there are just too many people. Developers take advantage of the demand, build tiny rabbit hutch homes and jam them on top of one another. So you have 12 houses on a piece of land suited to just four. You only need one noisy person and they then ruin everyone's life.

We have a problem with noisy cars round here. People modify their exhausts so they screech and backfire. I am often woken at five in the morning by these idiots going to work. We don't take noise pollution seriously enough. It ruins lives.

heartsinvisiblefury · 14/08/2026 14:22

The people who do this are ignorant, entitled idiots. They haven’t got the brain cells to put up a banner so they play the music to let people know.

Thepeopleversuswork · 14/08/2026 14:24

I couldn't get that excited about someone playing non-offensive music quietly in their garden, to be honest. And the idea that music is "overstimulating" suggests that you might be quite anxious generally.

I do think its important to be respectful of people who live around you but I think it's unrealistic, unless you live somewhere very rural, to expect to live in a hermetically sealed bubble where you are completely unaware of the existence of other people.

Whosthetabbynow · 14/08/2026 14:27

Neighbour next door but one loves drawing attention to herself though fuck knows why. It’s very quiet here but her radio is on at full pelt. She doesn’t even lower the volume for the adverts. Selfish idiot

Mischance · 14/08/2026 14:28

I am very sensitive to noise pollution.

People playing music that disturbs the peace of others hits a spot with me that is best left unvisited! How bloody dare they!

Backedoffhackedoff · 14/08/2026 11:48

I really think you should step back and acknowledge this is a you problem and start thinking about/ practising coping strategies. There is a reason loud music is generally banned after 11pm only- so you can sleep. The rest of the time it’s not actually anti social in the true sense of the word

there are so many people now who just can’t cope with the existence of other people and whilst that’s fine, other people are a reality of life and you can control your reaction to it

I think it might actually be a you problem @Backedoffhackedoff . Do you play your music loudly enough that your neighbours are forced to listen? Do you ever consider that other people might not enjoy your taste in music, or might just prefer the sounds of nature...birds singing, insects buzzing, children playing? Have you ever tried listening to your music via headphones when you're outside?

Out of curiosity, what happens when there are several different near neighbours, all playing different music at a similar loud volume? I imagine it would be an absolute cacophony.

BCBird · 14/08/2026 14:36

Loove music. I don't however expect anyone to listen to mine. I think playing music in the garden is unsociable

I think it’s so typical and lazy that you’ve made this challenge. I listen to music ALL DAY on my headphones. That doesn’t mean I expect the rest of the country to march to the beat of my drum. It’s emotional intelligence.

I believe it's Switzerland. Between their noise laws and the chocolate, sounds ideal 😁

It’s your opinion that you shouldn’t be able to hear other people. That doesn’t make it reasonable or correct

Most of us, considerate people, do not inflict unnecessary noise on others.
Maybe it's just the way were brought up
