AIBU to dislike hearing neighbours' music in my garden?

Sitting in my garden and you can guarantee someone will start playing music, we surround a school field so its a lot of back gardens concentrated in one place. I can't complain that it's rave or too loud, its eclectic and not full blast but it disturbs the peace, I can hear the exact song and it reaches me at the volume I would have in my own garden as background noise.

I am not a big music lover, find it over stimulating maybe and jarring when the music doesnt match my mood.

I understand people want to enjoy their gardens on a nice day but if you want music that badly, wear earphones. I want to hear the outside - trees blowing, regular daytime noise and birds, not your music!

I don’t think you are being unreasonable however realistically, there’s not a lot you can do if it’s not being played ridiculously loud, or extremely late in the evening/early in the morning. I have the exact same issue, so I just invested in a decent set of earplugs.

frozendaisy · 14/08/2026 10:49

You need to pay a lot of money now to buy a property either a bit of land to get the peace you are describing nowadays.

Many have noises, smoke, smells they don’t want in their gardens.

Not wanting something isn’t enough.

GrantMyWishes · 14/08/2026 10:51

Sadly you're not being unreasonable to want complete peace and quiet in your garden, I'd love it too, but it's not going to happen, unless you're rich enough to be able to afford to buy a mansion in it's own acreage, and live alone in it.

noramoo · 14/08/2026 10:51

I am with you OP, it disturbs me so much, I know I am overreacting but for some reason it just drives me mad!

YouSawBrigadoon · 14/08/2026 10:52

People are thoughtless and rude. I’d hate it too.

trappedbynerves · 14/08/2026 10:54

Yeah, it's extremely antisocial. I love listening to music but if I want to hear music while working in the garden, I put my earbuds in. I'd never be so selfish as to inflict what I want to listen to onto others. If I can hear my neighbour's music, which as you say, is at least as loud if not louder than I'd listen to music at, I can't read or hear birdsong or enjoy peace.

Phewmcgrew · 14/08/2026 10:54

I agree OP. It’s really selfish of people to do this.

JellySky · 14/08/2026 10:55

Oh I know I am being a bit miserly, but it seems every nice day I go in my garden they do it, maybe doing some renovations. Once every now and then would be fine but it must be every day for it to be every day I go out. I wish I had land, because we have the field I like to think of being more remote than we are.

And I should be grateful its not early, late or rave, but its currwbtly Motown I cannot stand motown. At least they are happy and having a nice time, I will give my head a wobble and play some music for me. But because id rather hear mine than theirs, not because I want music!

Actually thought I would be crucified for this! Good to know it's not just me! I think its because its so jarring when its not your own taste or mood you are "your love lifting me higher" reminds me of nights in a social club with a mediocre singer, when right now I want to imagine being in a villa somewhere.

Oh it's deffo not just you OP! Selfish twats are everywhere these days sadly.

DozyCrow · 14/08/2026 11:06

I used to love sitting in my garden listening to the birds. There's a little traffic in the background, but nothing too loud. I don't mind occasional DIY or lawnmowers because they're intermittent. I don't mind hearing kids playing and laughing (as long as it's not that top volume screeching). Then new neighbours moved in two doors down who are retired, so around a lot. They have their radio going all day, every day from the beginning of spring to late autumn. It's not loud enough for me to make out the song properly. All I get is the base and the chord, then in between songs there's muffled talking. I find it irritating but don't want to be outside with noise cancelling headphones or ear plugs as there are so many other nice sounds.

NC9000 · 14/08/2026 11:08

Nope. It's rude to make everyone hear your music. I hate music, in general, and especially rap. I don't want to hear it and I don't impose my music on others. It's decent courtesy.

RemindMeIn15Minutes · 14/08/2026 11:11

I play the radio or some music in my garden and when I walk about 15 feet away from the radio, I can’t really hear it anymore. Acceptable.

Some twat up the road playing their music so loud the whole street can hear it. Unacceptable.

But I find the country is increasingly populated with people who have no manners and no concern for anyone else.

ForPinkDuck · 14/08/2026 11:16

Constant bonfires round here despite the coincil providing rubbish removal. If iim very lucky the christians several doors down will invite their church round and praise jesus by singing to him on plesent saturday evenings.

I hate it but it seems to be everywhere these days - every shop and cafe has music blaring and then you get home and you hear it in your own garden. Same with phones on loudspeaker - on public transport, in restaurants and my neighbour likes to do that in his garden too - I cant imagine wanting everyone else to hear my conversation or not thinking that they may not want to! There's literally nowhere you can just have some peace because people are so bloody selfish.

sparrownetsuke · 14/08/2026 11:22

We had a neighbour who played Islands in the Stream on permanent loop for hours every single fucking day. God I hated him so much.

CynicalSunni · 14/08/2026 11:44

How loud are people playing their music?

I know my neighbours play music as I might here it intermittedly. But not loud enough that I can hear the lyrics but might recognise a song.

Though last night one of my neighbours seemed to be playing the same 10 secs of song on a loop. I dont known what they were playing at. It was 11pm so quite quiet

Backedoffhackedoff · 14/08/2026 11:48

I really think you should step back and acknowledge this is a you problem and start thinking about/ practising coping strategies. There is a reason loud music is generally banned after 11pm only- so you can sleep. The rest of the time it’s not actually anti social in the true sense of the word

there are so many people now who just can’t cope with the existence of other people and whilst that’s fine, other people are a reality of life and you can control your reaction to it

Ereerenownow · 14/08/2026 12:25

Not quite the same but the woman who lives behind us is constantly outside on the phone on speakerphone. She is horrendously loud and I had no idea that speakerphone could be so bloody loud either. I could hear everything the person on the end of the call was saying but it was tinny and so annoying. I had enough after 20mins so had to go inside yesterday but also had to close doors and windows to block her out. This goes on 6 or 7 times a day for at least 15mins each time ...im always on edge. She's a social housing tenant and was going to complain about her but not sure if this issue is taken seriously

It's not about not being able to cope with other people, more that many people have absolutely no consideration for anyone else. It's been going that way for years but Covid really made it worse - everyone out for themselves and what they want trumps everything.

If your music or phone call can be easily heard by other people it's too loud. Obviously now and then most people wouldn't have an issue but OP and others have noted that it's much more than that.

It’s your opinion that you shouldn’t be able to hear other people. That doesn’t make it reasonable or correct

SmashThePatriarchy · 14/08/2026 13:32

I find it pig ignorant to be honest. Unless you’re having a party why do you need to blast music out to sit in your garden? Put some headphones on. Can’t stand it. I know people can do what they want in their gardens but it feels like lots of people are so selfish.

Morethanadecade · 14/08/2026 13:32

No one should be playing music outside in their gardens. The very occasional party is OK. There’s just no need for such antisocial behaviour. No one does it where I live - tiny gardens and terraced housing.

Backwardsbinn · 14/08/2026 13:36

A live in a nice posh area where it’s considered incredibly rude to inflict your music taste on others, so our gardens are all nice and quite apart from birds singing. It’s lovely. No one ever has bonfires either. Bbqs are a rarity too. It depends on the ethical standards of your neighbours OP.
