Not really, but it is what it is.
Not for lack of trying. I managed to fail an Access course Blush

Well do you know what girl - have a glass of wine on me, and cheers to being alive! Even if you didnt get the grades, youre still here and thats enough

If it helps, despite my a levels, I am laying tits out in front of the fan whilst my child judges me

Life comes for us all 😩❤️

Well, thanks.
Was there any need for that at all?

Reported it as a personal attack on you, @XenoBitch . Definitely not in the spirit of the site - robust debate is fine, but not personal nastiness.

My threads are always friendly and cheeky, this is a safe space!

The comment from the other poster has really upset me. I dropped struggled with sixth form because that was when I became really unwell with mental health issues. I was kicked out because they did not know what to do with me.
I have tried several times to get an education. I have been to uni twice, and had an offer for another time (but I failed the Access course). I have spent silly money on adult education courses and OU... I can't do it.

I did not realise that you need to have A-levels or be uni educated to post on here.

bpch · 13/08/2026 21:10

@PapyrophileHoly shit that was unnecessary. Intelligence and class clearly don’t correlate.

Thank you. I was going to report it too but was actually worried it would just be called a strong opinion or some crap. I am actually shaking, it really upset me.

Anyway, my sister fluffed her A-levels too, but managed to finish them. She is doing alright for herself. My brother got good grades and finished uni, but MH got him too so he works for DM when he can.

Rowgtfc72 · 13/08/2026 21:12

DEE English lit, history, German.
Went to uni to do a B.Ed, switched to English lit and education studies. Got a 2:2.
Graduated a bloody long time ago in 1994.

You don’t need any qualifications to post here. MNHQ have deleted that bitchiness following my report. Some people love to kick down. It makes me wonder what is so wrong in their lives that doing crap like this makes them feel better. You crack on, @XenoBitch .

Papyrophile · 13/08/2026 21:14

XenoBitch is quite the MN activist. I presumed she/he is up to robust debate. I profoundly apologise for my unkindness, and wish her every success with getting the qualifications she feels necessary.

You dont, honestly, mumsnet is just very anti anyone who appears working class (which is what I think that poster was getting at)

Studying isnt for everyone. Some of the brightest most successful people couldnt do studying, but could do other things!

I've had weird comments like that, it does sting, no need for it on a safe space thread

Around 70 apparently and acting like that, clearly very miserable with her own life to take completely uncalled for digs like that. Please don’t give it another thought, she should be ashamed of herself.

AAAA in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths ( you couldn't get A* at A-Level at that time).

Went to Oxford to study Physics and was home by March.

Ohh what happened .. just not your thing.. hope it turned out well in the end

I am 70, and I am interested in the same topics as XenoBitch so I see her username regularly. I am not miserable with my own life, but I rarely read her comments without thinking, this is a person who believes there is a magic money tree in the garden of 10 Downing St. No personal slur or offence intended.

You think there is no slur or offence by calling someone out as “not being an intellectual” when they were clearly showing some vulnerability and disappointment about exam results? Are you really so lacking in emotional intelligence to not recognise how unreasonably harsh that is even if you two have some kind of history of going toe to toe on political threads? Your opinion is not worth more than hers no matter what qualifications you have.

Yes, very working class background. My parents looked down on office work as they said it was not "real work". Generations of leaving school and going down the mines sort of mindset.

I did ok at GCSEs (a few B, and Cs). I did Math as an adult and got an A. It was different to school though (which was 90s for me). GCSEs were 2 years with coursework and exams. The maths I did as an adult was 1 year, and 3 exams.
I don't know how things are with A-levels compared to the 90s and now.

I am on benefits. MN (and that poster) hate that.

Papyrophile · 13/08/2026 21:28

My family is a generation and night school away from working class. My GF and DF were both extremely clever, but my GF started his working life with a broom at 14.

Then your snobbery is deplorable. Please don’t try to talk your way out of your meanness. A sincere apology and desire to do better would be more appropriate.

Papyrophile · 13/08/2026 21:33

No snobbery. And I have already apologised sincerely for being unkind. An apology which was refused.

Benefits are necessary to help people find an even keel to start again. I'm happy to pay my taxes to assist in that. I just don't see it as an open-ended ticket.

YouSawBrigadoon · 13/08/2026 21:45

AAA. English, history and biology. I can’t remember what I needed for my place at Exeter to read English. But I don’t remember being remotely worried that I’d not get all As. There was no A* back then. The arrogance of youth!

I have never said it should be. And fuck all to do with this thread.
And that is nothing to do with you saying I post mostly rubbish (you mean stuff you don't agree with), not an intellectual (I am not, so what?), or even capable of logical thinking (I am, bit not in your way I guess).

Firefly1987 · 13/08/2026 21:46

I got D-English, D-psychology and Film-B (AS level only then I dropped it)

Was pretty gutted about the English considering I got A* and B for English Lit+Lang GCSE which is why I took it but I found it SO boring. I should've done History and Sociology instead.

I always got top SATS despite being predicted average grades, then slightly worse at GCSE then fell off a cliff for A-level. I had depression and I don't think I cared by that point.
