Gift ideas for a 14-year-old boy housebound after a serious injury

What can I buy as a nice gift for a 14 year old boy who is now housebound and immobile for the rest of the summer due to a severe injury?
He's a good friend of my DS, and I feel so sorry for him. DS and him are frequently out and about biking and climbing trees together; he's now confined to his sofa till October.
Would like to get a nice gift to give to DS to to give to him, but have no clue what to get.
Does anyone have ideas?
I know this isn't AIBU but this gets the most traffic.

How much do you want to spend?
What hobbies and interests does he have?

KarcherK5 · 13/08/2026 15:12

Tbh at that age I’d give him a voucher for Amazon, or if he plays video games get him credits for those.

PopcornKitten · 13/08/2026 16:37

Sweets, voucher - Amazon/gaming , magazine, trading cards, shaped pillow, books.

my son was gifted all of these by friends in a similar situation.

HollyGolightly4 · 13/08/2026 16:38

Does he play a game- Minecraft
/ roblox or fortnite? I'd say credit for that!

Lovely idea though.

Lego

Seagullsandsausagerolls · 13/08/2026 17:52

Amazon and Google Playstore vouchers go down well for my boy when he's in and out of hospital.

nocoolnamesleft · 13/08/2026 17:54

An advanced meccano kit? Or lego?

Twoshoesnewshoes · 13/08/2026 17:59

A rubix cube

Pinkflamingo10 · 13/08/2026 18:20

lego - eg Lego Star Wars or Harry Potter etc there is Lego for all interests. He could build it on a tray while sitting on the couch.

Fridaygin · 13/08/2026 18:28

Whatever console he has- a voucher for that. Or Amazon/ cex to buy games

Millytante · 13/08/2026 20:22

A vintage Clash T shirt of course, and maybe a book token (assuming modern book tokens cover audio books too).

Or an actual book, if DS can give you a good steer re interests (if he lad’s a linguist for example, a book about all the delightful and gobsmacking words in Irish for animals and plants and so on. Great even for non-linguists; those with enquiring minds)
A really good world atlas, but published in the 1960s. Or an atlas of the antique world? If this kind of thing is his thing.

Wingingit73 · 13/08/2026 20:24

Console credits or v bucks. Your son will know

MiddleAgedDread · 13/08/2026 20:25

I tend to give the teenage boys money or vouchers but they often buy Lego with it, but the harder sets might be more than you want to spend (unless there’s several friends who’d all chip in?). I also know one who likes a good jigsaw!

Todolisttoolong · 13/08/2026 20:27

companionship. I am sure he would appreciate your DS staying in on some sunny days to play computer games with him more than any other gift.

A friend's son is laid up after an operation and we got him an Uber eats voucher to choose some things he likes once he feels like eating more.

shineyshoess · 13/08/2026 20:38

This happened to my son recently and the thing that made the most difference was having friends come and visit. A lot of the boys were a bit useless at visiting but a few were brilliant and came regularly and made him feel less alone.

I think a Lego kit would be a good option.

My son loved a little box full of "in joke" items and photos that a couple of his friends.who are girls made

AtIusvue · 13/08/2026 20:38

A smore kit that you can do indoors. You toast the marshmallows and get chocolate/
crackers. Your DS can go round and they can do it together. Little of the outdoors …indoors.

This looks fun!

Offherrockingchair · 13/08/2026 20:41

A big Lego set and a tray table. Get your DS to go round and work on it with him.

Bluespottedfrog · 13/08/2026 20:45

Company as other have said.

Waht a out a rubix cube or one of those 'bop it' games that he can work on improving his score?

Paddyshanks · 13/08/2026 20:53

What has he actually done? Is it an injury or an operation?

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 13/08/2026 20:56

Lego!

Farfromhome9 · 13/08/2026 21:01
