AIBU to avoid close socialising with my friend's mate after his behaviour?

AIBU to think my friend needs to stop telling me how I should feel about this man?

The background to this happened years ago, but it is still causing arguments now.
I don't like my friend Claire's close friend Mark.

I had known Mark socially for nearly 20 years (this is now 30). We'd slept together a couple of times when we were about 20, but it was purely casual. We both went on to have serious relationships with other people and would still chat whenever we happened to meet on nights out.

In my 30s I moved to another part of the country which Mark passed through every so often. He started messaging when he was going to be nearby and we'd meet alone for coffee, go for a walk, get something to eat etc.
Nothing romantic was happening but this went on for a few years and I got to know him much better. I really looked forward to seeing him. We both had other romantic lives going on during this period.

Eventually we were both single.

One day he contacted me and asked me to set aside some time because he wanted to talk to me properly.

He took me for dinner and launched into this huge romantic declaration. He brought up things I'd said and done over the previous few years, said he had five things he looked for in a woman and I'd smashed all five and more, that he'd realised he'd fallen hard for me, that he'd spent ages thinking about the risks and implications and had finally decided, after talking to a mutual friend, that he had to tell me because his feelings weren't going anywhere.
It was extremely intense and romantic, utterly unexpected.

We talked for hours, got completely caught up in it and ended up in bed. Under normal circumstances that would have been far too fast for me but we'd known each other for years and had this existing friendship and yes a short sexual history, so it felt right.

Then the next day was very weird.
He stayed for a few hours, then left awkwardly. No kiss goodbye. I heard absolutely nothing from him, messaged him once then left it.

I thought, brilliant. What a tosser. I certainly read him wrong. We're pushing 40 here, I'm really not interested in someone making a massive declaration of fake feelings and then disappearing without a conversation.

My friend Claire was abroad while this happened. I didn't tell her about it.

When she came back, she said to me one evening, completely out of the blue, "Oh! I saw Mark yesterday. You didn't tell me you'd had a sneaky shag with him. He was worried because he hadn't called you afterwards and said he'd realised he wasn't in a place for a relationship, but I told him not to worry because you'd be cool about it."

She said it in a very jokey "haha, you've been up to mischief" way.

I said actually, no, I wasn't particularly cool about it and I wished she hadn't spoken for me. I also hadn't told her because I regarded it as private and between Mark and me.
I said I thought he'd behaved like a dickhead.

She became really argumentative. Mark was apparently a great guy, I was being uptight, it had only been casual sex and I was making a drama out of it because I was "obsessed with finding a husband".
I told her to leave it because I was getting upset and didn't want to discuss my sex life with her.

I also really resented the fact that Mark had discussed it with her rather than just speaking to me himself.

Anyway, Mark and Claire have since become very close friends.
And this is where the current problem is.
At least a couple of times a year Claire invites me to do something with the two of them. I always decline.

I don't make scenes if Mark is at a bigger social event. I've seen him plenty of times over the years. I'm friendly, say hello, make brief small talk and then move on and speak to somebody else.

I simply don't want to spend a rare night out sitting having drinks with him.

Every single time this comes up Claire gets offended. She'll say I'm insulting her friend. I'll say, "I'm not asking you not to be friends with him. I don't like him because of how he treated me."
She then demands to know exactly what happened between us and why I still dislike him.
I've never given her the full blow-by-blow account above because frankly I don't think I should have to submit evidence for why I don't want to socialise with someone.
Over the years she has also made pointed comments like "not every casual hookup is a potential husband" and "sometimes a ride is just a ride".
Which irritates me enormously because, whatever anyone thinks of Mark's behaviour, he very specifically did NOT present that night to me as a casual hookup.

So the present day problem -
Last weekend Claire and I had lunch in the city. Afterwards she suggested going for a drink. I said I'd come for a very quick sodt one because I had to drive home.
Then it transpired as we were walking to the bar she was going to meet Mark.
I said no thanks, I'd head home.
She completely lost her temper with me.
We ended up parting on really bad terms and I was wiping away tears walking back to my car.
Mark and I are both married to other people now, by the way. There is absolutely no lingering romance or hope of reconciliation here.
I just don't like him.
I think he behaved badly towards me, never addressed it with me himself, and I'm perfectly happy being civil when our paths cross while not actively choosing to socialise with him.
AIBU to maintain that boundary without giving Claire the entire intimate history to justify it? We haven't even exchanged texts since last weekend.

You are completely correct. I think Mark’s behaviour was shitty but you handled it well. I would be firm with Claire and tell her to stop asking as your view is unchanged. But honestly I would likely start distancing myself from her too for her refusal to respect your boundary. She just sounds like she needs to grow up.

I do think it’s unnecessarily stubborn of you to refuse to disclose what happened. But I also think how you deal with it is your own affair and you have every right to protect your private life. Especially as you choosing not to associate with him is no detriment to her.

If a friend of mine hadn’t told me about this, and subsequently didn’t want to meet up with the bloke or discuss what happened I think I’d be worried that something concerning had happened between them (like an assault). I definitely wouldn’t be laughing it off or trying to get them to socialise together.

Really odd behaviour from your friend

IronEverything · 13/08/2026 19:22

Honestly, Claire seems like a bit of a bitch. Put her in Mark's category where she belongs.

ChalkOutlines · 13/08/2026 19:23

Honest opinion? I don’t think Claire likes you much. That’s why she dares to speak on your behalf , feels entitled to details about your sex life, has double standards when it comes to boundaries, keeps insisting you’re around a bloke that “brought you down a peg or two” and upset you and so on. You’re just a prop/entertainment, not someone who she sees as a friend, or even a fellow human with their own feelings, wants and boundaries.

CreativeGreen · 13/08/2026 19:42

I think you probably don’t need Claire in your life any more. You don’t like teenage friend group drama- she seems to love it. If I’m wrong and you do still like her enough to stay friends, I’d tell her what really happened: it’s not fair to you that he’s spun this and you haven’t been able to give your side. But honestly I think all the signs are to ditch Claire

"Claire actively dislikes a friend of mine. She had a relationship with him as a teenage, hung out socially in our twenties a lot, less frequently in our thirties and now draws a hard line that she can't stand him and won't even do group meetups if he is there. I don't get into it with her, she's entitled to her opinion."

There you are, Claire is a massive hypocrite!

I honestly think you'd really not be missing anything without her friendship, OP.

Exact, I mean how on earth dare she get cross with you for the exact same thing?! Bonkers. Have you reminded her about this and that you’d never force her to meet up with this guy?

Vaxtable · 13/08/2026 20:30

I would be dumping Claire shes no friend

Laura95167 · 14/08/2026 18:26

So i think Mark is a pig.

I don't think you have to explain yourself.

But I do understand the Claire knows youve had a past casual encounter, and didnt know this happened to you. And I bet she has Mark's version of events which will NOT paint him as the pig he is.

I think youre being reasonable but I think you need to choose to either let this friendship go or tell her once what happened. I say this because I agree you shouldnt have to, but you have just told all of us. Id explain once he manipulated you into sex then acted like you werent even friends and you dont want to see him again and now youve explained that if she tries this again youll end this friendship too

Thepeopleversuswork · 14/08/2026 18:53

She sounds like one of these people who always has to have the upper hand and be the decision maker in relationships. She sees you as the junior partner in the status hierarchy.

She got some sort of kick out of knowing you slept with him and used it to embarrass you (possibly she also hS feelings for him or maybe she wanted him to prefer her to you.) She wanted you to fall in line and play the part of the spurned person while she became his chosen confidante (and possibly lover? Who knows).

You haven’t been willing to play that game and have made it clear you don’t want to be part of that dynamic. She dislikes the loss of control and is trying to put you back in your box.

She sounds like someone who only wants a relationship on her terms and will not compromise. I don’t see what you would achieve by telling her the whole story about him: it would likely be twisted to imply you are bitter about him. Its also none of her business.

She sounds immature and unkind and I would cut her loose.

GrantMyWishes · 14/08/2026 19:11

Sounds to me like Claire has never grown up OP! I'd just drop her and move on if I were you.

I would be rethinking my friendship with Claire. She sounds like a dick.

This!

thistimelastweek · 14/08/2026 19:29

I don't like the sound of either of them

Rhaidimiddim · 14/08/2026 19:32

Tell Claire what happened. Otherwise she only has his " quick shag" side of the story to work with.

Alternatively, ditch her - with or without telling her your side - because she crossed a boundary there in trying to fool you into a meet-up wkith Mark you hadn't agreed to.

But don't expect anything to change unkess you speak to her (and she may not believe you anyway)

Honeymare · 15/08/2026 12:51

I'm coming back here to say thanks to everyone who replied. I know it seems like a lot of drama for something that happened many years ago. The reason I'm asking now is because Claire and i got into a row about it last weekend.

I've been thinking about it since and sorry if this feels like a dripfeed. It really was so long time ago that I forgot some of the following details which further cemented that I didn't like him or like being around him. I actually don't like thinking about it all and certainly don't want to talk about it, I'm married now and some idiot I slept with years ago is the last thing I want to putting my energy into. Regardless it's reared it's head now again so here are some missing bits -

One day myself,.Claire and another guy went to a workshop in the city. Afterwards we went for food and were discussing the workshop. It was a lovely day, I was really enjoying myself. By utter coincidence, Mark walked into the place and Claire surprised and delighted called him over. He was with another good friend of theirs called Lydia. Lydia, Mark and Claire have known each other since early teens. Mark and Lydia hovered around the table looking awkward, not sitting down and making weird eye contact at each other while they spoke across myself and the other guy to Claire. This was a few months after I'd slept with him. Lydia had wet hair, it did look like they'd spent the night together. They had and I couldn't have cared less but how can you say that. They did sit down, kind of non committally. Eventually I said "do you know what, I'm going to head off home, great to see everyone" and left.

Apparently Lydia didn't want a relationship with him after 'a shag' and he wouldn't leave her alone. I heard this from Claire and said isn't that between them, they might not want people knowing. Claire then answered Lydia felt really awkward around me that day because she knew the history.

Afaik it was not Mark who called it 'a sneaky shag' because he was expressing regret. It was Claire jumping to reassure him and telling me she had as if she had final word. I still think he was an immature weirdo for how he handled it.

Claire can be very territorial about people generally "I know them better than you". She certainly does know Mark better and longer but in a different way to me. She was going on one day about how amazing he is (actual words) and I said 'not my opinion' and she got very aggressive saying "so you shagged him, doesn't mean you know him". I said "generally people actually speak to and get to know someone before sleeping with him". I argued at that point I'd spent quite a lot of time with the man over the years alone and wouldn't have gotten into bed with him if I didn't like and trust him. I also said he told me a load of borseshit about having feelings for me. She kept saying really sarcastically "for one shag?'

Anyway there were other similar incidents both with her and him and the whole thing gives me the ick. I hate feeling judgemental but I find Claire's involvement in other people's private business so pathetic and childish. I know far too many details about people I barely know. I have no interest. I feel sorry for her being so caught up in other people's lives instead of living her own.

So I think at this point Mark is massively irrelevant. It's really about her encroaching on my boundaries.

We were on our way for a very quick drink and nearly at the door when she mentioned she was meeting him. Then she grimaced and said "jesus get over it" when I said no thanks I'll leave it. I wasn't pushed about going for a drink anyway, the parking meter was running on my car and I needed to get home.

I'm not going to reach out to clear the air. Maybe I will feel differently in a while but for now I want some space.
