Our library has its own cafe. When it's very hot they don't have any hot food available to eat. There's a sign saying no hot food today due to the weather, too hot for staff to be dealing with hot food. Words to that affect.
Sandwiches, and cake available.

Are they being unreasonable. Do other places do this?

Not everywhere has air con and rarely in the kitchens

Its just a question, not sure why people are answerng on this thread in such an uppity manner. Is it the heat?

Exactly......

Not worried about losing money then?

I suppose it's better than having staff faint and injure themselves. A visit from HSE isn't really good for business.

They are being sensible and caring for their staff! I know someone who works on a kitchen and last heatwave he said it was over 50 degrees in there!!! No one wants to work in that heat!

Edited

Whatvfo they do in other parts of the world where it's hot alot if the time?

This sounds very sensible. You’re not going to die because you have a sandwich instead of hot food. It’s too hot for the workers in the kitchen.

Well if the temperature goes above what they're used to, probably the same.

Oh. Im not hot. Im shivering. I get wet and stand in front of a fan and now Im sitting in front of the fan waiting until the last minute when Im going to put something on. My hands are freezing.

Maybe you’re angsty because you’re cold then!

Other parts of the world have a much different culture. For a start they don’t go out to eat at a cafe during the hottest parts of the day. They have air con. They have white buildings and shutters that deflect heat. They revolve their days around avoiding the hottest parts of the day and they’re not entitled like you. It’s a sandwich love, get on with it.

They have completely different buildings, ventilation, practices, food offerings.

Climate adaptation in Europe will be very tricky, unfortunately.

Hotter countries are generally set up better and used to the hot weather! I’m sure in a few years we will be better acclimatised to it but in the mean time we need to make accommodations!

Well no I think we've established you're not uppity and Im not uppity

Im getting dressed now and going out for cocktails. Hopefully the bars can operate or I'll kick off and smash some plates around or something like that.

Uppity

Viperregency · 13/08/2026 18:55

You come across a little beligerant op, which is a little odd if you didn’t want hot food.

IStillHearTheWaves · 13/08/2026 18:57

Bloody hell, of course they're not unreasonable. They wouldn't be unreasonable for thinking the majority of people don't want hot food in this weather, either!

Of course they are but they also care about their staff.

Nurses have been fainting due to the heat and that is without cookers and ovens going.

Also, most people don't want hot food when it is 35 degrees.

Buildings are set up differently, with reflective finishes, ventilation, tile everywhere. People take siesta when we take lunch, they eat their main meals late in the evening, their shops open early and people stay indoors out of the sun in the middle of the day.

Moonnstarz · 13/08/2026 19:13

Yeah several places near me are doing similar, and some are even closing early.
I am sure the number of people visiting probably declines too when hot (less people go out for lunch as it's too hot for it).
Not a cafe but a small independent gift shop near me posts videos daily and today has said it was a quiet day and the town was empty.

You’re comparing apples with pears I’m afraid. People in hot countries are accustomed to heat in ways we are not. They have their own coping mechanisms which we don’t. They will also build kitchens purposefully for the conditions they’re in, in places that are actually designed to be kitchens. A cafe that sells mostly coffee and cake with a side of hot food is very different to a place that sells mostly hot food with a side of coffee and cake (that’s also in reference to your takeaway comment).

It’s quite clear you have very little business acumen. People that visit the library don’t come to dine out. They will not be inconvenienced by the lack of hot food on offer, the destination for most customers is the library - the cafe is a nice bonus. Those customers will happily swap for cold food if they’re genuinely hungry. The proportion of people that will just ‘leave it’ as opposed to substitute will be small and so the cafe is not losing a lot of income as part of that decision. HTH

gamerchick · 13/08/2026 21:06

Would you want to work in a kitchen in this heat, because I ruddy wouldn't?!

DaisyDukesAuntie · 13/08/2026 21:17

I work in hospitality industry. One of our kitchens was over 45 degrees this morning. We change the menu on the hottest days to turn off hot food. Customer demand for hot food naturally drops when it’s 35 degrees outside, and anyone who thinks it’s unreasonable should try working in a kitchen, in that kind of heat!

Costs an awful lot more to deal with a horrible workplace accident because someone has fainted and fallen into a deep fat fryer
