Our library has its own cafe. When it's very hot they don't have any hot food available to eat. There's a sign saying no hot food today due to the weather, too hot for staff to be dealing with hot food. Words to that affect.
Sandwiches, and cake available.

Are they being unreasonable. Do other places do this?

They are being sensible and caring for their staff! I know someone who works on a kitchen and last heatwave he said it was over 50 degrees in there!!! No one wants to work in that heat!

WhatNoRaisins · 13/08/2026 11:43

It sounds very sensible and I'm all for caring about the well-being of your staff.

I'll be honest I can remember occasions on a cold day where I've been out and about and annoyed that I couldn't buy hot food anywhere but never on a hot day.

dottiedodah · 13/08/2026 11:46

They are offering sandwiches and cold food though. Its baking hot and they dont want their staff collapsing in the heat !Have a sandwich and a cold drink FFS!

Their definitely not being unreasonable. Their a library not a restaraunt. Most people who visit go because of the books, computers ect, not hot food

Exactly, especially as the food is often very basic, toasties, soup etc and libraries with cafes tend to be those in town and city centres so are surrounded by loads of cafes, bars etc that serve much more interesting food.

As for 'who wants hot food anyway' I find the MN aversion to hot food very strange. I've just come back from Spain and the majority of the lunch options were hot and just about all the plates brought out were hot food.

hahabahbag · 13/08/2026 15:36

Yes local independent cinema is saying the same yet the restaurant next door offers full service

Different companies make different decisions 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yes I find it a bit odd too! I lived in southern Spain for 10 years and we ate lots of hot food.

hahabahbag · 13/08/2026 15:40

@DierdreDaphne

ive just served lunch at work, several soups ordered, I will be cooking curry for my tea, I prefer hot food for dinner and both curry and chilli comes from countries far hotter than here.

Do takeaways all close tonight? Just wondered.

OP posts:
WhatNoRaisins · 13/08/2026 16:01

I imagine it depends on the temperature of the kitchen.

How are posters to know if take aways near you are closed tonight 🤔

Some will, some won’t. I’m afraid we can’t tell you whether the ones near you will be open or closed.

JustAnotherWhinger · 13/08/2026 16:07

Several places round here don’t do hot food when it’s really hot. They find too much goes to waste as nobody really wants hot snacks or meals when it’s too hot so it’s not worth the staff roasting to cook stuff that will end up getting binned at the end of the day.

CoffeeCantata · 13/08/2026 16:09

My daughter works in a gastro pub and she says the hot evenings recently have brought people near to breaking point. She and other staff were actually close to fainting at times, and it becomes dangerous. Not saying a Library cafe is working at this volume..

I appreciate some outlets will have to continue to provide hot food (like my daughter's) but those which can get away without - I don't blame them.
I think it's amazing that Library has a cafe at all - wow! I'd be pleased with just beverages, sandwiches and cakes in the summer.

Tryagain26 · 13/08/2026 16:12

It's perfectly reasonable . They are still offering food. I assume the kitchen is small , and it would be very unpleasant and possibly unhealthy to cook in it in this heat.
I doubt they would lose any money because people prefer bold food when it's hot anyway.

Epoisses · 13/08/2026 16:14

You are being ridiculous. Stay at home and have a bowl.of soup

Overitallnow · 13/08/2026 16:15

Surely each establishment makes it's own choice depending on the conditions in the kitchen / dining room. Perhaps may people cancel reservations due to the heat.

Who said I wanted hot food?

Well if you don't it's a very strange topic to start a thread about!

Raindropskeepfallingon · 13/08/2026 16:21

Our library cafe is staffed by mostly volunteers, most of them either retired or with disabilities. They do it because it’s a sociable bit of volunteering and they just wouldn’t do it if it involved excessive heat. They are in fact completely closed today. So far as I can tell on local Facebook nobody has died because they had to go without a jacket potato or the usual Thursday chilli con carne special.

As for making money - it almost certainly doesn’t. It’s a charity, lots of these sorts of places are.

You’re just being contentious for the sake of it. Why should any of it bother you if you don’t want hot food, anyway?

chirrupybird · 13/08/2026 16:32

girlfriend44 · 13/08/2026 10:14

Not worried about losing money then?

Just have a sandwich, do you really need hot food on a hot day in a hot building? Most people would just go for the cold alternatives. And cooks are human too.

BalakayAARon · 13/08/2026 16:34

My student DS works in a McDonald's kitchen. Luckily it is a fairly new build and it has air-conditioning, so service is unaffected in our current 32° heat.

YABU. Good on the managers and owners making the safe decisions for their staff.

They probably should if the temperature doesn't drop significantly, no fun cooking in an already red hot building. I'm just starting cooking dinner and it's already roasting in my kitchen and I don't have a load of industrial fryers going.

Jaimelefromage · 13/08/2026 16:36

The question is, why is it bothering you so much OP?
