If you had to be dropped into any country with no money, which country and what would you do to get by?

First I thought Japan and busking (the Japanese love English music). Then I thought maybe South USA for some southern hospitality and maybe my British accent would get me some free drinks?

The UK. Go on benefits.

I bet you're fun at parties!

I'm a pretty fast knitter, so maybe I should be dropped somewhere cold and sell my creations. I could even carry a sign: will knit for food.

TaleOfTwoHalves · 12/08/2026 22:35

The UK of course. Something for nothing here.

Same ‘joke’, same ignorance.

Lovely work.

Spain. I have always liked the thought of moving there and just winging it. Seems like a nice country with an ex-pat community to help.

Lovely work.

It’s not a stupid suggestion though, is it.

Be dropped somewhere where you are already a resident and where you have at least some rights to state support.

The question is basically: where is the best place in the world for you to be destitute.

Obviously, more fun ways to take the question are available.

Assuming PP is already in the UK, these aren’t going to be relevant to her.

YABU.

Firstly because the chat board exists for this kind of thread, and secondly because you must have seen how it'd go.

Nowhere because I’ve been in the situation. I stole food and slept in toilet cubicles in hotels. It’s a grim experience but it lets you know what you’re made of and what you’re willing to do to survive.

Venusunbroken · 17/08/2026 16:43

I’m afraid I’d also pick the uk, I don’t understand how it’s stupid. I’d get benefits and housing.

mrsm43s · 17/08/2026 16:46

France, because I speak French and have a UK teaching degree and so could probably find a job or set myself up as a private English teacher. And the cheese and wine are good too!

Sauceandwhizz · 17/08/2026 16:48

France. I'd find work on a campsite that also offers free lodging and help with the English speaking visitors. I could live on baguette, fries and croissants forever!

Stickywillow · 17/08/2026 16:50

The UK
Hardly any police, most crime appears to have been decriminalised so there would be no punishment for stealing, or very little and even if you go to prison, they're pretty cushy compared to other countries so yes it would have to be the UK.
Japan would just kick you right out OP. They are very strict about who they let reside in their country.

LemonSnail · 17/08/2026 16:50

Turkey or another Muslim country.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 17/08/2026 16:50

New Zealand. We were offered a car to borrow twice when we were there by strangers. It's a high trust society, and quite a few hippy communities. Don't think it would take me long to get to one.

NovemberMorn · 17/08/2026 16:51

Paris, France. I have only been once, but I was offered a job on my first day there by a very smart older woman as I was sitting in a square waiting for my OH to get some drinks.
Later my OH said it was in Paris's red-light district.

Flintgranet · 17/08/2026 16:52

If this is like a temporary thing, in which I'm dropped there with no money but need help to contact/get home....

Ghana. I'd likely be adopted and eventually waddle out of my rescue a stone heavier. You want a place with hospitable people and good food.

Brawsome · 17/08/2026 16:59

Scottish. Boston. Easy.

Cantloseyou · 12/08/2026 22:21

If you’re refused because you can’t show you’re habitually resident, it's usually best to:

  • make a new claim each week - until they agree you’re habitually resident
  • challenge each decision that you’re not habitually resident
Keep doing this until they agree you’re habitually resident.
MiceSpiders · 17/08/2026 17:08

It would make sense for it to be somewhere with a strong British tourism industry, easy to pick up casual waitressing/bar/promo rep work , probably a Greek island just because I'd like to be there anyway. Alternatively probably Germany, I speak German, have some German qualifications and they are fairly open to immigration

MrsMoastyToasty · 17/08/2026 17:12

Wales. I live in England just the other side of the Bristol Channel. I've walked from Wales to England in the past using the old Severn Bridge.

LoisGriffinskitchen · 17/08/2026 17:12

For you “all migrants get benefits” lot.

It’snot that simple, I occasionally have to support migrants, most get nothing more than asylum payments.

A friend of mine living here from Nigeria has three children, his wife was British and he was working 50 hr weeks, no need for benefits. He is high and dry after the sudden death of his wife. Three children under 7 to support and no state help until he can get leave to remain which he has long ago applied for but it’s now urgent.

So don’t tell me “they get everything “ because you just show the level of your ignorance,

Not stupid at all. Once you’re in you’re in , and the tax payer pays for your upkeep
