If you had to be dropped into any country with no money, which country and what would you do to get by?

First I thought Japan and busking (the Japanese love English music). Then I thought maybe South USA for some southern hospitality and maybe my British accent would get me some free drinks?

France, because I speak French and have a UK teaching degree and so could probably find a job or set myself up as a private English teacher. And the cheese and wine are good too!

Avez-vous not entendu de la Brexitte, Madame?

Somehow, in a mythical world where I was dropped without any money into any country of my choice I didn't think we were considering legal practilities. But if we were, I guess I'd have 90 days to earn enough cash in hand to pay for my transit back home to my family, home and money. France would still be the best bet, as I speak the language, and the journey home would be cheap!

The USA. Preferably in the Wild West. I’d rustle cattle or volunteer as a ranch hand.

Carouseloflife · 17/08/2026 17:28

Gibraltar

Germany. I’d tell a few jokes and hopefully befriend some people who would be all about helping me get sorted!!

WeddingDressguest · 17/08/2026 20:24

Iceland. Offer to help out on a sheep farm.

MMAMPWGHAP · 17/08/2026 20:36

Germany. They’re always so surprised at a Brit making an effort and are really friendly. Would love to work on getting more Brits to go to Sylt & Rügen.

The UK. Go on benefits.

Would you be happy in a hotel with all the other asylum seekers?

PrettyLittleRose · 17/08/2026 20:40

Canada. many of them speak the same language as me (English) and if I get dropped in a French speaking part of the country, my French is good enough to get by. Also I feel I would be looked after. I don't know what I would do to get by, apart from casual work, maybe moose grooming, or collecting sap from maple trees.

Didn't take long for Brexit to be brought up did it? Wink

Bogstandardname · 17/08/2026 20:50

Has to be UK. Soon be on benefits.

powershowerforanhour · 17/08/2026 20:53

If it has to be a foreign country :
Across the border in Donegal, walk to the nearest road, get the thumb out and go home.

Dmsandfloatydress · 17/08/2026 20:55

Australia. Loads of work and lots of acquaintances I could tap up for a bed for fhe night. Then bugger off to go and work on a sheep station

Spain. I have always liked the thought of moving there and just winging it. Seems like a nice country with an ex-pat community to help.

You mean join an immigrant community…in another country…

Eat British food in British bars, buy from British shops, speak in your own language…use your GHIC for free treatment…

Not getting at you, but the irony of Brits abroad as against our view of immigrants here.

I thought the Franglais would tip you off about my not being serious.

This happened to my cat. Well, metaphorically.
He escaped his carrier in a place that wasn't his home.
He survived by becoming street and picking up a different caccent for a few weeks. He stole food and slept a lot. It changed him.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 17/08/2026 21:21

Erm, probably rural New Zealand, because I can milk cows and would earn money that way!

I'd prefer France, though. I've always wanted to learn fluent French. The only issue is that I'm intolerant to cheese, and I don't like wine... and if learning Welsh is anything to go by, I might not be good at picking up French, either!

Atleastitsnotsunstroke · 17/08/2026 21:23

Somewhere in Africa, v friendly people.

Flannelfeet · 17/08/2026 21:31

Poland.. i could live with family and happily eat fruit from the orchard they have. (Born and bred scottish with polish, German, Irish family. Spent my childhood summers in Poland and absolutely loved it there, sadly the last trip i had there at 20 I was very ill, rushed to hospital 2 days after i arrived home with a pulmonary embolism and told i couldn't fly again unless I took blood thinking injections 6 months before and 6 months after 🥹. They are bloody horrible so I haven't been back since 💔.

TheContinent · 17/08/2026 21:34

I have done it. Came just with a plane ticket my aupair family bought me, moved from aupair to aupair, met a man and moved in with him. It has been 20 years now

Slowlorissa · 17/08/2026 21:35

Probably Australia as we speak the same language and I could get a job! Sheep shearing!
