£610 a week pension demand is insane

Thisismyfinesthour · 12/08/2026 12:33

Just read that there is an online petition doing the rounds for a £610 a WEEK pension demand to the government.
WTAF? Is the heat melting some peoples brains? It seems over 5000 have signed it.
Where do they think the money is coming from?

Any idiot can start or sign a petition. There’s no point getting worked up about the ones that obviously won’t come to anything.

risingup · 12/08/2026 12:36

Where did you read that? Can you post a link?

arethereanyleftatall · 12/08/2026 12:37

Whilst I’m not saying they don’t exist, this is something I only know from the media as I do not currently know a single poor pensioner. They all seem to living the exact life they want as far as I can tell. And I know the whole range id say from my grandma on benefits through to my friend who lives in a 3 million house and goes on holiday whenever she fancies.

Petrocz · 12/08/2026 12:43

equal 48hrs a week at the National Living Wage.

Why?

CeeJay81 · 12/08/2026 12:47

I'd rather they increased people's wages instead. Pensioners are probably the wealthiest of all of us. It's working age people that are struggling.

I have never met a rich pensioner. I know loads on pension credit though…

UniquePinkSwan · 12/08/2026 13:00

These are usually started by people who have never worked a day in their life

hahabahbag · 12/08/2026 13:04

It didn’t get many signatures. Unrealistic!

HideousKinky · 12/08/2026 13:06

There's no way it will ever go back to age 60

None least of all me is getting worked up about it. 🙄I was merely saying about the stupidity of it.

Well more than a quarter of over 65s live in a household with assets valued in excess of £1m. So if you have more than a handful of pensioners, your are either a statistical anomaly or a chunk of your acquaintances are understating their wealth

ParsleySageToiletDuckAndBinBags · 12/08/2026 13:12

Why on earth 48 hours of living wage? Most working-age people who work full time don't work for 48 hours.

Nobody wants to see old people poor and struggling for money; but it's absurd to suggest that you should earn considerably more in retirement than you were when you were working, and also paying a mortgage, travel and other work-related costs and bringing up children.

The idea that the government should pay you more for not doing any work than your employer paid you when you were working full time for them!

Perhaps it’s area dependent. Most of the pensioners I know are very comfortable indeed. The younger ones go on a lot of holidays.

That would depend a lot on where the writer lives though. There will be many on pension credit not everyone had a private pension, savings or was able to buy their own home.

I find it interesting how these types do not even blush when they simultaneously harp on about “we paid in” , demand payouts far in excess of their contributions and huff about “it’s not a benefit”.
Pick a lane guys…

No. That is a fair point. But there is no other demographic where 27% are millionaires.

Yeah... Just about to retire and we will lose 60% of our income instantly, and no, neither of us earns London money

Not sure how we could be described as wealthy at any point of our lives

Most of us live in normal places, normal houses and have nothing like that

crowsfeet57 · 12/08/2026 13:18

It's just a ploy to make people hate pensioners more than they already do.

Friendlygingercat · 12/08/2026 13:20

Well I was from a working class background and I don't know a single pensioner (including myself) with property valued at a million. Two of the pensioners in my wider family don't tell neighbours they get pension credit because of the stigma attached to it. I just helped one of them with a successful DLA supercession to get a care element added to her mobility claim. That's where you tell the DLA that your needs have changed and asked them to re-assess your claim. I advised her not to mention it to neighbours and acquaintances because its not their business,

73% are not in millionaire households, indeed. But if 27% are, and I caveat that I haven't seen the breakdown, but the median wealth for over 65s is £502,000.

PollysKenwood · 12/08/2026 13:24

Mumsnet skews posh so it’s not surprising that the people who post on here mainly know wealthy pensioners and don’t know many poor ones.

You do realise that the average income for a single pensioner is £14,500? How are they wealthy?

Its not a case of being posh and knowing only rich people, I am quoting government statistics, not anecdotal perceptions.
