AIBU to cut SIL out finally …

AIBU to just quietly cut SIL out of my life? (Used AI to help me write this up as it’s a long story!)
Just to say upfront, I’ve used AI to help me write this because there’s years of history and when I try to explain it myself I end up rambling 😂 But the events/opinions are mine.
DH has 3 brothers and 1 sister. His sister has always been difficult/selfish/competitive according to DH – those are his words, not just mine. They had a very privileged upbringing – private schools, amazing holidays, etc – but there has always seemed to be this underlying competitiveness between the siblings.
SIL is very close to MIL. They see each other pretty much every day and SIL talks constantly about her children/their achievements etc. We live nearby too, although barely see SIL.
There have been years of little incidents, but one from years ago has always stuck with me because it happened when I was incredibly vulnerable.
I had just given birth emergency c-section after failed induction - and became very ill. I was in hospital with an infection, had been back into surgery, and my newborn was in NICU being supported with his breathing. I was also about 300 miles away from my own family.
We also had a 3yo DS.
Because of infection/vulnerable babies, the midwife asked DH if possible not to bring our 3yo onto the ward/NICU that day. I believe a couple of babies had fallen ill.
DH therefore asked MIL if she could have our older DS so he could come to the hospital and be with our baby (and me to some extent but I was quite bed ridden and very poorly).
It happened to be SIL’s birthday.
MIL apparently told DH that SIL had said she didn’t want our DS there because it was her birthday and she wanted it to be just her mum and her own DS, who was also 3 at the time.
So DH couldn’t leave our 3yo with MIL and therefore couldn’t come and be with me and our newborn.
That has honestly never left me.
Fast forward about six weeks. Baby and I were finally home after a long hospital stay. I was post-C-section, recovering from infection and still couldn’t drive because of the complications.
I asked MIL whether, just one morning a week for the next TWO weeks, she could take older DS to preschool because I was really struggling physically.
SIL was there and said something along the lines of, “Other people can do it, why can’t you?”
I said because I’m poorly and physically struggling!
I then said fine, DH would have to do it, although it would affect his work. MIL’s response was that she’d speak to DH.
And this isn’t really about those two incidents anymore. There have been years of similar behaviour and I think I’ve reached the point where I simply don’t want a relationship with SIL.
I don’t want a big confrontation. I don’t want DH to stop seeing his sister. I wouldn’t stop the children having relationships with family either. I’m happy to be polite if we’re at the same family event.
I just don’t want her in my life beyond that.
Basically treating her as DH’s sister rather than someone I personally have a relationship with.
Im very close to my brother’s wife and my mum treats her like another daughter. It’s all very different in my family. 🙏🏽
Part of me wonders whether I’m holding onto things that happened a very long time ago. But another part of me thinks that how someone treats you when you’re at your absolute lowest tells you quite a lot.
So AIBU to just keep stepping right back and stop bothering? Or do I need to let the old stuff go?

Readjust your expectations with your MIL (accept you will never come first and neither will your kids)

You see, it’s this kind of statement which puzzles me. Why wouldn’t a mother put her own daughter first? Why would a daughter in law expect to take precedence over a daughter with her mother-in-law?

I'm interested in the thinking here?

So if someone else was in dire need (like the op being really ill and her new baby being ill too ) and my daughter said I couldn’t help out because of a birthday, I’m afraid the ill person would come first.

What disgusting horrible advice, says alot about you.
There are far better ways to go about this without stopping to being foul mouthed.

Being foul-mouthed to a cruel bully can be very cathartic and satisfying.

This, it’s the dc who were being denied help from the grandparents too, but as they’re the sons dc, some on mn thing that means naught!

Basically, you just don’t like her. Why shouldn’t she “rule the roost”? You don’t really know what the whole of her life in her birth family has been like - you see only a bit of it.

I dislike it when in-laws presume to know about my relationships with my siblings and parents. They are encroaching.

instead of carping, why not just admit you don’t like her? That would be the honest thing to do.

I’ve been in the family for over 20 years… I know a lot… I’ve also had 20 years of experiencing this

and to the PP who said daughter’s take precedence this woman wanted just her child and her mum at her birthday … not her 3 year old nephew … while her newborn nephew was in NICU literally fighting for his life..she could not spend half a day with her brother’s child … wtaf??

in addition my mum treats my brother’s wife like a daughter … maybe we just do family differently? Maybe we just know there is enough love to go around and in a close family members time of need we don’t shit on them like this.

I get on with my SiL just fine.
She's lovely, non confrontational, an amazing aunt but I have zero to do with her outside of family gatherings.
Rarely text about anything other than present ideas for upcoming birthdays. Never call.
What are you stepping back from?
Just do a hi and goodbye at family get together. Small talk if you can be arsed

This post nails it for me

Are you the poster who’s posted about all this loads before, without the AI?

I don’t get the hate for AI? It’s a great tool for aiding good communication. When I’m in the mood I can be very concise with my writing, I would hate to be accused of using AI.

Just to reinforce that both SIL and MIL absolutely behaved appalling in your birth story. Family is supposed to step up in situations like that. You’re not overreacting to not see them as family if they can’t act like family and treat them as distant acquaintances - I feel bad for your DH as I’m not that close to my siblings but I’d be devastated if that was how they treated me in those circumstances.

Quitelikeit · 14/08/2026 07:19

This sounds awful.

A few things: don’t let these people use your emotional energy

They will never change - their actions are not necessarily related to you it’s about who they are and they would have done it to anyone

I I understand the dynamic and you should detach yourself- be polite and civil but remember you don’t have to go to events with these people

And you BiL asking you to pay for your own takeaway when he earns 750k?! Ugly behaviour

Your dh - well let him go and do as he pleases- his family and you don’t want to get in the way of that

hellisemptyandallthedevilsarehere · 14/08/2026 07:25

If you dont have friends in your area who you could ask to help with ds3, and DH’s family are that unhelpful, MOVE! Move to your family, anywhere, but get away from these selfish people.

Thanks for this everyone - I appreciate the comments.

I think cos MIL has now stepped up as time has gone on… and DH does the asking not me .. but you’re right it was both of them … the fact MIL went along with it BUT it’s also the power SIL yields in that family dynamic.

DH was pretty devastated at the time … especially when me and our youngest were in hospital it was a long a stint … especially as we were not expecting me to fall ill/have surgery etc. Birthdays are like the holy grail in that family ..

and you’re right … I think I have let go to some extent. But I often play the situation in reverse like as if my mum and I would have said to my brother no we can’t have your child … we know your wife is ill with your newborn in hospital but we have a bday to celebrate.

there have been other incidents over the years and in reality yes there isn’t a lot to step back from now as I have been firmer in my boundaries. It’s hard to live far from family … and I often bump into MIL and SIL.. they’re always together and I’ve got used to not being invited etc.

MIL is a matriarch and SIL rules her too. It’s the oddest dynamic.

MIL is not a matriarch. SIL, however, seems to have worked her way to be the matriarch.

@SoBoredOfSelfDoubtHowToGetOut@SunshineAndFizz@Gotbackthank you! Thought I was going a bit mad… I guess they’re also local so the preschool was 8 mins drive from me and about 15 from them… fully retired - two car household. Really competent … lead in lots of church stuff, charity stuff - very involved in the community, very easy for them to do that.

It’s interesting that she’s busy in the church and presumably has standing there. You now have a weapon, you know. “Who, MIL? Well, her helping those in need has a limit, doesn’t it?” “ well, of course, MIL is selective about her charity efforts. It’s very much on her terms. Have you not noticed?” “Ooh, no, I wouldn’t be asking MIL. I’ve found that there’s little point.”

You might never say anything but you will always have the knowledge that you could.

Morepositivemum · 15/08/2026 14:21

I think it sounds like you’ve stepped back already so job done really!

I think ils should find a way to be around each other when they have to only if they don’t get on, so if ye have to be around each other that there’s no grudges etc.

I also think the mn version is made out to be less complicated than it is- eg your sil might just have said to mil i really wanted just us for my birthday- different to I don’t want dn here but mil might have read it as that, and her saying other people can bring their kids to collect, maybe she’s looking out for your mil?

Nope MIL said to DH SIL has said she only wants her as in MIL, SiL and SIL child - I remember it clear as night and day. and if you asked my DH now he’d say the same.

Yes but you heard it from mil as opposed to her actually saying it? Third hand does mean it could have happened differently!!

Great post
Your sil sounds like a complete b*tch.
And as for your church going mil. What a hypocritical cow- she can’t help her son and dil in their hour of need with her wee grandson. 🤮

MyKindHiker · 17/08/2026 11:04

Not unreasonable at all. Like you say, don't make a big drama of it. Don't send a big letter or announce it to the family. No need. Just don't really speak with her. I have barely any relationship with my SIL. She's fine I don't really know her though. I would no more text her or call her than I would any other random acquaintance I hardly know. Sounds like the two of you have very different values and are different people.

Boundaries198 · 18/08/2026 22:36

Thank you … I have over time … don’t have a lot to do with her, having kids who are cousins a similar age but once again we have different values on the kids upbringings … we just focus on different things with our kids.

We all know that we don’t know what tomorrow brings , so I’m more than happy to be civil. That’s not too difficult.
