There’s been a summer bug going around the office and I can feel the beginnings of a cold. Pressure in my sinuses, a slightly stuffy nose, scratchy throat.

I go on the holiday of an absolute lifetime in a little over two weeks. I need to kill this bug now, please give me every single tip possible! Even your most unhinged, I cannot be unwell for this trip and I cannot travel poorly. Help!

You can't. You just need to wait for your body to fight it off.
Lots of rest, drink and eat enough, and wash your hands regularly.

I need to. There’s no other option.

I would think if you’re starting with it now you will be over the worst by the time you travel in 2 weeks! Make sure you drink plenty, get plenty of rest and eat well.

HobgoblinNorFoulFiend · 11/08/2026 11:17

I don’t think you can, either, but for what it’s worth get First Defence from pharmacy and Yogi Tea Throat Support Tea. Eat lots of veggies and get lots of sleep. Good luck.

Linetree · 11/08/2026 11:20

The Vicks First Defence works well IME

Hohumbrumbrum · 11/08/2026 11:22

Avoid small children.

Avoid small children.

Doing so, thankfully 😅

Vitamin C and D. You can get high dose spray D from a chemist. It's supposed to boost the immune system.

Mulledjuice · 11/08/2026 11:24

Vicks first defence spray
Also saline up your nose tonight
Gargle with dilute TCP (1 part to 5 parts water)
Stay hydrated, get plenty of sunlight + sleep
Turmeric, ginger + garlic + greens

candyfloss06 · 11/08/2026 11:25

Plenty of rest, water, no stress, vitamin D, salads, green vegetables! You will be fine! Enjoy your holiday.

whymewhynowwhy · 11/08/2026 11:30

I genuinely can’t believe it, we’ve had the best summer ever and somehow there’s still a cold going around!

Take echinacea every day, plus the above fab suggestions 👍🏼

Owninterpreter · 11/08/2026 11:33

If its starting now it will likely be done in two weeks. Sambucol with with blackelderberry might speed up your defence. Plus rest.

Ironfloor269 · 11/08/2026 11:36

Lemsip tablets every 6 hours or so. I swear by it, they help to stop a cold in its tracks.

In the long term, a daily drink of kefir. I used to get colds at least once in 6 months but since starting to drink/eat kefir once a day, I haven’t got a cold for about 2 years.

They tend to take me so long to get over! It’s such a pain in the bum

I have this bug and it's horrendous. Fluorescent mucus and constant coughing. I was on holiday so didn't have my usual preventive supplies. I'd use Vicks 1st Defence spray, Sambucol and Echinacea.

MorrisonsPlatter · 11/08/2026 11:51

As above warm salt water irrigation, get a bespoke thingy to get it up your nose.

Argh! It seems vile, I’m so annoyed that everyone has come into work poorly!

First defence. Also, if you are able to wfh, do that (benefits recovery and benefits others). Do a covid test too for a couple of quid - seems a fair bit around (rest as much as your body allows if covid).

outerspacepotato · 11/08/2026 12:02

Isotonic or hypertonic Saline spray or neb, wash hands frequently, eat lots of lions mane and shiitake mushrooms and garlic.

longhotsummer2026 · 11/08/2026 12:06

Take two paracetamols and two antihistamines morning and night for the next few days. It’s the same ingredients as in expensive well known cold and flu tablets, drink lots of fluids and rest/sleep as much as you can for the next few days. That always works for me.

princesspadam · 11/08/2026 12:33

The First Defence is amazing, even when you have the beginning of a cold it never ends up coming or is really mild

Parky04 · 11/08/2026 16:30

Vitamin D tablets. I haven't had a cold in 3 years!

noscotlandnoparty · 12/08/2026 18:40

2 oregano capsules every day - keep taking them. They will prevent and be a quicker cure if you do pick it up.

Silverfoxette · 12/08/2026 20:06

I find elderberry syrup great at the first sign of a cold, nips it in the bud right away
