Was the dog invited?

Follow up to last week's post re: uninvited dog arriving at ours over the weekend alongside brother in law and wife...

Dog arrived. My husband had already had the conversation with his brother that he should have asked if it could come. Brother in law agreed, but promised the dog would be no trouble.

And then... we are all woken up at 5 am on Sunday morning by it barking its little furry ass off loudly and continually inside the house, the yappy little bugger.

They've gone.

Did they leave at 5am Sunday morning with boot prints on their asses?

Asked if they could bring it.

But you did the inviting? They didnt ask to come if i remember correctly? Did they have to ask if each individual member of the family can come?

No. I am too kind for that.

Not the humans.

Just chill. It's one morning! I can't believe people get so antsy about a dog visiting. Dogs are the best and I thank my lucky stars that our family always saw our dog (RIP) as a member of our family and if we were invited then he was invited (according to them).

Yes, that’s you, but not everyone feels the same.

She invited them to stop on their way home from their UK holiday with their dog.... what were they supposed to do with him??

Make sure their host knew the dog was with them and if necessary agree another weekend if having a smelly mutt in the house didn't suit their hosts.

Same procedure for any occasion you're invited somewhere and have another person with you that the host doesn't know about.

Dogs aren't exempt from this courtesy to a host.

Wow! As a former dog owner it's really not that simple. A dog in a non-dogproofed house is a serious imposition.

Its not really, we had people with dogs over before we had one, yes sometimes an inconvenience but not really a big deal

Then don't invite people who are travelling home from their holiday with their dog! What were they supposed to do with him?

Kennels, friends, family... Or ASK.

The point is, they didn't ask if we were OK with it.

They were supposed to ask if it was ok to bring their dog, the op would've said no. They'd have visited another time sans dog. It isn't rocket science.

If they had asked, I would have said yes.

They didn't ask. That was what was so annoying.

Well, that and the 5 o'clock awakening.

I prefer a lab bark over a yappy bark any day.

AcquadiP · 10/08/2026 20:22

My take on this is slightly different to yours. It could be the case that this dog barks for attention and its owners willingly comply by leaping out of bed at silly o'clock. (If so, more fool them and they shouldn't be taking their dog to the homes of others.)

If not, there was a reason the dog was barking his head off. It could be that someone was up to no good outside your house or near your car. If so, he's done you a favour because no would-be burglar or car thief is going to hang around when the dog inside the house is noisily drawing attention to the fact they are there. In addition, they wouldn't want to run the risk of being bitten.

The car is insured. My sleep is not. Take the car.

Yeah, I fucking love waking up at 5am on a Sunday...😒

With 3 cats and a dog in my house that’s a lay in! My dog, if she sees a fox in the garden, the whole street knows about it!! (Not really as we’re well insulated lol! But you know what I mean ) 😂

Yes, I know exactly what you mean. I bet your neighbours know exactly what you mean, too, in this hot weather.

You were not BU for feeling aggrieved that your BiL was bringing his dog to your house to stay but didn’t ask.

YABU to have facilitated filling a 40 page thread about it and then start another one when the dog was going to stay anyway, did stay anyway, has now gone and BiL knows he should have asked.
YANBU to also be pissed off it woke you at 5am in a Sunday morning

Why?
