'what's for dinner?' like a little toddler would ask. How unattractive.

Jk987 · 10/08/2026 19:04

Do you do all the cooking then? What’s the betting you do the laundry, cleaning and admin too. Why? 🙄

blackrabbitwhiterabbit · 10/08/2026 19:05

Why does he even ask you what's for dinner anyway?

Why was lunch served so late? 3-3.30pm is neither lunch time, nor dinner time. I'd be pissed off about that for starters.

I wouldn't be happy with being expected to have just one meal to cover lunch and dinner, as I don't overeat and wouldn't/couldn't eat two meals worth of food in one go.

Whose job it is to make the dinner depends on the agreed fair distribution of labour generally. I mean, I'm pretty sure most people would knock themselves up an omelette or something, but honestly I'd expect the person whose turn it was to make the dinner to actually do that, if they have an agreed set of responsibilities each.

Make your own then! Life’s too
short to be so rigid on mealtimes 😂

Thepeopleversuswork · 10/08/2026 19:08

It happens sometimes. Not the end of the world. I am a believer in regular mealtimes but it isn't a hill to die on if it means having to eat twice in the space of two hours.

Well yes, I probably would. But if we had an agreement that it was DH's reponsibility to plan, prep and cook the meals for the day, whilst I took responsibility for other things, I'd presume that providing just one (pretty basic) meal, not at a sensible meal time was weaponised incompetence, and I'd not be impressed.

Legomania · 10/08/2026 20:08

I have a small stomach and can't store up food like some people. So I'd definitely need something else, even if it was soup or a sandwich etc.

Also, I go to bed at midnight so there's no way I could go that long after a late lunch.

Justusethebloodyphone · 10/08/2026 20:14

I wouldn’t but DH want something. He would happily make a toastie or a big bowl of cereal or something. He doesn’t expect me to cook for him, and never when I’m not eating myself (I mean I do not sometimes to be kind but not when it’s hot and we’ve already had a bbq.

I probably would want a late dinner.

But why is he not making a proper dinner for you both, as you did at lunch? Why is the assumption that dinner is anything to do with you?

Jesus can't even see the exploitation that most men enact on the women they are supposed to value as human beings like them. It's just the air that we breathe. We, and you, deserve so much more.

theneighbourhadaparrot · 10/08/2026 20:23

it doesn't matter if people would want diner or not.

He can go and cook his own if he's hungry. It's not outrageous to have diner after a late lunch and not to want snacks, or sandwich. I strongly encourage my kids to have decent meals, in whatever quantity they need, rather than "snacks" and eating crap for the sake of it.

Pistachiocake · 10/08/2026 20:25

Linetree · 10/08/2026 18:13

I am bang smack in the middle of the healthy weight range, unusual as a middle aged woman. I eat three real meals a day, no snacks.

Yes, I'd be hungry if I skipped a meal, even if it meant eating two close together. More usual for me is a late breakfast but still wanting lunch at lunchtime.

In your circumstances I'd make a sandwich rather than 'dinner' but I'd definitely need a meal.

A fair number of people seem to be this way-as in eat quite a lot compared to some other people, yet stay within the weight. I know when I was really slim, I ate a lot, and felt ill if I missed a meal. Just shows how it's hormones/blood sugar/I don't know what, but not amount of food-because I ate lots at those 3 regular meals, but was so slim!
So I'd say it is unreasonable to think it's wrong if someone wants another meal, OP.

Snowcanwait · 10/08/2026 20:33

BashtheBishop · 10/08/2026 17:42

You're not being unreasonable to reply "Whatever you're cooking". But YABU to be policing someone else's hunger.

My mother always used to do this when I was little. She'd do Sunday lunch and then ask later if we wanted any tea. If I said yes I'd get, "Whaaaat?! After that huge meal?!" It was bloody hours ago!

Ditto! I don’t know how many times I’ve heard my 78 year old mother say ‘we won’t be needing dinner tonight’ or ‘I’ll just have a sandwich later’ after a very average sized lunch! Fair enough if that’s what you want but stop imposing it on all your kids like it is a given.

Linetree · 10/08/2026 20:37

Whether "what's for dinner" is a reasonable question surely depends on how the household usually operates. Even if the answer is I don't fancy anything sort yourself out, it would be all wrong for him to go ahead and make himself something if OP usually organises the food and had a family meal planned.

pinkdyno · 10/08/2026 20:39

Me, no. Kids and DH yes.

MIl does this random timing. Invites us for Sunday lunch then serves at 4pm.

by then kids have eaten each other.

I tried asking her to push it back to 5, she served at 8. 🤪😂

Cherrytree86 · 10/08/2026 20:57

Couldn’t you just put together a quick roast dinner for him, OP? It really doesn’t take that long once you get started. Or at a push, burger and chips might do him? @Eatinglettuceleaveswithchopsticks

Topseyt123 · 10/08/2026 23:51

I'd have asked him what on earth he thought the barbecue and salads were?

If we'd done what you did (the barbecue) then we would have expected to sort ourselves out for food later if we actually wanted any.
