If he wants something else he knows where the kitchen is 🤔

ComtesseDeSpair · 10/08/2026 17:17

I think he’s entitled to want dinner if he’s hungry even if you aren’t. But he’s entitled to sort that dinner himself because you just say “I’m not hungry, you can do whatever you want.”

TFImBackIn · 10/08/2026 17:18

I can see why he might want something to eat, but is he really expecting a cooked meal? Why can't he make himself some cheese on toast?

I know! I kind of scoffed and said ‘There’s things in the kitchen’

You're not being unreasonable to reply "Whatever you're cooking". But YABU to be policing someone else's hunger.

My mother always used to do this when I was little. She'd do Sunday lunch and then ask later if we wanted any tea. If I said yes I'd get, "Whaaaat?! After that huge meal?!" It was bloody hours ago!

timtamsarebetterthanpenguins · 10/08/2026 17:43

I'd probably want something for a late snack before bed but I'd just get a bowl of cereal or something.

Tink3rbell30 · 10/08/2026 18:10

No that's plenty. People eat too much in general. He knows where the kitchen is surely.

LoyalGoldMentor · 10/08/2026 18:12

One of my sons is like that if we have a meal earlier or later than usual! He knows where the bread is!

Linetree · 10/08/2026 18:13

I am bang smack in the middle of the healthy weight range, unusual as a middle aged woman. I eat three real meals a day, no snacks.

Yes, I'd be hungry if I skipped a meal, even if it meant eating two close together. More usual for me is a late breakfast but still wanting lunch at lunchtime.

In your circumstances I'd make a sandwich rather than 'dinner' but I'd definitely need a meal.

Absolutely this.

I would want something else to eat today, yes. Possibly not a full cooked dinner - but eating at 3pm doesn't mean I'm not going to eat again until breakfast tomorrow.

I'd have said 'I'm not cooking again, but help yourself to whatever' to him.

The title 'Would you want/need dinner after this?' suggests that you think it's unreasonable to want to eat for another 12 hours or so after a BBQ. And it's not. Some people will still be hungry by evening time.

WatchingTheStarsFromMyHammock · 10/08/2026 18:15

He is being a bit greedy to want a full dinner after such a large and late lunch. It's not unreasonable to be hungry later on though, but most people would just want something light, like was suggested above, something like cheese on toast.

He is also unreasonable to ask you what is for dinner when you have just fed him. Why can't he get himself something to eat if he is still hungry

My mother used to do the same! I had hollow legs as a child and I still get hungry. I’d definitely need beans on toast or something after having eaten at 3pm

hourspassed · 10/08/2026 18:31

Absolutely not and I love my food! I'd be reminding him where the toaster is.

Shedmistress · 10/08/2026 18:31

We have lunch nearly every day at 2 as our main meal so have toast or cereal around 6ish which we just do for ourselves. Absolutely no way am I cooking twice in one day.

BreakingBroken · 10/08/2026 18:33

after a large lunch like that, dinner would extremely light and might not involve me "cooking".

Elmtrees · 10/08/2026 18:38

There's nothing wrong in wanting to eat again this evening, most people would need more food before bed, if they last ate at 3/3.30 p.m. He shouldn't expect you to prepare another hot meal though.

Cora0 · 10/08/2026 18:41

Unless he’s lost both of his hands in a tragic accident I would be telling him to get to fuck the kitchen and figure it out.

Silverbirchleaf · 10/08/2026 18:43

I’d want a snack, but we’re talking toasted sandwich or cheese and crackers, not a ‘dinner’.

dontmalbeconme · 10/08/2026 18:43

Why was lunch served so late? 3-3.30pm is neither lunch time, nor dinner time. I'd be pissed off about that for starters.

I wouldn't be happy with being expected to have just one meal to cover lunch and dinner, as I don't overeat and wouldn't/couldn't eat two meals worth of food in one go.

Whose job it is to make the dinner depends on the agreed fair distribution of labour generally. I mean, I'm pretty sure most people would knock themselves up an omelette or something, but honestly I'd expect the person whose turn it was to make the dinner to actually do that, if they have an agreed set of responsibilities each.

Fidgety31 · 10/08/2026 18:45

Do you make his food like you would for a child ? Why is he asking you ?

i would not find such incompetence attractive tbh.

SandwichSuperstar · 10/08/2026 18:47

It makes no odds whether the various people here would want or need dinner.

The obvious problem is your husband using you like his personal maid.

What's led him to believe dinner is your responsibility?

Gowlett · 10/08/2026 18:49

Freezer diving, leftover BBQ, or a frigging butty.

KayFabe · 10/08/2026 18:53

People are BBQing? Madness. It's tinder out there and all it takes is one tiny spark when it's this dry.

A decent gas BBQ is no different to using a gas cooker in your kitchen.
