As the book launch is coming, let the discussion continue.

First thread: https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/5563599-the-jason-arday-scandal?utm_campaign=thread&utm_medium=share
This is lifted from the thread in the education section, which is an interesting summary

Or AIBU with not letting this fade away?

I think the type of break matters. I broke my leg, declined a plaster cast and carried on as normal. Admittedly I didn't run a marathon but then I've never run a marathon without a broken leg. Some breaks you couldn't walk, some need surgery, mine was not painless but I could still walk round as normal. I think I have a high pain threshold and maybe he did too.

From AI:
Femoral Stress Fractures: While a hairline or stress fracture might technically allow brief, highly painful movement initially, running on it can easily force the bone to snap completely (displace), requiring major surgery.

So, debunked.

Well the doctor in fracture clinic was happy with my choice and said he'd do the same if he had the same sort of fracture.

Was his fracture of the femur, mine wasn't the thigh but between ankle and knee, the fibula which isn't actually weight bearing. My tibia was intact and if it had broken I would have needed a cast.

You know the average will mean not all have reached that level.

I think 'average' might have been used here more in the sense of 'usual' or 'normal'.

InSlovakiaTheCapitalOfCourseIsBratislava · 18/08/2026 14:06

It’s all the little things that make it hard to believe .
A stress fracture in tibia or fibula from too much running, perfectly plausible, actually what probably happened if it happened at all
Fracture to the femur? That’s where it gets ridiculous

Too much to hope that someone writing an article might actually say what they mean and not leave us having to guess.

That's why I asked if he actually said it was a fracture of the femur. All I could find was he claimed it was his leg which could be tibia, fibula or femur. My fracture wasn't a stress fracture.

I don't think it's that difficult. But my goodness you are reaching here in order to argue that loads and loads of professors have achieved significantly less in their field than Arday did.

Where did I say anything about loads and loads of professors and what they had achieved? If you are quoting what the average is it doesn't tell us if he is way out of the norm. Telling us the minimum would be more useful, if he hasn't achieved the minimum it is clear there was an issue, if he hasn't achieved the average it tells us much less.

Just to add in A&E I was told I must have a cast it was the only option. Doctor in fracture clinic disagreed. It worked out fine, I didn't have the cast and almost 20 years later it hasn't caused any issues.

Sigh. You said that the average means not everyone who got to be professor will have reached that level. Which would obviously mean that quite a lot didn't. But in fact I think what we are being told here is about the average requirements (and those might vary a little bit, with some institutions placing more weight on funding bids, some on publications, some, in very specific cases, a super-interesting but highly unlikely backstory, hence there being an average).

But I don't think you will find many people who work in academia who can honestly look at Arday's output or career and say that would usually merit a professorship.

CreativeGreen · 18/08/2026 14:29

Great news about your fracture though.

You know we're talking about a Cambridge University professorship, and professorial chair at that? Average wouldn't even be a starting point for that sort of post.

Not sure why it was quoted then as it doesn't seem to provide relevant evidence.

Lot of thinking but facts would be useful.

Great news about your fracture though.

Thank you. So glad I discussed it in fracture clinic. Dr said it would be more painful without the cast (it wasn't that bad) but the results would be better.

I can't believe this thread is still up and the vultures are still circling even after the man has tragically taken his life because of speculation like this! Absolutley disgusting. You should all be bloody ashamed of yourselves.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 18/08/2026 14:53

I’m dipping in and out of this thread, cos, it’s interesting.

But, @Whatwerewetalkingaboutif you don’t like it, why are you still contributing. You’re now one of the ‘vultures’.

Why don’t you just hide the damn thread??

She's a good vulture, circling slightly higher, high enough to look down at the other vultures and sneer, but ultimately still circling the same spot.

The facts are that requirements for a professorship are very much higher than Arday could be said to have met.

If that’s how you genuinely feel, then I don’t know why you don’t just hide the thread, etc.

You seem implacable (which isn’t criticism), so no one will be able to change your mind, and vice versa.

I completely agree with @Everanewbie’s post.

He must have. He did his PhD viva a few days after his brain tumour operation.

We seem to be saying Cambridge, Liverpool John Moores, Wrexham University. Same difference! What’s good wnough for one is good enough for all.

InSlovakiaTheCapitalOfCourseIsBratislava · 18/08/2026 16:38

the transition from Liverpool John Moore to Cambridge is the bit that seem most implausible at times
