To want my own space on holiday?

I didn’t speak to my partner’s parents for 4 years, only in the past 6-12 months have we decided to put the past behind us and be civil etc, which I’m happy with.

My partner has booked a caravan for us to stay in (me, partner, his parents and our kids, and the dog) which I’m going along but the more I think about it the more I would like our own caravan as we would be either in the twin room or sofa bed - and I’d just like my own space for a night in case my IBS flares up/just to have my own ‘proper’ bed and breathing space on an evening. It’s £399 for another caravan which I’m happy to contribute.

DP says it’s just cos I don’t want to spend time with his parents etc, which isn’t the case! I’m just one of those people who needs their own space to decompress on an evening. I’d happily stay with them until midnight or whatever and just part to sleep then see them in the morning. AIBU?

Can you get a caravan close by?
I think it’s an excellent idea if the relationship is still a but fragile. That way you can focus on having fun/ spending time doing normal things without having to be with them all the time.

I would extend some invitations or make some plans for group activities when you tell them

UnNiddeRides · 09/08/2026 19:30

You would be happy to contribute to another caravan for £399? Who would pay the rest?

FrederickTheFrog · 09/08/2026 19:32

@UnNiddeRides My partner, it would come out of the family pot as I’m not working at the moment.

@Pinkissmart That’s exactly what I was wanting to do, get a caravan close by, on the same site. It’s not personal to them genuinely, I would want a break even if I was staying with my closest friends in that proximity for 3 nights!

I wouldn’t want to share a caravan with anyone that wasn’t my partner or child. I get social burn out pretty quickly and need my own space.

Humanswarm · 09/08/2026 19:36

Having just been away with my inlaws..I beg you to get your own space. Do it for me!

mondaytosunday · 09/08/2026 19:37

I can’t imagine sharing a caravan in with any one! You can hear everything. Sounds like a nightmare even if you were on the best of terms with your in laws.

ShetlandishMum · 09/08/2026 19:38

I would never share a caravan with my in laws. I like ttem but no way.

How much of it can you contribute? Are you on mat leave? Why wouldn’t it be the family pot?

gamerchick · 09/08/2026 19:40

Fuck that. Tell him he and the kids can go and you'll stay hime and if he comes out with any blackmail.shit again there will be a fall out.

Im not exactly sure how you count that as contributing. It sounds like your partner would be paying it all.

Branleuse · 09/08/2026 19:41

I'd tell him that absolutely you don't want to have to share a caravan with his parents. That you've made a lot of progress tolerating them, so why is he pushing it now and risking going back to square one?

Delatron · 09/08/2026 19:43

No way - it’s a sure fire way to ruin the relationship again.

I would only be happy to share with DH and kids. You need some space and you’ll all be on top of each other. Awful!

If he doesn’t back down then he can go and you stay at home and book a proper family holiday another time.
Don’t do it!

Doingtheboxerbeat · 09/08/2026 19:44

It's sounds awful all round, who's Idea was this ? I can't think of anything worse, IBS or no.
Also contributing 🤔 I'm not sure about this one.

goingtotown · 09/08/2026 19:45

I would happily go without a holiday if I had to share a caravan with in-laws or anyone else other than my DH & children.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 09/08/2026 19:46

He’s mad to think that will work! He needs to go on his own with the dc, or get a second caravan.

theneighbourhadaparrot · 09/08/2026 19:47

Sharing a caravan with any adult that is not your own partner is lunacy.

I would sell it to give his parents the space and privacy THEY should have. It won't be that much fun with you and your kids.

SisSuffragette · 09/08/2026 19:57

There is no way I would share a caravan with my in laws. I did once with my own parents and never again!

Dontwanttheseboobies · 09/08/2026 19:59

Absolutely no way I could do this. Definitely get a separate caravan!

Pinkflamingo10 · 09/08/2026 20:01

I would never share a caravan with the inlaws. Or my own parents !! Too much of a squeeze. Sounds awful. 100% book two caravans near to each other.

Exactly! Be upfront.

Shinyandnew1 · 09/08/2026 20:04

You didn’t speak to them for 4 years but agreed to share a caravan with them on holiday?! How did this come about?! Why would your DH pay but get the crap room?!

No, just. No.

DelphiniumBlue · 09/08/2026 20:04

IBS and one toilet with rubbish soundproofing between 4 adults, and however many kids? I can see why that wouldn't work.

LittleMonks11 · 09/08/2026 20:08

Sweet lord. I’m breaking out in a sweat at the thought of this set up.

Sartre · 09/08/2026 20:09

I’d never want to share a caravan with anyone other than DH and DC so yes, absolutely get your own.
