To complain about neighbour's BBQ...

Currently sat indoors with all windows shut and extractor fan on full blast, yet neighbours charcoal BBQ smell is still coming to house.

They insist on lighting it and cooking close to our house, even though they could move it down the garden, somewhat.

I obviously don't want to stop them enjoying a BBQ, but I asked if they could move it away from our house (it's closer to ours than it is theirs). We settled on them telling us when they would be lighting the BBQ.

Anything practically I could do? A powerful fan to try and redirect the smoke, ha?

Hardly miserable to not want your house smoky and stinking of burnt dead animals. Yes, I hate BBQs.

The summer will be over soon enough.

I think it's really antisocial of them not to move it so that it disturbs neighbours the least possible. But unfortunately that sort of consideration isn't legally required and seems to be becoming less and less common.

Have you asked if they could get and use a portable extraction fan? I wouldn't expect them to be 100% but it might help.

Since it's right by your fence, could you put up trellis and grow plants that would trap a bunch of the smoke and channel the rest high enough that it doesn't go straight in your windows?

Also possibly some kind of Pavlovian approach. Your smoke alarm going off every time their BBQ fills your house with smoke?

^^ Love this idea!

Get yourself some well rotted manure from the garden centre and put it on your garden. Fight stinky with stinky hehe

I love the smell of BBQs, is it really that much of a problem?

The smell of BBQs makes me hungry. Maybe if you’re really nice, they’ll invite you over.

I hate the f*cking things, so antisocial.
