To complain about neighbour's BBQ...

Ant1cs · 09/08/2026 12:23

Currently sat indoors with all windows shut and extractor fan on full blast, yet neighbours charcoal BBQ smell is still coming to house.

They insist on lighting it and cooking close to our house, even though they could move it down the garden, somewhat.

I obviously don't want to stop them enjoying a BBQ, but I asked if they could move it away from our house (it's closer to ours than it is theirs). We settled on them telling us when they would be lighting the BBQ.

Anything practically I could do? A powerful fan to try and redirect the smoke, ha?

I hate the smell of bbqs.
Luckily I don’t have neighbours.

Laughorbloodycry · 09/08/2026 18:50

Only on MN can you be talked out of your own reality and have to endure suggestions it's all your problem OP.

Many people are so thoughtless they care only for themselves.

Many, when asked to adapt their behaviour ( e.g, move it closer to their own house and let the smoke waft in there), seem to gain some desperate need for control or pleasure by purposefully doubling down when someone reasonably asks for something. E.g move the bloody stenching BBQ towards your own home...

I find it pretty disappointing how CF neighbours can be.

I politely asked neighbours to stop blocking a communal access entrance that made it difficult for me to get in and out my own bloody home. When politely asking, they doubled down and blocked me out. I was the problem for asking. Absolute CFs.

There's not much you can do other than close your windows, get your fan out and accept your neighbours don't care one bit about you and your request. I would not do one thing or go out my way for them in any way going forward.

BBQ season won't last too long now.

We cook on electric plate with a lid outside. Lots of mess with BBQs, hardly any our way and still get a good flavour and not burnt (normally). We put paprika/chilli/garlic/herbs and a little oil depending what we are cooking.

feministmom4ever · 09/08/2026 18:57

Just close your window.

How often do people actually have bbqs? Ive only had 2 this year.

Every night for weeks and weeks. The OP would hate me. It's only on for a short while though, you know it'll stop unlike when people play loud music.

MyLimeGuide · 09/08/2026 18:57

I love bbqs

Your house is literally full of smoke?

Are they feeding 5000 people using only wet smoky wood or something? Even the fiercest event barbeques I've seen don't emit much more than wisps which vanishes into the atmosphere pdq. I don't see how your entire house is so full of smoke that you have had to rewash clothes (that are presumably in cupboards and drawers?)

I live in a place where the back gardens of about 15 hours are all in a sort of U, and families often cook outside. Never once has there been more than a waft on the air.

What's it like on 5 November? Do they have a large Wicker Man figurine set up?

The entire house absolutely stunk of smoke (as in every room), and clothes that were drying on airers then stunk of said smoke.

I'm not quite sure why that is so hard to comprehend?

We cook outside most nights during the summer. We have a gas barbecue, it isn't smoky at all, plus I can actually cook so it isn't smoke and burned sausage smells all evening. However if I had neighbours who were shit at barbecues and make loads of smoke and smells, I would be really annoyed, so I do empathise with the OP.

I bbq pretty much year round on charcoal. The bbq is down the garden though and any smoke is less offending than tit neighbours constant run of bonfires.

Every weekend, which is their right.

I'd rather they have one everyday, if moved the BBQ away from our house, over the current situation

Edited

So once a week? Just close the windows!

ShetlandishMum · 09/08/2026 19:05

Move to place without neighbours.
Of course they can have a BBQ in their garden without consulting you.

timtamsarebetterthanpenguins · 09/08/2026 19:06

Ant1cs · 09/08/2026 18:29

It's positioned on dry grass anyway.

Moving it away from my property means it will also be on dry grass, but further away from my fence, property so is a safer option.

Maybe they CBA with the faff of moving it - which is also their right. They don't have to do something just because it would be better for you.

Just close your windows and buy a fan if it's warm. It's only once a week in the summer, it's not like they do it constantly.

I did, still came in throught the window vents due to the proximity. Smoke is lighter an air which means it can travel through even the smallest gaps.

New approach: seal window vents and get an industrial fan set up to redirect smoke away from house.

You're no more entitled to having a smoke free garden than them being able to have a BBQ whenever and wherever they like on their own property.

Then again, common decency does come into play. I would naturally feel guilty if smoke was pouring into neighbours' gardens because I don't like pissing others off.

Notonthestairs · 09/08/2026 19:09

“The faff of moving a BBQ”?! Most of them are on wheels.

Why do people position their BBQs closer to their neighbours houses than their own home? Because they smell.

For context, they used to BBQ away from my house last year, never a problem. They repositioned it close to my house for some reason.

You really can't ask people not to have a BBQ in their own garden in the summer.

you have to be a certain kind of CF to put your BBQ nearer your neighbour's house than your own because you dont' want your own smell and smoke.

oh please, BBQ stink. It's telling the neighbours are having theirs nearer the OP's house than their own.

I do BBQ. Near MY house because I am not a twat and I respect the neighbours. I have to close all the windows because it stink, the same way I keep the kitchen door shut when I cook. It's my problem, but it's so rude to impact your neighbours

You don't know that that's the reason, though. Maybe it's more convenient to have it there for whatever reason.

Hollyhobbi · 09/08/2026 19:20

I’ll send over some rain from Dublin. That should put a dampener on it!!

ThatLemonBee · 09/08/2026 19:23

Stop being a miserable person ?

NewHere83 · 09/08/2026 19:26

I think position a large fan next to your fence to blow the smoke back towards their garden .

NewHere83 · 09/08/2026 19:28

Also possibly some kind of Pavlovian approach. Your smoke alarm going off every time their BBQ fills your house with smoke?
