Friends mocking my engagement :(

My fiance proposed to me this week after 3 years together, just a day after our 3 year anniversary!

He had planned to propose in his home country when we visited a few months back but it was very busy seeing all this family (his mum is British before any comments about wanting a UK visa!).

We had a stressful time coming back and I had been prepping for a new job interview. He came home from work around 9, told me to put some shoes on as he wanted to show me something…

He drove me to a road and got out and said “this is the first place I ever said I loved you” and then proposed, with a gorgeous delicate ring!

I was on cloud 9, so happy. I always told him I didn’t like big proposals and I’d been embarrassed if someone saw, so this felt perfect and quite romantic.

Saw my best friends today. Both of them were saying how cheap it was, how it was thoughtless and that they’d be sick if they were proposed to in their pyjamas (like I was), and that he could have done something more romantic. They were laughing about it as well.

It’s made me really really sad. Aibu to think that the proposal was quite thoughtful… the first place he said “I love you” is quite sweet?

They sound jealous. Real friends support you not just through the hard times but also through the best times.

Terfarina · Yesterday 16:07

Your friends sound like people who think getting married is all about the wedding rather than the marriage to come. Utterly shallow.

my husband proposed to me sat on a sofa in front of top gear with a ring that is not to my taste and was way too big. 18 years on we still have a strong marriage.

Your friends are bitter and/or jealous. My DH proposed when he was 19 (I was 18) 23yrs ago at a med school party in a corridor, when he was drunk. You can imagine the comments. We have been together for 23yrs and married for 18.

Stablegirl2012 · Yesterday 16:11

Congratulations! 🤩 your friends sound incredibly rude and very shallow - I hope you and your fiancé wallow in your celebrations and stay excited for your future together 🥰

diddl · Yesterday 16:12

Well you were wearing something Op so you've got the march on me😊😂

Engagements are not all about expensive hotel rooms , flowers , & recording it to put on social media .
Something meanfull , and heartfelt ( as it was ) should mean so much more .
Disregard your ' friends ' opinions .

My proposal was "Do me a favour, will you? Marry me."

I think that's lovely.

I've been scouring my memory for what details I know of other proposals. Back then, even those of the most attention loving sorts seem to have been very low key. I don't know when it changed to the Disney on Ice spectaculars expected now, but have suspicions it is not unconnected with Instagram.

I actually feel very cross with your 'friends' @UpShitsCreek . Please don't let them in any way spoil this for you (and don't invite them to the wedding)

bridgetreilly · Yesterday 16:26

Your proposal was for you, not for social media, and that automatically makes it 100% more romantic than any other proposal. It sounds lovely, OP. Congratulations.

I think anyone who says they want a performative "proposal" is vacuous and shallow. Ignore them and reconsider whether they're real friends to you.

This. I find it incredible how these days the proposal is expected to be as much of a show as the wedding. Only a few weeks ago there was a thread where the OP had been proposed to in Venice, or was it Rome, and she was moaning that her fiancé hadn’t booked a photographer!

lizzielizard · Yesterday 16:32

These are NOT your friends. Congratulations on your engagement which sounds wonderfully romantic to me. Personal and private. Just how it should be!

OneAmusedDuck · Yesterday 16:33

It was a beautiful proposal because he thought about what would make you happy, not about how it would look to anyone else. It shows how much he knows you and cares about you.
Ignore the bitches - congratulations OP ❤️

raisinglittlepeople12 · Yesterday 16:33

Not real friends but I’d also be disappointed in the proposal. Different strokes for different folks though!

OneGoldKoala · Yesterday 16:33

What a thoughtful proposal! Congratulations ❤️

Marieb19 · Yesterday 16:34

You need new friends.

It was a beautiful proposal. Congratulations! Your friends are horrible.

This.

Congratulations. Ignore the pathetic 'friends'

itsgettingweird · Yesterday 16:37

Oh wow that’s such a lovely proposal.

And obviously genuine because he remember where you were when he first said he loved you which most have been over 2 years ago.

Congratulations Flowers

Saw my best friends today. Both of them were saying how cheap it was, how it was thoughtless and that they’d be sick if they were proposed to in their pyjamas (like I was), and that he could have done something more romantic. They were laughing about it as well. - well f**k them is all I can say.

MickyMoonshine · Yesterday 16:39

Your boyfriend sounds lovely, the proposal was really thoughtful.
Your ‘friends’ are mean and i’d be reconsidering the friendship tbh.

Boomer55 · Yesterday 16:39

Ignore them.

Comeondoreen · Yesterday 16:40

They are jealous of you for some reason and therefore need to bring you down to maintain their own egos.

Are they all single? Are you prettier or thinner than them? Wealthier? There will be something.

CoffeeBeansGalore · Yesterday 16:42

What he did was sweet and personal. Congratulations!

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · Yesterday 16:43

DH proposed to me in the kitchen when we were preparing a meal. I was something really romantic like “I think we should get married” 😂😂

Very little of our engagement, wedding or marriage is instagram worthy but it has lasted over 26 years. Your relationship and how you celebrate it belongs to you and your DP and nobody else.

UpShitsCreek · Yesterday 16:43

Oh thank you for all the responses I didn’t expect so many ☺️

I am very happy and my fiance is too! My parents are absolutely over the moon.

I saw a comment about judgement of character as these are my best friends. They’re my oldest friends from primary school, and our mums are all very close. I see them 2/3 times a year. One friend is married, other one single.

Perfect proposal. I absolutely hate all these proposals we keep seeing on the Internet - only done for clicks. It was personal and how it should be

I wouldn't bother inviting them to the wedding, they'll be posing in front of the photographer to get pictures to to put on their Instagrams. You need real people in your life, not plastic people

Big congratulations to you and your fiance - give him a hug from me, he sounds a keeper

AllTheChicken · Yesterday 16:45

Aw he sounds so lovely and thoughtful. Congratulations! I wanted a similar proposal, no pressure to perform in front of others, just us. I think it's wonderful that he took your feelings on board, its a massive green flag!

Your friends are red flags - even if it isnt their type of proposal, they absolutely should not be laughing at yours. If they had concerns about your df and him being cheap they could have done so in a more respectful way
