Am I cooking shit or being stingy??

Currently on holiday with my sister, her husband, their 8 year old DS Amanda 14 year old daughter

i had originally booked it for just me, DH and Ds (8) but I invited them last minute at no cost to them as sister was stressed about money and not being able to take the kids out.

They have complained non stop about the food. First evening we got a takeaway but first morning they asked what was for breakfast so I said I had porridge or Greek yogurt and fruit and nuts. BIL burst out laughing saying “so it’s either prison food or bird food?”. Sister said “don’t you have anything in for the kids?” So I said I’d got the porridge for the kids and I have honey, jam or Nutella to stir into it. Teen rolled her eyes and sister said “I’ll go to shop later and get something in”. Was it really so bad???

that evening I made spaghetti bolognese. 75g dry pasta each and a 600g pack of mince shared between us all with mushrooms, bacon and various veggies. When I served it BIL pulled a face and said where’s the rest of it? They all started laughing - teen dramatically pulled a bit up from her plate and let it fall back down slowly whilst pulling a face. Sister said “what’s up with you?” And teen said “it tastes funny”. They all laughed.

I was getting pissed off at this point and told them they’re welcome to buy and cook their own food if they’d prefer. BIL said “oh here we go, here’s the catch” so I said no I’m more than happy to carry on buying and cooking but not to be insulted and laughed at. DH then decided to tell everyone I’m always on weird diets which isn’t true, I have ibs so I do try and restrict certain things but he made it out to be about weight loss which it isn’t. DS said he likes the food and DN said “yeah but you’re used to eating crap”

So yesterday I refused to cook. They’d bought their own cereals but when it came to evening meal I told them I was cooking a curry for us 3 so they might want to pop to shop and get something in which they did and came back with dohnuts and loads of sweet food. Fair enough.

tonight sister had told me she can’t afford to go back to shop as they hadn’t budgeted for repeated shopping trips. I’ve told her I’m cooking paella and they’re welcome to join us without insults. She said she’d talk to them.

as of 10 minutes ago teen was still asking what was for dinner so she clearly daren’t tell her.

Am I really cooking shit or being stingy?? I’m starting to wonder if it’s me

It is, but pasta is cheap she could cook some more, if it doesn’t get eaten she can make a pasta salad with it.

it does sound like very controlled portions.

It doesn't matter if it's free. It also wouldn't matter if the portion was the size of a toddler meal. She's given them a free holiday and she's even feeding them. All they need to do is say thank you and offer to wash up.

If they are still hungry then they are free to feed themselves.

Why the hell is the portion size the focus here and not the rude and ungrateful guests?

Bit rich of you (unlike your fatty bolognese) to accuse others of making stuff up when you have repeatedly derailed the entire thread by fabricating some imaginary watery bolognese. If you don't know how to correctly cook a bolognese without making watery when including vegetables then just say that, no need to accuse others of substandard cooking just because yours isn't up to scratch.

Edited

I havent derailed the thread - ive offered valuable advice on what would be expected when you organise something like this

Its unfortunate, thumbelina, that you seem to lack the taste required for good food catered to your guests

Watery bolognese with a tiny bit of meat isnt what i'd offer. I'd offer a good helping of bolognese, cooked properly, in its fat yes, with enough pasta available to force a coma!

Thats what you do when cooking for people you like, we dont all like to exist on porridge and mushrooms thanks very much.

Oh FFS they're lucky to have been offered anything at all. Please move along with your watery Bolognese BS.

'Lucky to have been offered anything at all'

So they were supposed to cook for themselves, is that what youre saying?

I cant imagine renting out a holiday home with a fabulous kitchen, inviting people, and not expect to cater at least a good few meals. Especially the first days of the holiday!

I'd have planned breakfast and dinner and then discussed how dining would work. I have repeatedly said that, they as guests, should've offered to pay for food.

I also said I wonder if there's more here, as the comment from the bil suggests underlying issues rather than just this, which is maybe why they didnt offer to pay for food, I dont know.

JoshLymanSwagger · 06/08/2026 18:49

Some posters on this thread seem to be confused by the word "Guest" when you are all guests in Self-Catering holiday accommodation.

If BIL and Niece wanted a bigger meal - 👉🏻 there's the kitchen, crack on, shut up or fuck off home and stop spoiling OPs holiday.

Delatron · 06/08/2026 18:55

If my sister had offered me a free holiday I’d be in that kitchen cooking and I’d also be doing the food shop!

Tell them to either buy their own food and cook or go home. Enjoy the paella and the rest of your holiday.

whippersnapper55 · 06/08/2026 19:02

I'd be telling them all to fuck off home! I certainly wouldn't be cooking for them or sharing my food with them ever again. Why are you cooking for everyone? They're a bunch of cheeky fuckers 😡

Yes obviously to adults are responsible for feeding their own family.

Obviously to CFs like you and SIL/BIL, that's outrageous.

God the sheer aggression on here, over something like this.

OnTheBoardwalk · 06/08/2026 19:14

@Hydranga What you all doing when you aren’t eating or baking? Are you doing trips out or staying in the accommodation together?

MrsOctaviaCharlotteSmythe · 06/08/2026 19:16

Hydranga · 06/08/2026 13:48

I love cooking. I purposely got somewhere with a nice big kitchen for this reason. DS and I are baking this afternoon.

my rule is if anyone cooks for me, is always say thank you and remember manners

I would cook one more group meal.

The first person to complain or pull a face would have their plate taken away from in front if them & put in the fridge. When they moan, Id point out if they dont want it they dont have to have it. The next one to side against you gets same treatment. Any moaning about hunger or finances...? They can eat what they were served or go buy their own.
Ideally lock any non-fridge items in the boot of your car first. And tell dh in advance.

Adult behaviour would be to discuss catering with your sister, but I just couldnt tolerate the neices or bil behaviour so woukd probably not manage to behave like an adult!

I cannot show images directly, but 75g of cooked spaghetti is about one small side portion or half of a standard cup. It fills a small spot on a plate, weighing much less than a dry portion because cooked pasta absorbs water.

What 75g of Cooked Spaghetti Looks Like
Portion size: About one small handful or half a cup.
Plate coverage: Covers a small area in the center of a normal dinner plate.
Weight note: Dry pasta doubles or triples in weight once you boil it in water.

Comparison to Dry Pasta
Dry weight: 75g of dry spaghetti makes about 160g to 180g of cooked spaghetti.
Cooked weight: 75g of already cooked spaghetti means you started with only about 25g to 30g of dry pasta.
If you want, tell me if you are counting calories or planning a meal, and I can help you figure out the right portion size.

Here is what a small portion of cooked spaghetti looks like on a plate:

As you can see, a 75g portion of
cooked spaghetti
is quite compact:
Size: It forms a tight, small mound about the size of a fist or half a cup.
Visual Impression: On a standard large dinner plate, this healthy, calorie-conscious serving will look relatively small and leave a lot of empty space around the edges.
Would you like some ideas on how to add low-calorie vegetables to this portion to make the plate look fuller?

Here is exactly what a small, healthy portion of
cooked spaghetti
looks like:

Visual Guide to 75 Grams Cooked

The Kitchen Scale: When weighed out exactly to 2.0 ounces (around 75 grams) on a food scale, the cooked noodles create a very loose pile that barely fills the bottom center of a small bowl.
Plate Coverage: Once placed on a standard dinner plate, it forms a small mound roughly the size of a single tight fist or half of a measuring cup.
The Reality Check: If you add sauce or protein, it might look slightly larger, but plain cooked noodles at this weight are a much smaller serving than what most restaurants provide

75 grams of cooked pasta is a small amount, yes.

What your AI generated nonsense has failed to comprehend is that 75g of uncooked pasta is a normal portion. It almost doubles in weight when cooked.

Stop using google AI before using your fucking brain.

@Hydranga you know yourself they are being ‘entitled rude twats’, just quietly seethe knowing this is the last holiday with you.

It’s always the freeloaders that are ungrateful and intolerable.

The guests were paying for ‘fuck-all’, so should be grateful that OP and her family shared their food.

It’s 75g per person btw.

They were invited only because OP felt sorry for her DSis not because she wanted them there. So she’s shared her holiday, then shared her food and the freeloaders couldn’t even show a bit of gratitude with thanking OP for the food she bought and cooked for them, instead they chose to moan and insult. If I was the DSis I would be having stern words with my H and children letting them know exactly how we came to be there and the generosity being given to us, so watch their mouths!

I think youre rude. Someone is allowed to disagree you know, without being insulted 🙄

And i have said repeatedly how the sister should've behaved. In my original comment i said that their response was rude.

But i also said i would've served something else and that the op is being unreasonable in that respect

I’m on holiday myself!! I’m not here to be a private chef! I have no ambitions to be the best “host” ever! I’m on holiday! I asked sister if she wanted to join us on holiday. She said she had no money to contribute so I said that’s fine, we’ll have plenty to go around. This didn’t mean I was expecting to be a “host” - just that we’ll all share the accommodation and food.
again, I’m not “hosting” I’m sharing
