To ask why people give real details to litter wardens?

We don't have them where I live but I keep reading about mad situations where people are fined for putting a coffee cup down to check an email etc.

So why don't they just walk away? The wardens don't have powers of arrest surely? And if not that why not just tell them sure I take your silly ticket seriously and I'm Sarah Smith of 1 High Street Wisconsin USA???

Wonder what the stats for hassling women Vs men are also.

There is a page on TikTok where a guy goes around following these people and tells the victims to just walk into any shop as they can’t follow you in.

Because it's a criminal offense to give incorrect details. From the gov guidance on littering enforcement

8.24 It is an offence if an alleged offender fails to provide their appropriate details for an FPN. For example, name and address.

8.25 The police may be called to assist if the offender refuses to provide their details or provides false details. A PCSO may detain the offender for a maximum of 30 minutes before a police constable arrives. If a person refuses to supply their details, or provides false details, they may be liable on summary conviction to a fine. This fine would not exceed level 3 on the standard scale of the sentencing guidelines for environmental offences.

I think you are coming at this from the wrong view point. If there weren't so many antisocial people dropping litter then Litter Wardens wouldn't be seen as necessary.

I don't know where Litter Wardens are employed. We don't have them here. Just a band of wonderful volunteers who go round clearing up after the mindless, disgusting people who don't give a damn about the environment or other people.

Presumably people give the correct details because they are aware they’ve done something wrong.

if I drop litter and someone picks me up on it I feel shame and I take whatever the punishment is. I’m not going to run away/give stupid details over something so trivial

The question is not about actually littering oh my God. It is about people falsely accused of littering.

I know what you mean... There have been loads of story of people accused of littering when they actually haven't done so. For example, by putting a coffee cup down next to them whilst they're reading a paper on a park bench.

People don't seem to get the distinction.

In those circumstances they're not getting my details. Watch how quickly the police come running to the scene under those circumstances.

But this is Mumsnet and here many people skim the OP and answer the question they want to answer, not the one which was asked.
The answer is that giving false info is an offence and if falsely accused and fined they should appeal.

Presumably this is an example the OP is talking about. I'd wager these wardens pick on easy targets and don't go after the real louts. £500 fine as well.

I saw on a local fb group they have now started trying to hand fines out to people for leaving receipts in your supermarket trolley!

A shopper had took their Asda trolley back to the stand and the enforcement officer followed them and tried to fine them, they had to prove it wasn't their receipt by showing their bank card details.

I mean that's private property so surely Asda have been paid off to have them patrolling on their property, a bit like car park fines ...

If you're incorrectly accused and give your details you can appeal the fine. Just like you can appeal a parking fine or other fixed penalty notice.

If you're incorrectly accused and you give false details, you've committed a criminal offence. The fact that you didn't litter - even if true - wouldnt be a defence.

It maybe a criminal offence to provide false details, but they wouldn’t know if you did. You aren’t dealing with the Police, who can find out pretty sharpish if you’re bullshitting them.

Wasn't someone fined for pouring coffee down a drain instead of ditching it in a bin? They thought they were doing a kind thing

.... and neighbourhood watch like they have in Japan. Seniors who go round telling people what is and what isn't done in Japan.

My friend was outside his office making a phone call when one accused him of dropping a fag butt. He doesn’t smoke. After telling them that he then said ‘ok well you tell me exactly which one is mine!’ As there were a few littered about. He said ‘you have no evidence so I’ll bid you good day’ and went back into his office where they couldn’t follow him.

It's more hassle and life admin though.
I don't litter ever, but if I were accused of it by one of the wardens, I'd just run off.

This is all news to me.
The issue where I live is that nobody EVER seems to be penalised in any way for dropping litter.

Some areas do such as Manchester. I know this because 1 was watching me and DP as we were sat eating a sandwich on a bench. He looked very disappointed when I got up and walked to a bin and threw the rubbish in the bin.
