AIBU to be fed up with a dog p*ssing all over our gate?

I’m getting so fed up of this but husband thinks it’s “just what dogs do” so asking for options (and possible solutions?)

Someone keeps letting their dog p*ss all over our front gate and garden path, it’s always there when I leave the house at 7.30 (we have a metal gate so it goes through the gate and all over the path) If it was on the garden wall it wouldn’t bother me…

I’m fed up of having to clean the path every day but don’t see how I can stop it happening? It’s especially annoying me as our toddler normally sits down on the end of the path to step down into the street as it’s quite a steep step. I’ve obviously had to stop him doing this otherwise he’d be sitting in a puddle of dog p*ss.

I’ll be getting a camera doorbell but if someone is this inconsiderate they’ll probably continue to do it anyway even if I manage to catch them?

Put a sign outside?
If that doesn’t work you’ll have to be out there early to remonstrate or sling a bucket of water through the gate.

Dogs seem to pee where other dogs have peed. I don't know exactly what to use, but maybe cleaning the area thoroughly with Jeyes fluid and then spraying with something repellant to dogs?

Yetanothername3 · 02/08/2026 13:29

Mostly this is not dogs having a pee, but my bil calls p-mail, which is male dogs marking their area. I have no idea how you could prevent this, as we only walk my dognephew in woodland.

YorkshirePuddingsGreatestFan · 02/08/2026 13:37

Dogs hate strong smells like chilli powder or olbas oil. If you have any of them, you could put them around the gate. The dog is unlikely to pee there if it smells off putting to them.

I did this to discourage a neighbours dog who was coming onto my drive and weeing on my front door step.

OneNaiceSnail · 02/08/2026 13:38

Put a sign on your gate saying please stop letting your dog piss up my property. Bonus points for adding a description up if you know what they look like

Jeyes fluid every time.
If it’s good enough for stables it’s good enough for your gate.
Try it.

I had a similar issue, and I washed the area with a bleach solution. That stopped it.

Dogs tend to over-pee other dogs, ( bitches and males ime) so if one does it, there will be repeats. Bleach was the only thing that neutralised the smell ( chlorine vs ammonia ) .

Warning about using Jeyes fluid. It is extremely toxic to the environment and other animals that might walk over the area. So make sure you wipe it off properly if you do use it.

Try citronella or vinegar. I think anything with ammonia in can have the opposite effect as it is a component of urine, but I’m not sure if that’s true. Dogs definitely pee over the top of other dogs urine smells so you need to break the habit.

ConfessionsOfAMumDramaQueen · 02/08/2026 13:52

Clean it best you can and put down a deterrent. I know people have used ground pepper, chilli powder, essentially oils. Just make sure it isn't actually toxic.

JustPlainStanfreyPock · 02/08/2026 13:56

We had this dogs peeing through metal gate thing, very annoying, also used dilute bleach to clean area thoroughly and sprinkled some crushed chillies into the crack between the step and pavement. No more weeing.

Although chillies not a great idea with your toddler, maybe something else strong smelling but harmless like peppermint oil would also work?

SurferRona · 02/08/2026 14:03

Dogs are peeing on top of other dogs pee (Peemail is a perfect description!) and if they are determined, chilli and other smells won’t stop them, they will still smell the other pee under that. Their smell is 20,000 better than ours don’t forget. Neither will Jeyes fluid tbh - which I would be worried more about toddler touching that.

You are best off focusing on stopping the wee hitting your path, re directing it. If your wrought iron gate is always closed put a board behind the bottom 18 inches, that will push it back onto the street.

RecycleMy · 02/08/2026 14:07

Clean it with a solution of biological washing powder - it contains an enzyme that breaks down the smell in the wee, so it may stop associating your gate with needing to wee.

At the end of the day though it is what dogs do and might be a difficult one to tackle effectively.

JennyChawleigh · 02/08/2026 14:13

Try this: https://worksthatwork.com/artefacts/anti-pee-paint - apparently the pee bounces back so might surprise the dog owner! They've used it successfully on garden walls near a local pub.

Anti-Pee Paint (Works That Work magazine)

An ultrahydrophobic paint to deter men from relieving themselves in public.

I get your frustration and annoyance with this. Maybe a sign would help? People can stop their dog from doing it - they may just be distracted and not paying attention. My dog isn’t allowed to pee on driveways, tyres, bus stops etc and he loves peemail 😂 so it’s perfectly possible.

What's a 'dognephew'?

But then you'll get entire toms spraying over it instead.

spiderlight · 02/08/2026 14:21

Bio washing powder or an enzyme -bssed spray like Simple Solution or UrineOff will help to discourage over-marking.

I assumed it was the dog of one of their siblings?

jeaux90 · 02/08/2026 14:32

Enzyme spray. Put a sign up and a Ring.

This. I mean I can work it out, but how ridiculous.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 02/08/2026 16:21

Yeah dont use bleach, lady down the road from us does (squirts it pure from the bottle) and not only does it reek in the heat, gets on shoes and dog's paws but is also a wee magnet.
Ndn (terrace house) has the problem that the corner of her house is pee central. Her grown engineer sons joke about rigging up a mild electrical shock activated by wee.

AzureLurker · 02/08/2026 19:27

Years ago I worked in a shop where a guy that lived in the flat above would let his dog pee all over the a-frame sign I would have to lift in and out and write on each day. And the doorstep. Only thing that worked was catching it happening and asking him not to let it happen.
