To almost feel a shred of sympathy for Tommy Robinson

He did a debate against Oxford university students recently.

His entire argument was destroyed. Every single point. Even Jacob Rees Mogg had to comment on how stupid he was.

It’s exposed what he really is - an ignorant, uneducated man who is so gripped by fear caused by a misunderstanding of the world around him, and it’s almost made me feel sorry for him. People like him have been failed - by society, by the education system, and by the people around them.

Can you share a clip of the panic when a picture was about the be revealed? Sounds interesting

People screamed "you can't do that" several ladies fainted, the Muslims in the room started foaming at the mouths etc.

None of that actually happened but it would have been cool if it did. In reality maybe a slight stir of interest? That always happens when someone interiors a speech to say "and now I'm going to do it, I'm going to do the thing" and he was brandishing his envelope with a flourish. Noone tried to stop him that I could see though.

Someone said that TR is a source, someone else said they already heard about the same thing via a different source so why is one source 'frightening' and one not?

Why is he a boogie man to so many people? It really is fascinating.

Because one source is Tommy Robinson and the other is THE NEWS.

Shedmistress · 02/08/2026 22:48

chocoluv · 02/08/2026 22:43

One source is a news outlet that provides facts, the other source is a criminal desperate for attention, manipulates vulnerable people for money and has been proven to have lied about things on multiple occasions.

Are you still confused?

Who is confused, I said 'fascinating'. Not confused.

But these facts as you call them, are the same facts?

Do you mean The BBC? The organisation littered with paedoes and dodgy as fuckers who hired a misinformation expert who lied on her CV?

Hugh Edwards used to read THE NEWS. Why is his news so true and TRs news so bad?

In the UK, divorce is a matter for civil courts. Religious groups can have their own beliefs about marriage, but the legal status of a marriage should not depend on which religion someone belongs to.

The legal status of a marriage depends on whether you are legally married though.
If you are legally married you can turn to laws around dissolving a marriage in the UK (division of assets etc)

If you are not legally married, either because you are cohabiting or because you had a religious ceremony that wasn't legally registered then UK law on divorce doesn't apply. Instead you have to decide how to end your relationship based on prior agreementa or, if you had a religious ceremony, by turning to a religious tribune"court". Those courts aren't legally binding though so it is possible for one party to go "nah not doing that".

If a Muslim is legally and religiously married then the law of the land on divorce supercedes religious law. If they are only religiously married then it doesn't apply. The same way if I cohabit with someone I'm not married to I can't claim anything as a common law wife under UK marriage law.

If that's the case, where do you get your information on current events?

Twitter?

Our modern laws dont allow those things that are in the bible that are akin to those acts though do they?

Our culture doesnt tolerate that

And Western Religion/ /Culture / Christianity has moved on adapting its doctrine - endorsing equal rights, family planning , trans acceptance, same sex relationships acceptable (even from those who do not wish for equal marriage rights) etc

Even my Muslim colleagues by and large admit this will never happen within Islam

When Huw Edwards read the news, the clue is in the name. He literally read it. So while he is a heinous individual, there's no reason to doubt the validity of what was written on his autocue.
SYL is also a heinous individual known to be of bad character and a liar.
When he tells us things, he isn't reading an autocue like Edwards, he's making them up, all by himself. And on many occasions they have been proven false.
Do you see the difference now?

Imanexcellentdrivercharliebabbit · 02/08/2026 23:13

Half my SILs family are Lutonian and TR has been banging on about the industrialised massive scale rape gangs in Luton and the Midlands for best part of the time I’ve known her - 14/15 years
he’s working class with a complex background agreed - but dues that mean his voice about all of that ( which later proved to be an absolute national disgrace ) is any less valid than anyone else’s?

Did anyone on this thread actually watch the whole thing - the 2+ hours available on the Oxford Union YouTube? It was actually pretty interesting and I don’t think anyone got ‘destroyed’ at all. I presume most people have only watched some edited clips.

I’m no fan of Robinson but some of the speakers on the other side quite embarrassed themselves. The whole thing was quite entertaining - good to see that free speech is still alive and well.

Some people must be hard of understanding.

I said the belief is similar. I didn’t account for every single person in either religious/ denomination. Obviously there’ll be a range of believes and reactions to what others do in each religion.

I’m just saying, it’s not that weird to be against images for gods, saints, prophets.

But yes some members of Protestant denominations are very extreme! As with all religions, there are extremists.

Oh behave

Give an example in recent times in the UK, where a teacher /professional, along with their family has been hounded with the threat of death into hiding (and still remains under protection ) by a Jew, an Anglican or a Catholic

Hugh Edwards used to read THE NEWS. Why is his news so true and TRs news so bad?

Do you think TR has some secret magical powers that he’s able to get hidden information that other news outlets can’t?

Why would you believe the word of one man (who has proven to be a liar on multiple occasions) over multiple news outlets?

I’m sure there are times when he does tell the truth.
But why would you risk looking stupid by believing everything he says, when you could just stick to facts.

Nervana Mahmoud

@Nervana_1
Doctor/independent political commentator on Islamism, MENA issues, and current affairs. Dear @UniofOxford,

As a British Muslim, I find this deeply embarrassing.

Refraining from violence is not an act of “generosity”—it is the bare minimum expected in a civilised society.

You don’t defend Islam—or any other belief—by suggesting that its supporters generously decided not to become a lynch mob.

The smug self-righteousness on display is astonishing. Instead of engaging with the issues, this speaker resorted to a sneering personal attack on
@TRobinsonNewEra
, achieving nothing except reinforcing
his argument in the eyes of his supporters.

Shame on you!

15 million have arrived in 30 years.

This isn't true - unless a huge no have died or left the country

The UK Muslim pop is approx 4.5 million ie 6% of 70 million

I’m struggling to see how it could be true.

Isn’t the population of the UK like 65million

But less than a quarter were not born here.

Perhaps your statistic is including people who worked here temporarily and then returned home.

Half of the population are not foreign born.

Huh?

I get that it feels wick when you find out knowledgeable people know more than you. And did productive stuff to get justice for the victims.

Before some of you realised it was a problem. Before TR came into your lives. Seriously? Not being mean, but have a wee think about that.

If you are relying on any one man to tell you the news, nevermind that drug addled, treasonous, skank, you need to have a word with yerself.🙈🙈

Limecar · 02/08/2026 23:53

These statements are correct?

Isn’t the population of the UK like 65million

But less than a quarter were not born here.

A quarter of 65 million is.16.25 million.

Perhaps your statistic is including people who worked here temporarily and then returned home.

Half of the population are not foreign born.

Half of 65 million is 32.5 million.

So what is nonsense and what is correct?
