To ask if you can tell that these are jeans?

I picked up these cream jeans from M&S. I love them, I think they’re perfect for autumn/winter. They’re deliciously soft, and so comfortable. But by looking at them can you tell they’re jeans?! I think they could pass for normal work trousers for work, which has a no jeans policy.

AIBU to think they look like normal trousers?!

What is the worst that can happen if you wear them to see what the reaction is? Your work rules sound weird.

Sparkletastic · 01/08/2026 16:38

Love them. Totally work appropriate unless you are e.g. a lawyer.

Well, true. It seems different departments have different takes on it too. I’ve seen plenty of flip flops lately!

They are not jean style.
pockets, loops etc.
so not jeans.
they may be white denim but not the style.

They do have belt loops

If the rule is no light blue denim, rather than no jeans of any colour, then you’ll be fine, surely?

I have a pair of floral jeans (pink) that I think would work for work- but I’m going to see what flies among other staff first as it’s a new job. As pp said, what is the worst that could happen if you style them smartly with shoes, maybe a collared shirt or a work blouse? In most places all they’ll say is ‘they’re too denim, wear something else tomorrow’. No?

Shinyandnew1 · 01/08/2026 17:05

That’s a funny rule, so you can wear dark blue or black jeans, but not light blue? I’d check with someone at work before buying them, unless you’re likely to wear them at home as well.

Yes, you can wear dark, smart denim.

They look smart to me and I would wear them to work

According to M&S they are!

Fair enough. They just don’t look anything like jeans to me.

Rumpledandcrumpled · 02/08/2026 12:41

I think I’d need to see the back and them on, but honestly m and s do such a great job of their website, eveything looks fab, and the quality is crap in real life, they look nothing like the image, a cheaper version of them

Agreed! I think you commented on my m and s sizing post the other day too so m and s dislike solidarity here 😆

First picture no, second picture yes.

I agree with this!

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 02/08/2026 12:51

I think I might have tried those on and wondered why there was a straight crease down jeans. I think ad they’re white and not light blue type jeans they should be ok. We used to have a no jeans policy and I got away with black skinnies

Cuppachuchu · 02/08/2026 12:56

They look lovely. Wear with ankle boots and a nice top. They won't look like jeans.

cloudtreecarpet · 02/08/2026 13:03

What's the worst that could happen? You will presumably simply be told not to wear them again?
You won't be sacked or shot at dawn I presume??
Most dress codes around jeans are to stop people wearing scruffy pale denim jeans with holes/rips in aren't they?
If the powers that be at your work have the time to be scrutinising a pair of trousers like this in great depth & make a fuss about it, maybe look for another job?

If you like them & will wear them out of work anyway, just keep them, wear them to work one day, appropriately styled, and see what happens.

Shittyyear2025 · 02/08/2026 13:17

My work policy is no denim but I've worn a 'tailored' denim jacket/blazer to work for years to all sorts of meetings/conferences etc and its never, ever been mentioned. There's denim and denim op, those certainly don't fit the bill of 'jeans' in my book.

This isn’t true at all

I just got some slightly flared ankle grazer jeans from M&S - in a cream colour. They are beautiful quality and far superior to my recent purchase of jeans from Whistles and Me and Em.
They were £50 and so not the cheap ones.
Their Autograph jeans are the same - great quality.
I am a size 10 in M&S, same in Reiss, Whistles, Me and Em, H&M, Hobbs etc.
They are now true to size, rather than coming up big.
