AIBU to have mentioned my friend’s odd behaviour?

I was sitting with a friend yesterday and we were talking about part time casual work I could do and I mentioned a few things and then said I’d thought about delivering for Amazon. She then slammed her spoon down on the table and said loudly “Don’t work for Amazon!” And she pulled the weirdest face and looked a bit like Pennywise. It really freaked me out as she appeared frozen in this position for around 10 seconds.

I was taken aback and just stared at her and when she started speaking again I said “what was that??” And she asked what I meant so I told her she acted really odd for a few seconds. She seemed a bit upset and now I feel really guilty. I didn’t mean to upset her but I can’t get that face out of my head.

WIBU to have mentioned it?

This made me laugh, sorry I suppose that is not the answer you are looking for. Has she looked like that before? It could just be a bit of a strange one off.

itsgettingweird · 01/08/2026 09:23

I had to google Pennywise.

Was NOT the image I was expecting 🤣

But now I can see why you were perplexed. Not only at the spoon banging but the expression with it.

As an aside Amazon delivery is a great side hustle and PT job for many. But just Pleeeeaaase read delivery instructions and actually deliver parcels to the right house or just any house. (As opposed to a street corner, garden or bin!)

Agix · 01/08/2026 09:25

You are totally overreacting. My mum does this. "Oh she had this LOOK on her face like she was possessed!" "she hugged me but squeezed me REALLY tight!" (that one shes gone on about for years).

Making mountain out of molehills of human behaviour. I can't say I know why, except either boredom on my mother's part and wanting to inject a bit of drama into things, or some personal issues she's projecting.

You're fine. Your friend made an expression. It's not a big deal.

Did you tell her she looked like pennywise?

Did you tell her she looked like pennywise?

No I told my husband when I got home but I didn’t say that to her

Do you mean you think she had a seizure? Has this happened before?

She should probably see GP

Blueseudeshoes · 01/08/2026 09:34

This has really made me laugh this morning and I needed it, i’m also concerned for you as it sounds like the start of a horror movie

Yoheresthestory · 01/08/2026 09:43

Something about it says you saw something happen that was more than just slightly off.

Do you think she had an absence seizure or something? 10 seconds frozen in strange face expression is rather long and I’m not surprised you feel somethings not normal.

I was thinking this. Tell her to go the drs. I hope she doesn drive.

Did she really look like Pennywise?

Yes she really did. She opened her eyes really wide and they kind of drifted apart and then she lowered her head and did a slow creepy smile with her front two teeth showing and stayed like that for about 10 seconds. I’ve never seen her do this before and her eyes don’t normally go like that

This past year she has been under a lot of stress, one thing after another so I am concerned something else was going on

I don’t think you were unreasonable, even if you didn’t suspect absence seizure it was a too strong reaction for the idea. If she had some arguments against Amazon ( and many do, it’s ok) she should have told them to you.
You could have asked her why she reacted this way rather than what But tbh I’m just clutching at straws here.

Zippidydoodah · 01/08/2026 09:54

Oh my god. If this really did happen the way you describe, it really sounds like an absence seizure. She would be upset after at you mentioning it, as she simply would have no recollection of the 10 seconds before.

can you tell her again that you want to work for Amazon and see what her reaction is? Then gently ask her if she could possibly be experiencing seizures of some kind?

this is really worrying!

BillieWiper · 01/08/2026 09:55

Does she have a very elastic, expressive face? I do, and I always pull silly faces. Like if I was trying to say don't do something, it would be a disaster, I might cross my eyes and pull a daft face to show in a silly way it was a bad idea.

Could it be that?

Like she pulled a creepy face because she thinks Amazon are evil? As a joke? Maybe when you didn't just laugh she got offended so pretended like she didn't know what she did?!

Boxjellyfish · 01/08/2026 09:56

I’m honestly not. Obviously she didn’t have clown make up and wild hair etc but just the eyes and mouth really resembled him and it seemed so out of context for what we were talking about. I’m wondering if she didn’t mean to slam the spoon so smiled to show she didn’t mean to appear aggressive?!
I really don’t know. She’s the most placid person ever so the spoon slam seemed out of character before anything else.

she also kept spilling her coffee by knocking into the table constantly which again she’s not normally like.

The resemblance to Pennywise may be a slight exaggeration but it’s the only thing I can think of to describe the face she pulled. It was the first character I thought of when she did it.

It sounds like a neurological issue or she's got a problem with Amazon losing her parcels.

She's your friend so only you know which is the most likely.

GaaNeen · 01/08/2026 10:00

Well, how strange ?
I think I would set up an experiment,
meet her again,
casually drop in the Amazon thing again
see what happens
report back here asap please !!

I feel that this has been extremely exaggerated.

Sometimes known as 'aiming for the classics section'.

CanSeeClearlyNowTheRainHasGone · 01/08/2026 10:04

Did you ask her why she said that, and why so forcefully?

Either she has some ethical reason or, more likely given the rictus face, it's bringing out some past trauma.

I feel that this has been extremely exaggerated.

It’s complacency like this that gets you possessed by Pennywise in Costa. Be careful.

When she started talking again she explained why and said she’d heard lots of awful things about them, impossible targets, very little pay etc

Aiming for classics?? Why on earth would this end up in classics? What an odd thing to say
