Kids chasing pigeons and ducks

Yet another day of seeing children chasing ducks with the parents doing fuck all to stop them. This was even worse in that the parents were both filming the two kids on their phones and obviously finding it funny and cute. Since when is terrifying animals funny? I see it regularly with pigeons and ducks and I'm so sick of it.

Aibu to think it's animal cruelty?

Cars and bicycles scatter pigeons. Whats the difference

One is accidentally for a few seconds because the pigeon is in the way in front of a fast moving car. The other is deliberate and often for quite some time as kids deliberately chase and scare a living creature. A huge difference.

I hate seeing this. I judge hard when I see parents just standing there allowing it. Just shitty parenting creating nasty kids really.

My children are loving and kind, actually, and also respectful of animals. But I did let them run once or twice at pigeons when they were toddlers. I think it’s ok.

Animals chase pigeons

Can you honestly not see the difference?

Traffic in a city is constant

It's not ok.

It isn't worth engaging. Like trying to reason with Trump.

Are ducks allowed to chase pigeons

One is still deliberate and the other isn't. Do you tend to lack empathy normally?

Parents should stop their children doing this -chasing animals - I have told off a few children for this in the parks - constantly chasing pigeons- pigeons need to conserve their energy and every time they are frightened they have to take off quickly which uses up their already depleted energy reserves - its their planet too!

I never had an issue with pigeon chasing

but duck chasing is not on

What?

It's not okay. It's unkind. Living creatures aren't children's toys.

Doesn’t bother me when it’s pigeons, I hate them and think they’re gross pooing everywhere. I’d tell a child to stop if it was bothering other humans eg making the birds fly at ppl eating in an outside restaurant

duck chasing i find so so, if it’s a little chase I wouldn’t mind, if it’s charging at them repeatedly whilst waving a stick for half n hour I’d tell the child to stop. Normally a child does it once or twice then moves on though, which I think is fair enough and not cruel.

in general I think children should come before animals though, it really annoys me when people put animals before children. This no doubt affects my response to your question!

You can still put children before animals without allowing them to scare animals. They can easily get their amusment elsewhere.

100% and we'll put. Animals are not toys.

My kids are also loving and kind and have never been allowed to purposefully scare animals for their entertainment. I think it’s piss-poor parenting but you do you. It’s not my kids who will end up being horrid little shits at the end of the day.

SpaceRaccoon · 26/07/2026 19:28

My DH always tells off children when he sees them chasing pigeons.

Pigeons are vermin. I've never seen them 'terrified' whilst being chased; they go back to the exact spot they were chased from. Again and again.

Read up on it. It's because they have to conserve energy.

Children's unimportant wants to pester and frighten animals, definitely do not come before the needs of animals to be safe and live their lives in peace.

Weekendnaughtiness · 26/07/2026 19:32

You’d have been appalled by me as a child. I must have stamped on thousands of ants!

I can't stand it when people call pigeons vermin! They are marvellous intelligent birds. They used to be our companions, our messengers. Now they are discarded and branded vermin! For shame!
