To not understand why anyone would buy these for a child (tech related)

I don’t understand why anyone would get their child an iPad or tablet. Especially under ten and while a toddler even!

I know this sounds like I think I’m superior having not done it, but however I asked the question it would have come across like that. I’m far from a perfect parent and rely on the tv far too much for childcare when I’m making dinner or need to drink my tea in peace.

But iPads and tablets I don’t get, they’re so interactive and addictive. I genuinely can’t understand why you’d get one for a child. Especially when there’s tv that is more passive (though I accept not good either!).

I can’t remember when the iPad got bought and why. I think it was bought for an adult initially and then my eldest started using it. We did hold off getting phones until the age of 11.

OP I agree these things can be a menace. My kids are only allowed theirs occasionally, like in the holidays as their behaviour is terrible when they use them too much. They are never allowed to use them at meal times and there are limits on daily usage, lots of parental controls etc. The reason we got them originally was for holidays where we don't have TV or their usual programs and we occasionally want some downtime. I find them a useful tool on journeys too - kids behave themselves, I can read my book, and they are always told that there's no iPad if there's messing about before we get on the flight.
