Kier and Kemi showed the best of British politics today

I do miss the days that every political interaction was like that. We’ve become so nasty in politics these days, it’s nice to see some mutual respect again.

Yes it came across very warm. I don’t understand the hate for Starmer. I hope it’s a great relief for him to step down. Kemi came across really well and yes we saw her more as a person than a politician which is good

I agree. Kemi has gone up in my estimation

personally id like her as pm and give it a crack, yes they are all in one way or another restricted by deals , alliances, the bigger picture etc but overall would be intresting

PeonyBulb · Today 00:58

Being Prime Minister is a shit job but worth it for the annual wage once they’ve left. That’s about the only good thing about it. They all get vilified by the press no matter what. It’s a thankless task

i dont thnk any of them do it for the £, they already have billionair friends etc, its at a guess more about power, influence, control etc especially on the world stage influencing events shaping global politics, being more in the know about different projects than the average joe public and so on

Well yes you’re right but we all know that.

I loved the fact he acknowledged she has offered support privately on some occasions. It's good to hear the animosity of PMQs can be put aside for human decency

I liked that as well.

JasmineMac · Today 05:54

The assertion that you get the government you deserve is entirely astute.

Both these parties have failed the electorate on every conceivable level. Both led by weak and entirely ineffectual leaders.

'The best of British politics'. Honestly 🤦‍♀️

Twiglets1 · Today 06:52

It made me realise a lot of the horrible words they say to each other at PMQs is just theatre - I thought they really did hate each other!

I liked to see the more humorous, human side to Starmer, Badenoch and others.

Pedallleur · Today 06:54

Agreed. It’s quite distasteful, hounding people out for spurious reasons and then acting like you’re their friend or that you will miss them.

That's politics. Probably buying each other drinks in the Commons bar.

REP22 · Yesterday 20:11

I agree @thefireinyourheart - it was good to see. A fine example of how decent politicians should behave. That orange w~nk-goblin currently polluting the White House could learn much from it.

So could reform!

How so? Because they don’t bow to the demands of Farage?

I agree that there were some lovely moments today, but I find the suggestion that politics was always like that pre-Brexit extremely odd!

Yes when I was doing A Level politics 100 years ago, we would spend half a lesson watching PMQ's between Thatcher and Kinnock. That was not remotely polite!

That sounds like a great A level class ... think I should have picked Politics A level! Agree with your point that politics was always full of arguments.

I think she did well shaming the Labour MPs when she said Starmer had pulled off a landslide victory from disaster, and that none of the 400 Labour MPs could beat him in a leadership contest, they had to bring someone in from outside. Good for her!

I remember it well! We were mesmerised by it! It's frankly been my most useful A Level too, even 35 years later!

I'll just pretend this is well observed/acerbic wit, supporting my point on how stupidly easy it is for these piss poor leaders to deflect from their own failings.

Immigration is down. Minimum wage is up. NHS waiting lists down. All in two years.

I nearly fainted seeing Kemi being nice! She’s usually such a cold, sarky bitch. It was weirdly heartening.

I actually think she's lovely with a great sense of humour.

Dweetfidilove · Today 07:16

It was lovely to see, yes 😊.

HRTQueen · Today 07:34

I agree op respectfully acknowledging each other politics is a nasty business but not all politicians are nasty and self serving I don’t think KS or KB are they are dedicated politicians

I think in time many more people will appreciate what Starmer has gone for the Labour Party more than anything, Under his leadership the party became a respectable party again and he has led the way for Burham to have a much easier time managing the party which has always been an issue for Labour

PrizedPickledPopcorn · Today 07:37

I think we seriously need politics to demonstrate that it’s about systems, not people. At the moment, too many think it’s ok to despise people who vote differently from them. It’s extremely short sighted and doesn’t recognise the complexity behind people’s choices.

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · Today 07:53

Politics was nicer in the past? Pre-Brexit? Bollocks.

Some people will shoehorn Brexit into anything. It’s the same as it’s ever been.

Starmer and Badenoch tore lumps out of each other for two years because that’s how politics works. It works like that here and everywhere else.

But they are all humans and have emotions and private lives.

Binnyforthewin · Today 07:58

It's all so disingenuous. The Labour MPs clapping him after kicking him out. Kemi pretending she isn't delighted he is going.

I had hoped that the Lawyer in Starmer would have moved PMQs to opposite ask a question and then a well reasoned answer to the answer. But all we got was 2 years of "....14 years of tory rule ,,,,,, I'll take no lectures from ..... breakfast clubs". Who knows Burnham might come in and completely stump Kemi with a full and frank answer to her questions.

randomchap · Today 08:00

It's Keir

He's been PM for a couple of years and still some people can't spell his name.

Raccoonsmacaroons · Today 08:02

I think both Keir and Kemi have more substance about them than most of their parties put together.

Ah well, let’s see how the local Mayor fares at running the country next.
