People looking round our hotel room?

Staying in a lovely 5* hotel for 2 nights. Total treat, it's lovely.

Yesterday we went out for the day. Came back around 3pm and there were hotel staff in our room showing people around. They wanted to book the place for a wedding. They were right in the room, the woman was in the bathroom looking around. The man had opened the wardrobe.

I asked them immediately to leave and they did but they took their time about it, actually standing by the door commenting on how the room was a bit small. I nearly had to push them out and close the door.

We spoke to the reception staff later and they said it's common to let people look around occupied hotel rooms.

Really? Is this common? Right in the room opening wardrobes, not just putting their heads round the door for a quick look?

We got offered a free drink to compensate.

It's still bugging me this morning. I want to go to reception and make clear to them that no-one is to go in our room. Dh says I'm making a fuss. Cleaners go in there every day so this is no different.

I'm interested to hear if this is indeed normal and I'm over-reacting by being bothered by it?

I'll be wondering all day if someone is looking round our bedroom.

I'd want more than a drink as compensation

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · Today 09:49

That’s out of order and I’d be annoyed. Surely they have one room free?

firstofallimadelight · Today 09:50

Totally not normal. I’d be annoyed.

MissMoneyFairy · Today 09:51

If its only a 2 night stay and you don't want an upgrade I'd ask for a full refund, is this in the UK?

ChaToilLeam · Today 09:51

It's an invasion of privacy and also leaves you open to a risk of theft.

No way is it normal practice. I'd hit the bloody roof.

professionalcommentreader · Today 09:53

That’s bonkers, you are hiring a private space not public.

Calliopespa · Today 09:53

It isn't standard: they thought they'd get away with it because you'd gone out.

I have often asked to see other room set-ups at hotels we return to (so I know what to book next time) and they ALWAYS check for a time when the room will be being prepared for new guests and offer for us to have a quick peep while the room is unoccupied between bookings.

Calliopespa · Today 09:54

I'd actually ask for a reduction on the room. You pay for exclusive use, not sharing it with the general public.

Randomchat · Today 09:54

Okay, you've all made me feel like I'm not overreacting. Thank you.

I've spoken to a different manager on my way up from breakfast who looked horrified that this has happened. Promised me it's not standard and has promised that he'll investigate and speak to us when we get back. Has assured us that no-one will be in our room today.

So we're going to get ready to go out and enjoy our day.

I know I sound pathetic but we never go to fancy hotels. I have no idea what's normal.

I'm not going to name anything right now. I'll see what happens. I'll report back later.

Thank you for your support. I'm a wimp who usually stays in Premier Inns

Wtf 😮I have never heard of this happening to anyone I know. I would be right pissed off.
Email, hq

I'd be furious and I've never ever heard of this before. Talk to the manager and leave a factual review on trip advisor to warn others. I never want to stay at that hotel. Yanbu and I'm shocked it happened. Risk of theft to say nothing of invasion of privacy by random people walking off the street not a staff member. This opens the hotel up hugh risks.

Wenttoaweddingonamonday · Today 09:42

😂 this is so MN. What exactly do you think the OPs “insurer” is going to do, that’s if she is actually covered for a UK break.

They would talk to the hotel- they don't like being open to unknown risks, showing people around occupied rooms is not normal, whatever the hotel says. Anyone with any sense who goes on breaks has annual travel insurance.

ILoveLeopard245 · Today 09:56

Wow - I would feel really cross about this. Not OK at all in my view.

Clara27 · Today 09:58

They said it’s standard practice? No no no! What if you were in your room, would you have received a call or would they have knocked on your door with the couple in tow, or worse, just let themselves in while you were there enjoying the supposed privacy of your room. If it’s standard practice, you would have been informed of the possibility in advance, and then consulted before it actually happened. I’ll bet they thought you’d never know. Definitely escalate it

Namechangefordaughterevasion · Today 09:59

This is shocking. I'm glad you have complained again.

We were away last week and when we weren't in the room we'd leave our iPads in there charging. We felt secure doing that because no staff member would be likely to risk their job by nicking something with a low resale value. OTOH, it would only take a second for an opportunistic stranger to unplug one and slip it in their bag.

MajorProcrastination · Today 10:00

This is gross, it's an invasion of privacy and a huge security no no.

For a 5* that's outrageous too. Not normal.

purplecorkheart · Today 10:01

I would be furious and this is certainly not standard practice. I would demand on seeing the manager of the hotel and ideally the owner. If the hotel is part of a chain I would be going to head office.

ThriveAT · Today 10:02

This is a gross breach of your privacy and security. I would be fuming.

MyDeftDuck · Today 10:02

Oh, so DH says you’re making a fuss! would he feel the same if he was having a nap, you were having sex, ??? Who the fuck allows potential clients to view an occupied hotel room?? Complain to management and keep complaining until you get adequate compensation!

Wishimaywishimight · Today 10:03

didntlikeanyofthesuggestions · Today 09:16

Seems reasonable enough to me. No way I'd get married somewhere without checking what's in the wardrobe. What if it leads to Narnia and half your guests disappear?

You make an excellent point 😂

BMW58 · Today 10:05

I think the manager who allowed this is going to be looking for another job shortly.......

BeKhakiReader · Today 10:06

Glad you’ve spoken to someone with more sense. I’d have absolutely hit the roof. What if you’d left personal things lying around. Absolutely shocking.

Gardenisablooming · Today 10:08

When you get home make sure you leave a very factual review....

Anonyanonay · Today 10:09

Security risk. Leave a pissy online review. They'll be falling over themselves to compensate you for it if they have any sense.

Another76543 · Today 10:10

Absolutely not acceptable. I’d be making a proper complaint and also flagging it on a Trip Advisor review.
