Would you expect to see a People’s Friend annual 1998 in an expensive holiday home?

As per the title, DD2 and I are staying in an expensive holiday home on the coast in North Yorkshire. The bookshelf is the tiredest and saddest I have ever seen. There is actually a People’s Friend annual from 1998. The weather has been glorious and we have been on the Blue Flag beach for hours every day so we have not had to open the really tired and dated jigsaws. Thankfully. Would I be unreasonable to point out to the hosting company that a little bit of investment and a little bit of respect for paying holidaymakers would not go amiss?

I like to leave feminist books on the shelves of holiday cottages. I think I’ll dump my copy of Trans by Helen Joyce when I’m in Cornwall next week.

Oh, watch out, you’ll be accused of being up yourself.

And who is David Dickinson?

The GOAT when it comes to being orange.

Why are there three stories about The Farmer and his Wife? Have they cheated and reprinted the same story three times? Or maybe the farmer has remarried a couple of times and had three wives?

Oh, don’t confuse me now. I’ve had a couple of glasses of wine. Because holiday. Bloody good job there isn’t a copy of The Iliad on the bookcase.

I'd love to have a read, its a vintage copy. Ive never read People's Friend but my Mum used to and i think it wouldbe something different and quite enjoyable. Also I would already have my books/magazines of choice with me on holiday. Ive never been lucky enough to stay somewhere 'expensive' so I'm not sure if they are supposed to supply up to date entertainment but maybe they figured that as everyone has the interweb on their phones you'd be using that.

That sounds fabulous. I would love to find things like that. What a treat !

MrsApplepants · 11/07/2026 21:43

A couple years ago I found a Cosmopolitan magazine from 1993 amongst a load of crap in our shitty rented holiday apartment in Majorca. It was complete with perfume sample strips that still smelled, inc my beloved, long discontinued Tendre poison. It came home with me, no way I was leaving that piece of 90s treasure.

WTF? We stay at a gorgeous (moderately expensive) Airbnb in France that has a book shelf / magazine rack with some ancient tomes on it, I think it adds to the charm and a nod to how long people have been enjoying the place. I left a recent copy of Good Housekeeping last time we were there, I look forward to flicking through it again in 10 years time.

This made me smile. We stay in the same lovely private villa in Greece for a week every year (very expensive 😉). First year we went just after lockdown I bought a Magazine at the airport and left it in the villa - it’s been there every trip since and I’ll be disappointed if it’s not there in September!

The People's Friend is awesome and what the Hallmark channel can only dream of being. Sadly its prime demographic are now dying and/or unable to read so its days are surely numbered.

Wow that's a bit harsh ! Its been in print and awful long time and I think their demographic has always been the same so not sure why you think they are all dieing now 🙄

Used to buy my Mum the Peoples Friend annual and the double edition Christmas magazine. Haven’t done that for 12 years

Having just returned from a holiday cottage with a similar shelf of ancient paperbacks, I'd guess there was also something by Joanna Trollope, Rosamond Pilcher, Catherine Cookson, a copy of Call the Midwife, and a few old spy novels.

I always associate The People's Friend with my MIL (of fond memory), who used to pass on her copies to me in the 80s/90s. It's owned by a Scottish company and a lot of the stories are set in Scotland.

I'm 47 and buy it. Hope I'm not quite on my way out yet😂

It has some very nice knitting and crochet patterns.

I’m happy to screenshot the contents and a few stories for you.

you could always add some nexus books or nancy friday ones to the bookcase, that would make some intriguing reading

Whynottryagain · 11/07/2026 22:17

I'd enjoy it. But I have an annual collection (not of People's Friend) going all the way back to the 60s.

I don't think most people have high expectations of books available at a holiday let?! Unless I was on a specialist subject holiday like birdwatching or history and expecting books on that subject, or the local area, I'd just take my own book!

Friendlygingercat · 11/07/2026 22:27

Who goes on holiday to read books?

Wadsworthy · 11/07/2026 22:31

YABU

But I suppose you can't afford to buy your own books.

Single parents of young children who spend all day on the beach but who can’t legally leave said children alone at night to hit the town. Those sort of people. Also, probably people whose favourite escapism from real life is to read books.

Your annual collection sounds interesting. Also, not anyone here has recommended taking one’s own books; thanks so much for the tip.

Without wishing to be disrespectful, you and I have different ideas of fun. Although, I have been accused on here of being a saddo with no life (paraphrasing). So you may be right.
