Would you expect to see a People’s Friend annual 1998 in an expensive holiday home?

As per the title, DD2 and I are staying in an expensive holiday home on the coast in North Yorkshire. The bookshelf is the tiredest and saddest I have ever seen. There is actually a People’s Friend annual from 1998. The weather has been glorious and we have been on the Blue Flag beach for hours every day so we have not had to open the really tired and dated jigsaws. Thankfully. Would I be unreasonable to point out to the hosting company that a little bit of investment and a little bit of respect for paying holidaymakers would not go amiss?

I'd read it. I love random books in holiday accommodation. If I was a bit up myself I'd take my own books though.

Curious as to why it is up yourself to take your own books. I take my own book because I'm usually reading it before I go so take it to carry on if I fancy reading.

I love reading Readers Digests, old and new, but People's Friend is pushing it . 1998, that’s almost 30 years old, so the people who it was intended for are probably dead now! I’d probably look at it out of curiosity, after brushing the dust of.

Would you say that though if they had a copy of the first Harry Potter.
Published a year before in 1997.
Or.....ten gazillion other books that are more than 30 years old 😁

For those who have no idea what The People’s Friend is.

I’m invested in Sharon’s story.

YANBU OP. Is there a Da Vinci code too?

If there was a first edition of Harry Potter, I would definitely be secreting that in my luggage.

Let me check and get back to you.

I’m exhausted after a full day at the beach so I’M tempted to draft a whole inventory here later on.

A decent selection of books is always a nice bonus, but then you've suggested that this should include cookery books? I'd rather read People's Friend annuals than cookery books on whilst on holiday.
I think the supplying of books for holiday-makers is becoming a thing of the past, sadly. Back in the day there would always be trashy novels on the bookshelves. I would never have read Jackie Collins, Sidney Sheldon, Sven Hassell, Dick Francis or Barbara Cartland had they not been on offer in holiday homes, let alone Flowers in the Attic! These days it's a decade's collection of Antiques and Country Homes magazines, and a couple of Arthouse glossies.

The cottage we go to every year has a heap of lovely cookery books. I love leading through imagining making the recipes. I never actually have - that would involve far too much effort.

I saw a job advertised last year to be the bookshelf curator for the Landmark Trust properties in Scotland. You got to choose books for each property and then go and refresh as needed. Books on local history, local authors etc. Tbf they dont have WiFi so books are necessary.
Maybe someone needs to set up a business doing this for other upmarket holiday homes. And count the jigsaw pieces. Though I have spent many holiday in self catering places where we make up our own rules to fit a boardgame with no instructions and too few pieces. It's fun.

I’d be delighted, my grandma was a subscriber and I’d read her copies every Sunday. I’d have a happy half hour slipping through.

That would be my dream job.

Because you get to read a 1992 The People’s Friend annual instead, silly!

(Don’t tell that poster that I brought FOUR of my own books with me. Thank God/god.)

Sneak some books in for the next people with a little note op, it may start a lovely trend!! I’m going to recommend a Faith Hogan and Lucinda Riley

MidnightPatrol · 11/07/2026 19:36

Oh I love a bookshelf full of mad and eccentric things to read.

My step grandmother (Irish) used to read the People’s Friend religiously every week. It was part of her life, an escape with a cup of tea and slice of her homemade cake. Sometimes I’d read it too. It’s got to be doing something right if it’s still produced.

I understand your feeling that The Peoples’ Friend didn’t really reflect ambience of the accommodation, but I would just tuck it out of sight and forget about it.

My step grandmother had the People’s Friend and my nana had the Readers Digest which she’d often give to us. We had the Readers Digest at our doctors surgery too.

Here’s another piece of nostalgia for those who treasure their family memories of The People’s Friend.

I actually thought I would write a negative review of the property, entirely based on my discovery of a 1992 edition of The People’s Friend annual.

I had to do a double take to make sure that was not Jill Dando on the cover.
