To ask what scares you /freaks you out that you would not consider common? Mine is a children’s book!

My 3 year old is obsessed with “We’re Going On A Bear Hunt” after having it read to her at preschool, she knows all of the words and we bought it as one of her gifts for her birthday.

We read a book every night at bed, whenever she reaches for this it gives me such bad goosebumps!

I don’t know if it’s the way it’s written, the pictures, I genuinely feel panic when they’re trying to get away from the bear and he’s in the background of the pictures and then at their front door and they’ve forgotten to lock it. I absolutely detest it 🥴 it gives me the right creeps!

This is baring in mind that all I read myself is psychological thrillers and I’ve watched so much true crime I could probably commit the perfect murder 😂 why do I have such a panicky/spooked response to a children’s book fgs!

The episode of the Simpsons where they think Mr Burns is an alien. I’m 35 now and still can’t watch it without hiding behind my hands 😂

I can't watch, "The Elephant Man" film. So sad. So horrible.

Murfmeister · Yesterday 21:25

Remembered another one 'The Enchanted Castle'. Scared the crap out of me when the dummies started clapping at the end of the play.

Cackling at some of these, I’m so glad to know I’m not alone!

Also, sharks but I’m obsessed with them. Like I love them, the fiercer the better (great whites/bull sharks/tiger sharks etc) and I will watch anything to do with a shark attack but open water is not my thing! I’ve been fascinated by them since I was very young. Top of my bucket list is to do a shark cage dive with great whites but I’m not convinced I’d actually do it, when they show close ups of great whites when they breach the water with their jaws open and teeth out it makes me feel sick but I just love them. It’s really bizarre.

Spent a lot of time in Florida growing up as my Aunt and Uncle are out there and I’d never swim in the pool alone especially at night as I’d imagine a shark in there with me!

Don’t they have alligators visiting peoples swimming pools over there?

I couldn’t cope with the thought of them just “popping by” to use your pool😱

I don't like Bearhunt, there's a feeling of menace to it. And I dont know how Michael Rosen is down as an author, im sure we 'sang' it when I was in Brownies. I hated hearing Peter and the Wolf music and Puff the magic dragon

In my DD’s book it says “retold by Michael Rosen” or something along those lines

I don’t remember this but I believe I was aged 4 or thereabouts and we were on a family trip to the botanic gardens. I absolutely lost my shit when we went into the room with the giant cacti. Sobbing, shaking, refusing to walk any further. My parents apparently found it hilarious which I don’t think helped calm me down. No issue with giant cacti now and honestly not quite sure what my issue was then!

I get freaked out if ever I boil some penne and they end up all stood standing upright around the pan when I go to drain. I find it really eerie.

Puff the Magic Dragon used to upset me when I was little. Really sad.

Pylons. Hate them. I love modern and industrial structures and architecture but pylons are creepy. They have arms and legs.

Wildebeest. Weird AF. So top heavy they look like they should topple over. And are they deer or cows? Horrible things.

Also freaked out by chimpanzees and hippos 🤮

Another pylon-phobe. Yuck!

Also very tall isolated structures give me the creeps. E.g. Statues/columns.

Cruise ships are too big.

Large clouds.

Hot air balloons.

Wind socks.

Very deep water.

Lancaster Butterfly House. A real panic attack aged 13. Terrible school trip.

Kalanthe · Yesterday 21:29

Mine is actually funny. I'm not scared of spiders, mice, heights etc. Had a pet tarantula as a teenager.

What freaks me out is the face of the Statue of Liberty 😂😂 I can't look at it without feeling very uneasy

Devilsmommy · Yesterday 21:31

I always get creeped out by the people who walk around fairs and stuff on stilts. Don't know why but it just raises the hackles every time. My cousin used to be terrified of the scotch VHS tape skeleton 😂

Yes! Funnily enough, that never bothered me as it was drummed in to me to check pool as they did have an incident when they lived on a lake of one getting in to their neighbours pool.

They then moved to a house that backed on to one of the waterways (sea water) and their kids were told under no circumstances were they allowed to swim off their dock (they have a boat) due to seeing bull sharks/dolphins etc in their regularly.

Sideshow Bob from the Simpsons. Shudder.

elm26 · Yesterday 21:34

Also hate clowns, I was 6 and went to circus and queued up for a pony ride. My Dad went to lift me on but one of the clowns picked me up to put me on it and shouted boo in my face, I burst into tears and I’ve hated them since.

This is probably very outing but I'm terrified of those long plastic wibbly strands that some fidget type toys are made of. I can't even find a picture to show you sorry, because they make me panic.

Do you mean the 3D printing plastic?

The bear just follows them; it doesn't chase them. It reaches their house and they slam the door in its face.

In the last picture, we see the bear, hunched over, plodding back to its cave.

I don't think it's a scary bear; it's a sad bear that wanted to make friends.

I can't even listen to that as an adult without blubbing!

Also, and this is really specific, people talking about stair cases going down, like on a relaxation or hypnosis track. I'm lying there getting nice and relaxed then they start with the 'imagine you're going down a staircase' - urgh no thanks, sounds creepy, where is it thing, to the creepy basement?! What's in the basement? ! Shudder

I'm with you on the underwater machinery. As a child we used to go to a swimming pool with a wave machine, the memory of the black gaping void at the deep end where the machinery was with the bars in front of it still makes me feel a bit ill. I went snorkelling many years later and the sight and clanking sound of a big chain underwater provoked a very similar feeling.

Aargh me too. I used to think they kept sharks behind the bars. In hindsight it must have been the wave machine equipment but the actual FEAR every time I got near that far back wall...

I am scared of a particular kind of cake. It's a specific, usually pre-packaged cake, along the lines of jam tarts. I am get panicky almost to the point of tears if I see one. No idea why.

I know two people who are terrified of peas.

Fondant fancy?

I have a thing about noses, not my own other people's, especially strangers. If anyone blows their nose, sniffs or anything nose related it makes me feel sick. Nose bleeds I would have to get anyway from very fast!
