To ask what scares you /freaks you out that you would not consider common? Mine is a children’s book!

My 3 year old is obsessed with “We’re Going On A Bear Hunt” after having it read to her at preschool, she knows all of the words and we bought it as one of her gifts for her birthday.

We read a book every night at bed, whenever she reaches for this it gives me such bad goosebumps!

I don’t know if it’s the way it’s written, the pictures, I genuinely feel panic when they’re trying to get away from the bear and he’s in the background of the pictures and then at their front door and they’ve forgotten to lock it. I absolutely detest it 🥴 it gives me the right creeps!

This is baring in mind that all I read myself is psychological thrillers and I’ve watched so much true crime I could probably commit the perfect murder 😂 why do I have such a panicky/spooked response to a children’s book fgs!

I’m still scared stiff of the child catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Oh I'm also revolted by facial reconstructions of ancient hominids. Australopithecus and those.

La Sagrada Família. I’m sure to some it’s very beautiful but years ago I was in Barcelona and it was night time and the first glimpse I had of it was a bit of it at the end of a twisty dark street and it looked like something from actual hell (or a really bad acid trip). I had a total panic attack and couldn’t explain why. Boyfriend at the time was totally baffled.

I am petrified of the painting in ghost busters 2!! Like literally makes me cry! I can’t watch it and my kids love it

PyongyangKipperbang · Yesterday 20:51

When I was a kid there werensome programmes I loved. So when they became available on DVD I bought Chorlton and the Wheelies and Wurzel Gummidge.

Fuck me they were creepy! How the hell that was considered ok for kids is beyond me! Chorlton and Wheelies was worse somehow, despite being animation! They are giving me the shivers just thinking about them! No wonder my generation all drink too much, we need it to get over the trauma of 70's kids TV!

I was terrified as a child of those high level cistern toilets, especially if they were black 😱I’m still not great with them, although thankfully you see them much less these days. I used to have to flush and run (or not even flush at all sometimes if no one else was around)

That freaked me out too.

I doubt I’ll be alone in this one but I was terrified by the prank Halloween show the BBC did in the 90s, Ghostwatch.
I don’t think it was normal fear though, it genuinely scared the shit out of me for years and years… I’d dream about it and was scared of the cupboard under the stairs well into my teens.

Don't ever watch The Children of the Stones. Absolute nightmare fodder.
Very large things in very deep water, like the Titanic, make me shudder.

Yes to The Owl Service book! Then they televised it! No thank you
Pylons - shudder
Cattle grids

Also I find Wallace and grommit really eerie and can’t watch any of it.

Me too! My husband thinks it's hilarious. I'm also freaked out by any animated Winnie the Pooh shows. 🫣

Saltysweetspicy · Yesterday 20:59

There is a demon in my bedroom. Every so often I have to sage the room.

ProperGandering · Yesterday 20:59

Also, Starry Night by Van Gogh. I hate how popular it is because every time I see it I can hear the sky screaming.

I was about to say you’d mixed up The Owl Service with The Changes. But then I realised the pylons were unconnected with the former.

Another vote for Bagpuss, creepy as hell - the frog and ragdoll, singing mice and do not ever show me the episode with the earless elephant 😱

ignore me just realised it was stuff you were not meant to be scared of!

DaveWatts · Yesterday 21:02

Photos of space - like planets and galaxies. Totally give me the shudders. I didn’t have it as a child though, I think the trigger might have been from about 15 years ago and being out in the mountains in Central Asia at night, I’ve never seen stars so clear and close looking. It was like actually being in space, I was so scared I had to run back under cover.

LifesabagofRevels · Yesterday 21:03

Sinkholes.

i was also very wary of Bungle from Rainbow.

Dubulon · Yesterday 21:04

I read Bear Hunt for the first time this week. The bear chases the family through that final sequence upright like a person in a costume... It is odd! I stopped and stared at it for a bit until my DS nudged me to carry on 😅

My thing is the film Arachnophobia. Everyone I know takes the mick out of me for being terrified of that "comedy" film. Comedy my arse

Planesmistakenforstars · Yesterday 21:04

I am scared of a particular kind of cake. It's a specific, usually pre-packaged cake, along the lines of jam tarts. I am get panicky almost to the point of tears if I see one. No idea why.

I know two people who are terrified of peas.

myheadsjustmush · Yesterday 21:09

Ragety in Rupert Bear really used to frighten me when I was little too. I remember cowering behind a chair, crying hysterically!

As an adult, cellars and basements really freak me out. Just the sight of a door leading to a cellar makes me want to have a panic attack.
