Dieting is horrendous

Just looking for sympathy really.

I’ve a bmi of 28. I need to lose a lot of weight. For the last two weeks I’ve been good but MY GOD the hunger and sheer depressing nature of it all. My BMR is only 1600. Sticking to 1000 or less is so hard.

My husband, on the other hand, seems to have no hunger and amazing self control. Last night he ate a single sweet potato and declared that as his dinner. His BMR is 2700. I can see him visibly changing before my eyes.

I guess I’m just jealous.

Cheese is full of fat, both good and bad fats. Try substituting it.

Sod that. It adds satiety to the food and keeps you fuller longer. I'd ditch the rice cakes and have oatcakes instead.

AlbieJiggered · 09/07/2026 16:22

'Dieting' is crap. Makes you think about nothing but food.

I have no idea how many calories I eat in a day. I eat what I like when I like
I don't like large evening meals and I love veg and salad. Not keen on carbs. Can take or leave cakes and biscuits.
I exercise regularly.

What will make me put on weight is eating too much and of the wrong food, not moving much. Large evening meals like eating out, eating takeaways or mindless grazing while watching tv.

FWIW I look fat if I weigh more than about 18 lbs below the top of the BMI normal range.

Wickedlittledancer · 09/07/2026 16:16

BMI is a height and weight calculation, so a bmi of 25 on a 5ft woman will be a much lower weight than a bmi of 25 on a 6ft woman, so no one looks fatter or thinner due to height, as height is already taken into account.

its body composition, we all carry weight differently, we all have different muscle masses and we also all have different bodies and skeletons. For example take two women the same height and one can have much longer legs and shorter torso than the other. Some are pear shaped, some apple. BMI isn’t associated with appearance, it is purely what is healthy for that height of person. Someone with a. Lot of muscle will be towards the upper end of a healthy bmi, someone with little muscle will be healthier at the lower end.

its certainly a common misconception thrown around on mumsnet constantly then

It's shite. My BMI is 31 - obese. I'm 5'7, 88kg (I don't weigh myself very often, I count calories and exercise every day and just crack on), and wear UK size 10 to 12.

I have more weight to lose. But not nearly as much as the amount I'd need to get into a healthy BMI zone. You can already see all my ribs, my chest and shoulders are actually a bit grim they're so bony. Thighs and tummy - yes, weight to lose. But even on my most self-loathing days, I KNOW I am not obese.

BMI is total horseshit for me.

Edited

You ARE obese
The definition of obese is BMI over 30 so it's total nonsense to say you aren't. How big is your waist? You'll be at risk of health complications because of the excess fat on your mid section no matter how bony your shoulders look 🙄

AlbieJiggered · 09/07/2026 16:34

mnareshatrantee · 09/07/2026 16:24

Plus protein!

It was in reference to
"Yesterday I had 3 scrambled eggs with a bit of cheese and veg for lunch = 500 cals. Then for dinner 4 rice cakes with cheese, salad and crab sticks = 500 cals."

There's plenty of protein there but not a lot of fat. The cheese, if only a little bit, will perk up the food so that it is more enjoyable and satiating.

There was no need for your snide “the people who think it’s shite “ comment . Come on now . You know exactly what you were at

Seriously your sensitivity has you jumping at shadows. Generally people don’t like bmi when they don’t like what it says, and I stand by that, my hairdresser has a bmi of 17, her view is it’s shite and she’s not underweight. I know as she was royally pissed off gp said she was.

is she underweight, yes of course, so it’s not healthy, but she looks fine. Great in fact. BMI is not about appearance or dress size, it’s a corridor to indicate health impacts, no more no less. And the further you stream away from the healthy corridor the more unhealthy it is.

now clearly there are some outliers. Before anyone starts shouting about body builders and rugby players. But for most of us, it’s a good indication if we are in that healthy bmi corridor, which is a good couple of stone or so for most. Our weight isn’t having a negative impact on our health.

purpleme12 · 09/07/2026 16:36

How do you do it when you don't feel actually hungry, but you've got quite literally no energy and weak?

Is she’s a size ten in a fixed waist band then she’s not carrying it on her tummy.

Nobody with a BMI of 31 has bony shoulders and wears a size 10.

rice cakes are not filling. Look at slimming world. No cal counting, just stick to plan, Which is generous, especially with the new changes, my husbands consultant always moaning about the WLI its scary actually how many are on this now... She is against them. Husbands work pals mum died from using them as got pancreatitis and did not recover. Look at slimming world. It does work and I am surprised how much you can eat of the right foods for health. If you are not going to then try 1300 cals as you can not function on 1000 thats not healthy!

It's remarkable how many people have 'personal' connections to one of the 2 people in the UK who died of pancreatitis whilst taking Mounjaro specifically for weight loss.

A bit of data jiggery pokery means that if the deceased had 50 people in their life and each of those had 50 people, you're down to each of those 'I know my friend's neighbour's hairdresser's dog's dentist' coming up with a 1 in over 13,000 chance of not being a liar actually knowing somebody and not repeating stories read in the paper as though they had intimate knowledge. You're more likely to conceive and give birth to identical triplets than that.

AlbieJiggered · 09/07/2026 16:39

@Wickedlittledancer , she is underweight on paper but might not be if she is of lean and slight build.

I'm a lean build and to not be fat at a BMI of 25, I'd need to be training hard for hours every day so I was solid muscle.

No it’s not me it’s you . I was merely commenting about the misconception that small people with a higher bmi always look fatter than taller people , which you have helpfully debunked here . When my bmi goes below 24 people start asking if I am ok and even my manager pulled me aside and told me I didn’t need to lose any more weight etc . when I did before . Honestly you can try and tell me I look fat all you want . I just don’t agree

Summervibes83 · 09/07/2026 16:43

hiddenforest · 09/07/2026 08:21

BMI of 28 is barely overweight tbf and I can’t see Mounjaro being approved for that.

I sympathise OP. All the ‘well you shouldn’t be hungry!’ posts just miss the point. Either I’m consumed with guilt for breaking my diet or I’m feeling deprived. It’s a lose lose.

Voy and Med Express do it for 25+ now.

I'm NOT obese. ;-)

I have a 32 inch waist - well within healthy range of waist to height ratio. As another poster observed, I'm wearing size 10 to 12 fixed waistbands depending on the shop. I DO have weight on my tummy and thighs, but...

Tell you what else I have. Big boobs, wide hips, long legs, and muscles from my strength training.

BMI is not useful for me. It was never intended to be. It's a population level measure. Fine, whatever.

I refuse to shell out hundreds to decimate my muscle and bmr further. I can’t afford it with adult children to support. Also, at some point I’d need to stop it. The more permanent solution is for me to learn to live with hunger.

If you use it correctly you don’t decimate the muscle or your BMR - just keep exercising as normal to maintain muscle and make sure you don’t use it as a vehicle to starve yourself with but to remove the cravings that lead to the binges and misery

Wegovy is less than £70 a month on Voy if that’s any use. I just up my protein and do weights to save muscle, I’m also in a calorie deficit and it does make it easier. I can go for a run without needing to binge later in the day.

I wouldn't be able to afford 70 pounds a month. I don't think that a lot of people can

On my current salary, I can just last on the money I have to the end of the month

lovecotswoldsliving · 09/07/2026 16:54

It really is horrendous.
Food is suddenly everywhere and you feel so hungry, your stomach may begin to eat itself.
Then you turn a corner. You lose some weight and you realise you can do it.
You can definitely do this
Keep going and flipping good luck x

canuckup · 09/07/2026 16:54

Totally agree. I have been really good for the last two months and granted, my skin looks good due to all the veg, but I reckon I've only actually lost about 4 pounds???

It's really hard

I think this is a reflection of women's clothes sizing being rubbish! According to actual clothing charts, a 32" waist is a size 14-16. The fact you can fit into size 10-12 trousers just demonstrates how poorly clothes are sized. I too can fit into clothes much smaller than size charts indicate I should be able to. But my waist isn't actually that size.

I have no comment on whether you look thin, fat, or anything else though! Everybody looks different and I can't see you. Health wise, a waist to height ratio is more useful in many ways than BMI, and you say you are within the healthy range for this so I'm sure you're fine.

To loose weight we have to eat so few calories. Which is a struggle for people

That's why it's so harder to lose weight than gain weight.

It took me six months to lose four pounds. Then I ate more than I normally would at Christmas and put four pounds on in two weeks. I was so sad

Agreed 1000% re UK sizes. For reference, all my clothes come from either Sainsbury's or Oliver Bonas. And trousers are more often a 12 because of my hips - fixed waistband skirts are a 10.

To be fair I think it is quite unusual for someone to have a bmi of 31 and be a size ten you’re a bit of an outlier I’d suggest. You must have a lot of muscle.
