MPs who trigger by-elections shouldn't be allowed to stand in them: Politicians pissing people around for their own ends.

What the fuck is Farage thinking, pissing people about like this? I'm pretty sure he wasn't happy at Burnham using the people of Makerfield for his own political purposes and now he's doing the same thing?

And how exactly is it 'taking on the establishment'? Yeah, him and his five million pounds 'taking on the establishment'. He is the fucking establishment. Rich twat who manipulates the rules to suit his own ends, hobnobbing with other rich twats and calling in favours whenever it suits.

What exactly is this pantomime achieving apart from a pause in the investigation into his finances?

Fuck off.

They're all up to something and it's always the men. Arrogant, self serving tossers if I'm being honest. I'm only interested in what Kemi has got to say lately. She's the only leader who stays focused.

It was all part of his speech wasn't it? He seems to have got you well riled up.

He's a tedious lying grifting shitbag who is most likely trying to dodge investigations into his dodgy finances. And he's potentially the next Prime Minister.

The real question should be why aren't you riled up?

Although I don't understand why winning an election before the investigation into potential corruption is complete would give him any more legitimacy than he already has.

I was responding to someone asking why we were happy no one else was standing. Other big parties standing would give the election and him a legitimacy that won’t exist if only a man with a bin is his competitor. That’s what I was meaning. Not that he gains anymore.

Farage should rename himself Count (my millions) Weaselface.

Weasels should not be insulted, have some respect and don't compare them to Mr Farage.

He doesn't live rent free in my head like he does so many on Mumsnet. He's not the only one on the make.

Not a fan of restricting who's allowed to stand for election. There have to be some rules but it's better they're kept to a minimum. Yes, this whole shebang is annoying and I don't like paying for it but it's a less bad option than telling people they're not allowed to vote for someone who would otherwise wish to stand.

Plus there's a fair chance he's going to lose to or only narrowly beat a bin, which should serve as a deterrent for the future.

Well no, but he didn’t need to stand.

He already had his seat, his mandate, his “people.”

Thats why it’s an obvious nonsense.

He didn’t run for a seat he already had.

It’s like me resigning from my job tomorrow and reapplying just to prove my boss still likes me. Fucking needy much.

He’s already got a seat, perhaps he should consider popping to Clacton and sitting in it.

lol to all

and also yep

He's also arguably responsible for Brexit which has been an absolute shitshow, damaged our economy and has poisoned our politics for the last decade.

Oh if it were only that he were corrupt.

It is indeed, yes.

…and may the Count be victorious!

He’s got to win one at some point, right?

ConBatulations · Yesterday 21:24

A Martin Bell candidate would be good but Count Binface may work. Would he be allowed to wear his bin in the House of Commons?

Good question. Do they have rules about what you can wear on your head? Maybe he could say it’s part of his religion 😂

I read on twitter that convention dictates hats are removed.

Fifthtimelucky · Yesterday 21:54

I loved Count Binface’s manifesto at the last by-election

The best pledge was “I will cut your taxes and raise everyone else’s”. I’m sure we can all get behind that!

Farage is heading for the largest majority of any MP, which is amusing.

Depends how many people turnout in an election that's a foregone conclusion.

Portakalkedi · Yesterday 22:08

There's no doubt Farage was wrong in accepting this money and not declaring it, but funny how Angela Rayner didn't resign for fiddling her tax, Starmer etc didn't resign for receiving clothes etc, etc. Surely what's wrong for one is wrong for all - but of course Farage gets much more of a kicking as the other parties want him gone.

Rayner resigned her posts for the tax thing? And Starmer has resigned as PM.

The suggestion that people don't want those two gone or they haven't had any sort of kicking for their actions is bizarre.

Renaming HS2 FFS1 would surely also be universally popular.

The difference is the scale. A few thousand versus millions. I’d hope no one as rich as Starmer is going to be bought for that - obviously he shouldn’t do it to avoid the look of corruption.

Another different is Starmer did declare most on time but his wife’s dresses were declared late.
Farage didn’t declare his at all.

Is it that he will be able to say well everyone knew everything and they voted me back in, which could dilute any ruling from the standards committee? It's all batshit anyway. I really hope he loses and disappears from public life.

TooLittleTooLate2 · Yesterday 23:09

Also I would love if Jon Harvey/Count Binface were elected to parliament. We all need cheering up and sadly he would probably be a much more serious prospect than some of the current lot.

noblegiraffe · Yesterday 23:24

The Greens have just confirmed that they won't be standing a candidate, so none of the major parties or Restore will be standing.

HOWEVER, Laurence Fox has just announced that he will be standing. So it will be two joke candidates and Binface.

OP posts:
WhatWouldJeevesDo · Yesterday 23:37

There should certainly be a means of blocking an MP doing this when he’s under investigation. If he’s re-elected, Farage may end up facing another by-election triggered by a parliamentary suspension and enough constituents wanting one.

To the people of Clacton: make your vote Count!
