Delivery charges

AIBU or have delivery charges skyrocketed lately?! In the last few days I’ve paid £5.95 for ASOS standard delivery, £5 from an online clothing company for standard, and I’m seeing £8-9 for next day delivery now!

Yes they have, but the delivery expenses have rocketed with fuel etc.

But when I’m sending things it doesn’t cost me as much! I had to pay to send a return, via inpost. £2.95. The same via asos is £5.95!

Yes they have. I tried to order a shirt from sports direct… £4.99 shipping. Ok, I’ll click and collect… £4.99! M&S are also charging for click and collect. Why??

BashfulClam · Today 07:39

Fuel, wages, insurance, overheads…all have risen so the costs have gone up accordingly.

Honeyhonayboo · Today 07:39

They have but in recent years the minimum wage has gone up significantly, NI costs have risen and fuel has gone up hugely.

And then when you get there, they’re literally just picking items off the shelf for you to take home 😂 ridiculous

Isn’t that because an ASOS return includes a return fee though?

But it’s not gone up accordingly.

Take for example a dress I’ve got coming via Royal Mail tracked 48. £3.65 for me to do it. £5 for the same service from an online store. They’re profiteering.

I suppose on the plus side it’s encouraging me back to the high street. The £3 bus fare is cheaper than the shipping now. Maybe the high streets will return.

No I mean the inpost postage to me is £5.95 via ASOS, but for me to send something via inpost it’s only £2.95

Sadly my local “high street” only has a new look with about 6 items in it and a yours clothing. Nothing even remotely suited to a person in their 20s!

But you’re comparing next day delivery with ASOS to other services that aren’t next day. Of course it’s going to be higher.

Retailers are obviously trying to put barriers in place to people ordering things they know they aren’t going to keep.

Edited

How depressing. My tiny high street is mostly charity shops but thankfully we have Kingston not far away and it seems to be a thriving shopping area! Everything from art shops to clothes to books. I was really impressed recently.

If you read my post, it’s not next day. It’s the exact same service.

are you paying wages to yourself? They are paying staff in the warehouses, NI etc. it will costs more than just the postage price as there are other overheads.

If you were a business employing other people to deal with sending stuff out, the charges you would pass on to the client would be £2.95 for the cost of delivery, PLUS a cost for the employee's time PLUS the packaging costs (cardboard box and bubble wrap, or padded envelope, address labels etc) PLUS a bit of profit.

Overheads that are already built into the cost of the item to begin with

But the £5.95 deliver on ASOS is next day?
There is regular delivery for £4something.

Of course they are. I just think it’s awful that they’re doubling or even tripling the cost of the shipping

It definitely isn’t, I ordered with the £5.95 delivery and it’s standard delivery now.

Still beats going to the store physically because

  • you won't be able to get parked (I drove to a shopping place this weekend, took a tour of the full car park and then just had to come home - not a single space)
  • they wont have it in stock
  • they have it in stock but not your aize
  • the item is only abailable online
  • etc
  • etc...

I don't bother with physical stores anymore. And if shipping becomes so expensive it makes me pause then I will prob just consume less, which is no bad thing....

But overheads have gone up massively so they need to make the costs back somewhere.

OddBoots · Today 07:54

Could they be trying to basically add an insurance that covers the cost of the requirement to offer returns for distance selling?

I only realised recently how many people order lots and send loads of it back, that must be expensive for them to process it all and check things are suitable to re-sell etc.

Do you have a warehouse and staff at home to pack and send the parcels for you?
