AIBU to take a sick day when I feel overwhelmed?

I never take a day off and manager really strict, when I’ve gone in obviously unwell there’s been no effort to tell me to go home. I haven’t been feeling too well mentally. My marriage is breaking down and my kids have been unable to sleep due to the heat. I just feel fed up. I could go either way not going in one day this week and just focusing on myself. What excuse would you give? I’ve never called in sick only for my kids and I don’t want to use my kids as an excuse. What would your reason be? What’s put me off in the past in the details they want of your sickness so it gives me anxiety and I just end up going to work. I really feel depressed but don’t want mental health to be a reason as I just don’t want them knowing. They won’t be supportive and will just use this information against me.

Take 2 days with a sick bug.

Ridiculousradish · Today 06:08

Take a few days off. Rest.

Take 2 days with a sick bug.

I rather just take one day. What could the reason be? I won’t be paid for the day I take off.

I won’t be paid as I’m not permanent contract. I only get paid for the days I go in. I need it to be a reason that only covers one day

Food poisoning if they wonder what from a then say a chippy, also food poisoning can do you in for a good week and you can self certify for 5 days, do it.

Ponoka7 · Today 06:11

Are you going in today? If not they'll just think that you stayed up to watch football.

Stomach bug or food poisoning, can be one or two days.
Possible infected tooth, with you waiting for a call back for an emergency appointment. Sprained ankle/knee, after doing something in loft, or a slip on stairs.
Migraine with full on flashing lights and needing to lie down.

Frumpitydoo · Today 06:12

Sickness and the squits. Pad it out with stomach cramps, a sleepless night and temperature.

Cerc · Today 06:12

Only want be something for one day. Yes I’m going in today but thinking for one day I just need a rest.

Oh shit, yeah, i'd go in today, then treat yourself to a couple of days later this week? Don't want to get caught up in the football skiving thing.

youalright · Today 06:13

I wouldn't today they will think you stayed up for the footie. Go in today so you don't feel well and then call in sick tomorrow

Lostthetastefordahlias · Today 06:17

Take Friday off with a stomach bug? Less likely to be questions on your return then as well as it will be Monday rather than the day after.

Cerc · Today 06:17

I just get anxiety calling in sick that’s why I go in when I’m clearly not well. They make you feel like crap for calling in sick. I really wish I didn’t have to work and could just ready for a day

Migraine.

getridofthedamnboxes · Today 06:21

I was going to say migraine too. That is often just a one-day issue.

SummitWrong · Today 06:23

Get your partner/whoever to call in for you if you can't You've got an awful migraine and there's no way you can possibly travel to work.

I would question though - is a day enough? It is rare that a day will magically fix whatever is causing your level of overwhelm currently.

Bluehels · Today 06:25

Don’t take today off as a random one day because everyone will think you stayed up for the football!

Teeteringonthebrink45 · Today 06:28

I had several “migraines”
when my marriage was breaking down - perfect 1 day absences. I then got signed off for 2 weeks with stress when we actually separated (though I did get sick pay, I’m sorry you don’t).

LondonCheesecake · Today 06:29

How long have you been there? It sounds like a while. I fully understand your need for some time for yourself and that you feel overwhelmed and don't need anything else on your plate but if your relationship is breaking down you may want to look at getting a job with greater flexibility and security.

Do you have any leave you could use instead? If you're anxious about phoning in then you might not find the time off as beneficial as you hope

pouletvous · Today 06:34

Migraine. No need to explain too heavily if you are a temp

LadyChilli · Today 06:41

Do you need to give a reason? Any time I have to call in sick I just say I'm not well enough to work today. Not giving details means that if it's ever something sensitive, I can use the same approach. If asked just say you'd rather not go into details but that you anticipate being back tomorrow and if for some reason it does drag on you'll see your GP. Obviously don't do it today though.

By the way, as an adult it is pretty normal that work will not send you home if you come into work ill. The assumption would be that you are capable of making the decision for yourself. That should not mean that you feel awkward about calling in sick if you need to. Whether you get paid or not, but especially if they aren't paying you!

RonnieOmelettes · Today 06:47

Something you ate….youve been up all night on the loo

Larrythecatforpm · Today 06:50

dont take today off they will assume it’s down to thr football. Especially if you just take one day off.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · Today 06:53

Echo the others with the football last night I really wouldn’t today. Maybe later in the week with concerns over heat exhaustion symptoms or similar…

ShishKofte · Today 06:53

Do you work with food?
Anything with sickness & diarrhoea they might make you take 2 days off.

Migraine is the way to go.
Be quiet and off colour today at work.

I hope things settle down for you soon, it sounds tough.

redboxerclub · Today 06:54

Upset stomach. Sick bug etc no one will event know
