not the first time i have done this and the teachers have always looked really pleased before

but

after buying the wine this morning i met another school mum on the walk home and told her where i had been/what i was buying and she thinks that it is offencive to buy someone wine you dont know that well

1/ i should not be taking it onto school grounds
2/ they may not like wine and be offended that i think they do

in a bit of a panic now incase this is the case, last day of nursery is this afternoon!!!

The other Mum is living on a different planet!!!! No objections to wine in our school, that's for sure!

MaryAnnSingleton · 25/06/2008 11:47

homemade card would be lovely I'm sure !

belgo · 25/06/2008 11:49

kerryk · 25/06/2008 11:57

Oh Shit. It's end of term tomorrow and I am not prepared.

I'm not sure that Aussie teachers would go for wine, different ethos there. I might have to start a thread, although it's already 9pm and I think I'm too late [sweats].

Job lot of cupcakes from patisserie for all staff? But then they'd clearly not be homemade and I'd be a mum who doesn't make an effort and just throws money at stuff (DD's school is heaving with overly-minted parents).

Bugger. I think I could throw some cupcakes into the oven now and with my culinary ability make it look like DD did it [better idea].

[shit shit shit]

Riddo · 25/06/2008 12:04

Last year I asked ds teacher if she wanted red or white and she was thrilled. This years teacher is getting nothing as she's been horrible to ds and me all year.

All teachers like cards made by the children (in my experience anyway).

arfishy · 25/06/2008 12:04

I was just about to turn on the oven to make the emergency cupcakes when I remembered the extremely egg allergic child in DD's class.

[panics]

Sorry, am hijacking.

[goes off to start panic thread]

kerryk · 25/06/2008 12:04

my mum used to make a fruit cake for each teacher at the end of term, my brother used to eat his on the way to school.

his teacher must have thought my mum did not like her as my teacher always had a nice home made cake and she got bugger all.

Think homemade card would be lovely

Wine always a top present unless you know that the person doesn't drink / is an alcoholic etc. You are always likely to have guests at some point, or can recycle it when you go to someone's house. Incidentally, I am pg and very happy to be given wine, to have a glass from now or to save til after the birth.

i got my childs teachers a bouguet each they were chuffed but they were just so good with her and she has autism so they had to be extra good

MaryAnnSingleton · 25/06/2008 12:14

the LSA who does OT with ds is getting something from Hotel Chocolat...

WendyWeber · 25/06/2008 12:19

Is it very sad of me to feel chuffed that I understand

"the LSA who does OT with ds"

???

[always wanted to be in a secret gang]

MaryAnnSingleton · 25/06/2008 12:20

WINE IS THE BEST PRESENT FOR TEACHERS!!! if only everybody knew that when they set out to look for those glittery soaps and overburnished brass candlesticks and Quality street [ ungrateful cow emoticon ]

alicet · 25/06/2008 19:44

Only read op.

BOLLOCKS is all I can say - if I was a teacher know I would be much happier to get wine than loads of candles, smellies and other tat.

That is harsher than I mean - any gift is thoughtful relaly but unless you know they are teetotal wine is as good a gift as anything else

alicet · 25/06/2008 19:46

What I meant is that if you don't know the person well there is a chance they will not have use for your gift whatever you get and I am intrigued as to why the other mum thinks that wine is offensive to give? Unless it's a muslim school or something!

Hulababy · 25/06/2008 19:49

Don't worry about kerryk. When I was a teacher I often got wine as a gift; it was very much appreciated We have also bought DD's teachers wine before - and again always gone down well.

Advanatage of wine - you never get too much of it (duplicates don't matter), it is a consumable so no need to find a home for it, and if it isn't to you taste it is still handy for when you have guests visiting.

itati · 25/06/2008 19:51

I don't think it is offensive to buy someone wine but I think as the present is usually from the child, I would choose something else.

CaptainUnderpants · 25/06/2008 19:51

I work in playgroup and we get presents at the end of term and Christmas - the thought is very kindly appreciated and we are very grateful but wine is THE BEST !!!!

Blimey what planet is the other Mum on !

Be assured that you ill not be talked about as 'THAT Mum who bought in wine ' but rather 'oooohh THAT LOVELY Mum that bought in wine !
