Is this plan for a hotel tonight a waste of money ?

I am planning to watch the football in my city later with friends - would usually get a bus in and share a taxi back - only a 15 min journey. Total cost maybe £15.

I have noticed there’s some cheap budget hotels deals going - £40 for one in the centre. I’m thinking it could be a plan to book this and save faffing with taxi’s after incase it’s really busy, it also means I could sleep through until 10/11 rather than be woken when DH gets up at 8 for the nursery run (he isn’t a football fan). I start work at 1 tomorrow.

DH says it’s a waste of money/pointless getting a hotel where we live and I should just come home and sleep in the spare room?

Sounds eminently sensible.

DidntLikeTheEnding · 05/07/2026 10:18

I think it's worth the "extra" 25 quid, I would do it.

TinyBlueDent · 05/07/2026 10:20

What are the check in and checkout times?

Make sure they know you'll be arriving late. And what time will you need to vacate the room in the morning? Might be 10am.

CornishCornetto · 05/07/2026 10:20

I’d do it. See if one of your friends wants to share to bring the cost down?

DollopOfFun · 05/07/2026 10:21

It's 25 quid for a lot less faff. Just do it.

From 4 check in 11 check out which is good.

Check out time in Premier Inns, Travelodges etc is 12pm. Never heard of a 10am checkout in a chain hotel in years!

Sounds very sensible to me

If it's a Premier or Travelodge, you can usually pay a bit extra for a late checkout.

TheLurpackYears · 05/07/2026 10:26

Sounds like a properly good plan. Of course DH isn’t happy that you won’t be available in the morning. Too bad.
Once got a hotel room and used it for 5 hours when I was massively sleep deprived and had a nap knowing that ex h wouldn’t be able to let the children wake me up.

£40 is very cheap, is it actually a decent hotel where you'll get a good kip or is it a shithole?

If check out is at 11am, what time will you want / need to be up?

Personally I'd pay £25 extra for two more hours sleep.

Is money very tight? Will this add a lot to the overall amount you spend over the afternoon / evening / night? Is it family money?

Would you be 100% happy if it was your DH staying out?

So many questions!!

It’s a budget national chain, will do the job as somewhere to rest my head! I’ll set my alarm for 10.30. No won’t cause any issues with finances as isn’t a big amount extra and I wouldn’t care if he did it.

In that case enjoy your night (well early hours) of peace!!

Are you the poster who's DH didn't want her to go to the pub to watch the match?

He seems very opinionated about what you do. As long as you can afford the hotel, I don't see an issue if that's how you choose to spend your money.

EgregiouslyOverdressed · 05/07/2026 10:55

I anticipate that taxis will be like New Year's Eve tomorrow morning; you could be waiting hours unless you have a reliable firm that you can pre-book with. The hotel room seems a no-brainer.

This. Plus there could well be some questionable driving from those who've had little sleep, are either over excited, or crashingly disappointed, plus may have been drinking.

The roads are probably worth avoiding in the early hours of tomorrow morning.

AgnesMcDoo · 05/07/2026 11:01

It’s a great plan

chocoluv · 05/07/2026 11:07

I think staying in a hotel 15mins away from home is silly and a waste of money.

However, I think taxis will be quite difficult to get so I would ring one now and ask the price and ask to rebook it.

If they’re more expensive or fully booked then I’d go for the hotel but if not I’d just get a taxi home.

How are your friends getting home?

LlynTegid · 05/07/2026 11:09

Seems ok though I'd be watching it at home if I wanted to see it myself.

HelenaWilson · 05/07/2026 11:13

If op has the money to spend on a treat for herself, and that's how she chooses to spend it, it's not a waste of money.

In her place, I'd go and have a nice breakfast/brunch somewhere after checking out, just to round it off.

hahabahbag · 05/07/2026 11:14

I’d be anticipating having to walk home as taxis will be hard to come by, I can’t imagine many taxi drivers wanting potentially drunk football fans in their cabs so won’t make themselves available. Unless the whole journey is by motorway you can’t live very far away and it’s likely to be getting light - our bus company is laying on a 4am night bus which do not usually run on Sunday/Monday nights

Squirrelblanket · 05/07/2026 11:15

I think it's a good idea, we often do this when we go 'into town' for a gig or something as it saves either having to leave early to get the last train home or paying a lot for a late night taxi.

zingally · 05/07/2026 11:15

I would.

Some years ago, I decided that staying at a hotel after concerts etc was the most sensible thing for me.
It started after I went to a concert in Birmingham (45 mins on the train from me) one evening. Planned to get the last train home. Last train was cancelled, and I was stranded in Birmingham. Managed to get on my phone and book a last minute hotel.
Learnt that lesson, and next time a show happened, I booked a hotel for the night. But being cheap, I booked one a little bit away from the venue. But in the cold light of day, it was further away from the venue than I'd thought, and through a rougher part of town. It was a nervous walk back to the hotel that night.
I learnt that lesson, and next week I'm going to another show in Birmingham. I've booked a hotel that I've staying in before, that I know is only about a 1 minute walk from the venue, across a busy pedestrianised square.
For the sake of about £40 on top of what I'd usually pay, it's worth it for the security and added peace of mind.

It’s difficult to know what time the match will finish - too many variables such as extra time, weather delays etc. So pre-booking difficult.

They will be relying on taxi’s as they have earlier commitments tomorrow morning.

Over an hour walk otherwise I’d do that - no late buses either sadly.
