Can you lie on a sunbed?

Whyarepeopletalkingaboutchristmas · 05/07/2026 09:21

When I was younger, I could lie on a sunbed for hours-big stack of magazines/books, music, a cocktail…heaven!
Now, not so much. I can’t sit still for long enough, can’t really concentrate on my book for long, even in the shade-def can’t lie directly in the sun
I just find it quite boring now-also can’t drink anymore as feel crap afterwards
Is it age-late 40’s, peri, having kids, what?

All the things I once loved doing, I can’t

I used to lay by the pool, book in hand years ago but I think having my son changed that. Now I can lay by the pool for a couple of hours but not much more than that. I can sit and read for hours normally, but it seems not by a pool these days! We tend to go out in the morning, lunch, sit by the pool for a couple of hours, swimming and back to our apartment!

I can usually manage an hour then I get bored and there's always someone in the vicinity that starts to irritate me (loud talking, scratching, endless eating, bending over thong wearer, rearranging their bollocks etc).

I do manage a bit longer if I have a room with a private pool so it's just DH and I chilling out in peace so I tend to book those these days.

Loved your comment about men rearranging their bollocks. Real howler.

Can they do it one handed inside and outside of their shorts and swim wear?

Or, as some men boast about the real low hangers. Tie them in a bow?

No I can't anymore either, nearer to 50 than 40. I find it boring, and don't like being in direct sun/burning. I tend to spend more time in the pool nowadays and join in with the water aerobics etc.

ParsonMaybold · 05/07/2026 20:46

I can if I am completely in the shade and I can get into a pool every so often. If I have my kindle, regular cocktails and snoozes, I can easily while away an entire afternoon.

Our children are grown, we deserve it.

itsnotfairisit · 05/07/2026 20:59

I can. But I need an umbrella or shade

winnieanddaisy · 05/07/2026 21:22

I’m over 70 and can still lie on a sunbed as long as I have my kindle to read .
I also take a cheap , plain lilo with me and cover it with a towel . It makes it much more comfortable for my arthritic joints 😂.

supercrone · 06/07/2026 02:52

On a beach in Greece, yes, for a good few hours interespersed with swimming, eating a little, a walk. By a pool, no. Get bored.

BitOutOfPractice · 06/07/2026 03:02

I suspect the inability to concentrate is down to social media. I can do it yes but concentration is a struggle. I still like a drink though 😬

I’ve gone the other way around - never really did a lie by the pool holiday until I was in my 40s and never saw the appeal, but on a recent rare AI holiday I said to DH I could see us coming away, once the kids have moved out, to an adult only resort to sit by the pool and read for a week, as I finally got it.

I think screens have really dented my attention span but oddly since starting weight loss injections I seem to be able to focus on reading again.

That's interesting! Another reason for me to try them...

thornbury · 06/07/2026 07:37

I live in a country where you can sit by the pool at least 90% of the year. I have leisure membership at a hotel 5 mins walk from my house, pool is temperature controlled, always enough sun beds, they all have umbrellas and tables. Me, iced drinks, Kindle...bliss.

Oh but drinking - no - anything more than 3 drinks results in massive hangxiety the next day now unless I’m in a very particular set of circumstances/with certain people.

Oh my god this is the first time I have heard the word hangxiety and I totally get it!!!!! I couldn’t have given a hoot at anything when drinking but now even if I only have a couple I worry I have upset people; done the wrong thing or behaved in a certain way. I didn’t realise it was actually a “thing” - I thought it was just me!

JMSA · 06/07/2026 08:48

I do know what you mean. It’s a bit like when you go for a bath and think ‘is this it?!’
I was relatively late to getting a smartphone, but I do think they’re a part of it. I find it more difficult to focus on a book these days, whereas I’d have spent hours reading a few years back.
Mostly though, I love relaxation and would happily give it a go! If sunlounging abroad though, I definitely need shade and water dips.

LoveHearts69 · 06/07/2026 11:10

I used to think I enjoyed this in my early 20’s but once I discovered travelling and exploring I soon realised I found it really boring!

Now in our late 30’s and we have two young children who would not enjoy this either so we rent various air b&bs, hire a car and travel around the country we’re visiting exploring it as much as we can instead. I get why other people choose it as an option with young children - but spending most of our time in an all inclusive resort or on a cruise is our idea of a nightmare.

Once we’ve had a day of exploring, we’ll take it in turns to go for a swim in a quiet pool at our accommodation, or sit on a balcony with a book for an hour while the other parent takes the children and that feels so much more rewarding and relaxing than a whole day in the sun ever did.

KrazyKatty · 06/07/2026 11:10

Nope, I could never lie on a sunbed for more than 20mins max. I’d get bored and fidgety.

Beach holidays are probably the worst type of holiday for me second only to AI resort holidays which would be my idea of pure HELL.

That is exactly it. When I’ve said it to people they look at me like I have ten heads and say “but you’re not a horrible person, why would you think you’ve said or done something horrible?!” and I don’t have an answer - my brain just goes over every interaction and tortures me! So I tend to stick to just a couple of drinks unless I am somewhere/with people I feel very secure with - so far this seems to mean at my parents’ house with immediate family, haven’t tested it anywhere else lately!

minipie · 06/07/2026 11:22

Yes if I have a good book and I can dip in the water every so often to cool off.

Also as long as there are no irritations like flies or wasps, loud music, someone smoking.

It does need to be a really good book though!

Yeah, I can relate. I get really uptight about these things too and am a stickler for consideration.

NormasArse · 06/07/2026 11:38

Not a sunbed, but I recently had a lovely two hour snooze on a picnic blanket in a forest. I’m 60, and I snore, so probably for the best.

ToffeePennie · 06/07/2026 11:43

Yes I absolutely can. It’s been years but the thought of doing absolutely nothing, reading a book and doing a crossword is plenty of activity for me.

mondaytosunday · 06/07/2026 12:56

I never could before in my youth - so boring! I’m 64 now and can if in the shade I can. I don’t do it at hotels - I mean at the beach where you rent a bed from the beach bar/restaurant. I have to be in the shade though.

Lemonapplepear · 06/07/2026 14:24

The same has happened to me. Screens have something to do with it plus I find applying suncream all over more and more of a faff - I'd rather cover up and sit in the shade

Not everyone gives up on self respect just because they're a bit older.

I don't think waiting for minimum wage servants to funnel cheap cocktails into your gullet while you lie on your arse shows much self respect either. Try walking to a bar.

Is this why so many people insist perimenopause makes you fat??

Accepting ageing isn't losing self respect. There's only so much you can do and then it costs a fortune after 60. Or you just look like an older person who has botox.
Where's the bar to walk to by a secluded lake? Are you telling a carer assistant, who works 12 hour shifts, they can't decide on the holiday they need?
Not everyone in hospitality is on minimum wage. Even in this country the domestics earn more than HCAs. However, they are glad of the work. At 14 in Morocco and Turkey etc, the boys are often thrown out and if they can't find work, they turn to crime or starve. Working the beach, serving drinks isn't a bad life, to them and who are we to patronise?

That poster is a troll honestly not worth your time,

BoarBrush · 06/07/2026 15:35

I used to be able to spend hours lying and reading, now it's probably a max of an hour over two weeks holiday. You'll find me propping up the pool bar on the sunniest side though.

Topseyt123 · 06/07/2026 16:01

Given my kindle/a good book, a pool or the sea to dip in and out of then yes, I absolutely can lie or sit on a sunbed for many hours.

I'll spend large parts of my holiday doing that, but also do like to mix things up a little by going to explore local villages, towns, a city etc. on other days.

I'll be 60 in August.
