Can you lie on a sunbed?

Whyarepeopletalkingaboutchristmas · Yesterday 09:21

When I was younger, I could lie on a sunbed for hours-big stack of magazines/books, music, a cocktail…heaven!
Now, not so much. I can’t sit still for long enough, can’t really concentrate on my book for long, even in the shade-def can’t lie directly in the sun
I just find it quite boring now-also can’t drink anymore as feel crap afterwards
Is it age-late 40’s, peri, having kids, what?

All the things I once loved doing, I can’t

I think I could if I had a holiday and didn't have to deal with my teen with SEN.

I miss reading. Used to plough through books before kids. I average one book a year now as I'm so on edge and busy all the time.

I don't understand this at all, never have. Lying down getting as many premature wrinkles as possible. By the side of a secluded lake or sthg maybe (for half an hour). But on a bit of plastic alongside a thousand Germans beside a chlorinated pool? Mental.

ChocolateCinderToffee · Yesterday 19:13

No, and I think it's because I've got so much Stuff buzzing around in my head. The only time I can lie still at all is first thing in the morning, while still in bed.

'I can’t sit still for long enough, can’t really concentrate on my book for long,'

Addiction to your phone/internet.

We're all afflicted with it to a degree. It's ruined us.

Who serves the cocktails if you are by a secluded lake? The OP is late 40s, the ship has sailed on premature wrinkles. Once she's fully through the menopause she won't give a shit.
OP, once through the menopause you'll be able to drink again. It sounds as though you have brain fog, again your concentration will come back.

I do not agree that looking at one's phone is a bigger waste of time than lying like a whale on a Norwegian's barbecue for hours on end

BrendaSmall · Yesterday 19:23

Oh I love it!
up and usually on the beach 04.30 ready for sunrise and then pop to restaurant for breakfast, back to the sunbed, don’t actually lay still for long as it’s to the bar for water, in the sea to cool off, back to sunbed …… repeat, till 5/6pm 🤣 All whilst being in the sun, I don’t do shade
in my 50’s and have never been any different 🤣

Not everyone gives up on self respect just because they're a bit older.

I don't think waiting for minimum wage servants to funnel cheap cocktails into your gullet while you lie on your arse shows much self respect either. Try walking to a bar.

Is this why so many people insist perimenopause makes you fat??

What on earth have I just read?

Wow. Someone has issues. 🤨

MyEasterBonnet · Yesterday 19:28

I also find it really boring. I can’t get comfortable for long to sit/lie and read a book, and I can’t see my phone in the sunlight. I’ve started listening to audiobooks though, and that’s been a bit better, but I’ve been daft and bought those big headphones and they’re not that comfy when it’s hot.

It's a very weird British practice

palron · Yesterday 19:43

It is indeed a British practice to sit all day on a sunbed. The Germans just reserve them, and hardly use them.

What lying in the sun, catching some rays while reading a book? While being fat? 🙄

ThatPeppyMauvePoster · Yesterday 19:46

I think the middle age plus small kids means I am ALWAYS on edge, just a little bit. Because there is always something to be done. And I know that if I lie here for an hour, that's an hour of work/housework/parenting that I have to do later.

GameOfJones · Yesterday 19:52

Interestingly, I'm the opposite. I used to absolutely hate sunbathing and would only sit in the shade on holiday (very pale skin) but I've hit my late 30s and suddenly seem to have become a solar-powered being 🤣. I can't do it all day but spent a couple of hours this afternoon sunbathing in the garden and the same yesterday and it was bliss.

I think it's coincided with DDs being older, they're 9 and 7 now so can amuse themselves for a couple of hours and I can get some time to myself. Sun lounger, iced coffee, bottle of water and my book for an hour or two.... heavenly!

Ideally on holiday we'd be out and about exploring in the morning, back for lunch and then a lazy afternoon.

OMG50soon · Yesterday 20:08

Try an audiobook, only way I can lie in the sun now….definitely getting old 🤣🤣

Unexpectedlysinglemum · Yesterday 20:09

Have you ruined attention span with phone use like me

BountifulPantry · Yesterday 20:10

Can’t sit in the sun- get too hot and sweaty and bothered. I like sitting in the shade with a book to an extent. I’d rather be pottering around the garden.

Octavia64 · Yesterday 20:10

If I swim every now and then yes.

otherwise can’t do a whole day.

if provided with book, snacks, and somewhere to swim (pool sea or lake) then yes easily

Sheepsmellnice · Yesterday 20:12

I agree I'm exactly the same.

I do find it even madder that everyone respects the towels. Why not just move the towels what's going to happen.

LightningTree · Yesterday 20:17

As long as I have a good book and some shade I can happily spend an hour or two on a sunbed, especially if it’s beside a nice pool so I can alternate swimming and reading.

Thanksforyourlackofthought · Yesterday 20:40

Nope. Never been able to.I'm on hols for the experience, sights, shops etc.

thenewaveragebear1983 · Yesterday 20:43

I just find my sit bones hurt too much, even on the garden furniture today I was suffering with what I affectionately call “flat ass syndrome”
