What time is reasonable for children to be playing loudly in the garden at the weekend

Ok, loaded question at the top. We have very loud neighbours with young children (2,4,7) who seem to shout and scream in the garden from (what I consider) quite early.

We have young children also but are constantly woken by garden noise.

So, what is a reasonable time in the summer to chuck your kids out into the garden to play?

I take my toddlers in the garden from about 7/8am. If they cry or scream or moan or anything excessively go back inside (We are currently learning quiet voices). We have such little good weather I want to make the most of it. They do not have screen time etc. I love seeing them bare footed being children outside. It is my garden, I am going to use it!

12?! lol.

Yeah. Not everyone wants to start their day with my kids. Some people have gone out of their way to make sure they arent up at arse o clock with kids.

GabriellaFaith · 06/07/2026 02:50

8am, although I'd hope for 9 on a Sunday!

Arthurnewyorkcity · 06/07/2026 03:47

8am is reasonable imo. I have a terraced house so can often see or hear my neighbours either hanging washing or having a smoke etc. They're usually awake. On occasions they havent appeared, 8 is still acceptable time for adults to be up. There is such a thing as ear plugs.
Sunday 8:30 id say. I think your neighbour at 6:45 is very unreasonable, even more so if not supervising.

11am? I'm not far off thinking about heading back in for lunch then!

hangonwhilstioverthinkthis · 06/07/2026 07:21

@TulipsAndPancakes 🤣🤣🤣 this would have to apply to everyone though...DIY enthusiasts, lawn mowers, people with irritating pets....

The noise act lists quiet/night hours as 11pm to 7am....think this may increase to 8am on weekends as far as construction is concerned but not 100%. Outside of that it all feels like fair game tbh. Mr next door can mow his lawn at 7am, down the road are entitled to let their insanely loud dogs out around the same time, and kids can be playing!

Personally think 9am. When it’s Easter and we do the egg hunt in the garden I don’t let them out till 9. Our NDN has had her DC out shrieking at 8 before but I think it’s too early even though we’ve been up ages by that point. We have couples without children on the street so it’s a bit selfish.

5am

Are you her neighbour?

dontmalbeconme · 06/07/2026 08:55

9 am on a Saturday, 10am on a Sunday. Always to be brought in immediately if they're screeching, screaming or acting in any other kind of anti-social way.

Are your bins collected every morning?!

weird take 😂😂

no, but the logic is that if it’s ok one morning why not other mornings? Same with building noise, it 6 days a week.

Tell me you don’t have toddlers without telling me you don’t have toddlers…

All children are toddlers at some point. I have kids.

SJM1988 · 06/07/2026 09:06

Not before 8am in our house. Closer to 9am if I can push it.

Our neighbours think nothing of letting their kids out at 7am and as last as midnight screaming.

And you made sure they got up at a time that meant they didn’t want (need!) to go into the garden until 12… my toddler has lunch at 12 and naps at 1230.

No, I'd take them out if they couldn't be entertained inside. Tbh, most of the time on a weekend, we'd be out by 10ish doing something, anyway. But on days we were not, I'd not let them outside in our garden to noisily play before about noon. For one of my kids, that means no garden at all at that time because volume control isn't their strong point.

That then gives me the leverage to ask neighbours to be mindful at times and for the most part, I've never had issues with people not being conscious of my kids being next door.

From 12 up until pretty much bedtime, they can let rip outside. They're allowed to be kids, but only in the most social hours!

8am. Maybe later on Sunday.

ToffeeCrabApple · 06/07/2026 10:05

8/8.30 in this hot weather when they may have to be kept in for hours later on.

To be honest though I wouldnt allow mine to be screaming etc out there at any hour.

10/11? Lol half the morning is gone. We spent my eldests baby years trying to get him to sleep longer of a morning. Nothing ever worked. Even tried two sleep consultants who said that to be honest, there was nothing at all they could suggest to get him actually sleeping past 6am.

Lots of children are naturally larks regardless of what time they are put to bed.

WaltzingWaters · 06/07/2026 10:16

8am for very quiet play (and they’d be back in if they weren’t quiet). 9:30 ish for “normal noise levels” play. But regular screaming and shouting not at any time.

CardiBTEC · 06/07/2026 10:38

DS4 came out with me this morning at 7am to have a cup of tea/cup of milk on the patio. Then he pottered around with me whilst I watered the plants. He knows to chat to me very quietly, almost in whispers, though and knows if he’s loud at any point he goes straight back in.
He’s a good egg but wakes at 5 so trying to keep him in until 7 is hard as he loves being outdoors 🥴

LilyBunch25 · 06/07/2026 10:39

Lexibletheflexible · 05/07/2026 08:12

Honestly, I dont let my kids outside making noise in the garden until 12ish. If it's one of those days and they want to be outside, we will go to the park. But no I don't have them outside from 730am. People work unsociable hours and weekends are their only chance for a lay-in.

I wish you were my neighbour 😫

Another one I wish was my neighbour 🙈we had approx 5hrs of severe screaming a few weeks ago and when politely approaching were told they'll do what the f* they like.

Firefliesdancing · 06/07/2026 10:53

None 😂 mine are allowed in the garden from 9.30am on a Saturday…11am on a Sunday (Most of the close is like this, became a bit of an unwritten rule) unless there with their Grandparents on the Sunday they get picked up at 9.30am for Sunday service at 11am they were curious about God so they go to see what Granny and Gramps do at Church. On an evening usually from 5 till about 7. Summer holidays roughly same time sometimes til 8pm, if they are getting too loud/giddy they do get told to calm down.
