AIBU to refuse a Year 9 staying up for the 1am match?

Is this unreasonable?
Apparently "every other mum" is letting their school year 9 kid watch the 1am match tonight and phone in sick to school tomorrow morning then go in at lunch.
I've said no to staying up to watch it. Starts at 1am, it will go on till 3:30am, or later if extra time!
DS has to get up at 6:30 for school.
DH says let him, keeps going on about once every 4 years experience, it's only 1 night, etc. And he says it will be the final England match - they'll be knocked out by Mexico tonight so there will be no other England games to watch after tonight.
DS badly needs his sleep and at 14 he still needs a solid 11 hours to function.
Is anyone else letting their DC watch it live tonight?
AIBU?

I don't understand stupid idiots letting their kids stay up to watch football. it is only football.

Not at all I honestly think your one of the very few sensible parents; education is far more important they might see it now but if e gland lose & play like muppets they’ll be saying I’m glad I didn’t watch it &!you’ll be the hero of the moment x

I think not!

He will remember this. He’s 14.

Stick it on at 5 or 6am and watch early morning. Late for school will be common tomorrow anyway

No one remembers what happened in the round of 16 after a few weeks. Don't be so dramatic.

NameChanger206 · Yesterday 21:02

I’ve agreed to wake my 10 and 8 year olds up at 1am to watch it….they are welcome to watch it if they can stay awake. YABVU with a 14 year old.

He’s 14, not 4. One night of disrupted sleep isn’t going to kill him.

No but it will set the following days off -course, so it depends if anything important should be happening on those days.

Stupid idiots are hard to deal with generally.

Thankfully most of the people on this thread who are allowing kids to stay up sound very sensible.

It’s not the football he’ll remember but the fact that his parents refused to allow him.

Toomanyclothesinthecloset · Yesterday 21:18

Let him watch it, life is for fun!..he won't forget it if you don't...I think you are being a bit mean tbh

What are you going to do when they leave for university and start living on their own?! Phone them up and ask them if they’re tucked up in bed at 8pm?

A 14 year old isn’t that far off and should be being taught to take personal responsibility.

Lovelyview · Yesterday 21:24

I'd tell him he goes to bed at the usual time. He can set an alarm and watch the match on his own if he wants but he has to get up and go to school as usual. You are not controlling op, you are trying to be a good parent.

Menopausalchunk · Yesterday 21:26

Life’s too short, let him stay up, nearly the school holidays anyway.

Idontcareboutthestateofmyhair · Yesterday 21:34

I read it as age 9 and i still thought you were unreasonable!! Stop letting shit rules rule your life and your kids lives..fs a kid age 14?? Damn right he can stay up and watch the game.. life is life.. he'll always remember staying up to watch that game.. otherwise he'll remember you being the reason he couldn't watch it win or lose.

can he get up at 5am and watch on iplayer?

Absolutely not the same!! 🙄

It is 4-7 years away before he’ll be in university/independent!

This week does he have an exam? Any important school assignments?

I thought a PP had a very good idea about DS getting up extra early and watching it on catch - up, before school.

Seriously?! You really don't get it do you and I can't help hoping you don't have any children! 🙄

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · Yesterday 21:37

We let our kids who are younger stay up for the Scotland games (after a nap, we woke them up) but we knew we would be out soon and also it’s not like we will be in the World Cup for a while. Idk if I would have let them stay up to watch England. DS tried to pull a late night saying “but mummy you’re from England”… like nice try pal, you’re not though.

Maybe put him to bed then wake him up? Btw ours fell asleep and got carried to bed before half time for Brazil so you might get lucky.

EDIT: oh, he’s year 9? Let him stay up. He’s old enough to deal with the consequences.

Springsummertime · Yesterday 21:42

Stop being so controlling! Let me him
watch it

He could be Year 9 and nearly 15? Uni could be only 3 years away!

Calm down! It's only millionaires kicking a ball. The world will still be turning tomorrow.

Challenger2A7 · Yesterday 21:46

Maybe it's just time to stop attaching so much importance to a bunch of grown men getting paid ridiculous amounts of money to kick a ball around a field.

Allthatwegotisthispalebluedot · Yesterday 21:46

Surely a 14 year old can cope with being a bit tired at school and just have an early night on Monday? It’s good practise for the working world/university when you need a bit of resilience and can’t just ring in sick whenever you’re a bit tired.

i would let him watch. It’s a big match, and it’s fun to do things a bit out of the ordinary!

3peassuit · Yesterday 21:46

I’d let him. It’s one night, he’ll be tired next day but so will lots of his classmates. They’ll manage.

cantbebothered101 · Yesterday 21:50

Cannot get over how ridiculous it is in the UK about about school time at the end of a school year. The World Cup is every few years and think of the excitement and memories for kids. If it was Ireland we’d have all the kids up!!
