To block GBNews from my parent’s TV?

goslowly · 02/07/2026 09:03

My parents retired 4 years ago. They’re both in their 60s, healthy, happy, comfortable financially.

Since they’ve retired they have been sucked in by every single thing they say on there. They can spend an entire day sat in front of the TV getting angrier and angrier. It’s to the point that if Starmer comes on the TV, they shout about how he should be killed.

it’s genuinely starting to concern me. You can’t have a rational conversation with them about anything. I miss my parents, how they used to be before all the conspiracy and anger took over.

I’m genuinely tempted to block it from their tv using parental controls and just pretending it’s some weird fault in their telly. They’d not be able to fix it.

Most of the country think Kier Starmer is a knob regardless of GB news. It's thier house they can watch what they want. It's not healthy for anyone to just sit watching and TV program all day though, do they not have hobbies?

The telegraph

I have family who read it and they worry in London. We live in another city and are used to it so don't worry.

A lot of TV is drivel, you have to be picky and record quality stuff to watch without ads IMO, you can"t teach this to people in their 60"s though.

omg I need to go to a Meeting immediately
Good evening. My name is Godmum and I watch drivel on TV. I need help

yup they purely LOVE to wind up their daughter.

This reeks of sickening ageist discrimination. They are adults and entitled to their views.

Treetreetreetree · 02/07/2026 19:44

@halfpastten My relative has gone from being right wing and happy to terrified and expecting an invasion. Her grandchildren avoid her because her extreme racism upsets them so much. She recently cancelled a holiday because it was on the coast and Muslims are apparently swarming in with guns.
GB News is dangerous. Nothing to do with ageism.

No, my glee that GB News is protecting women and girls is far from disgusting what IS disgusting is anyone having a problem that this channel is reporting on this.

GB News are not protecting women and girls.

That glee that you feel is a result of the dopamine hit manufactured by GB News. Sensationalism, hatred, violence and sex. That's your glee.

You could choose to get your information about these cases from an actual News source. One that will give you the facts as they are available, giving you knowledge about legal and material reality. And maybe a bit of empathy for the victims? Useful ways to help?

But no. You prefer the dopamine hit on your sofa. That is not support for victims, stop kidding yourself.

Right wing ✔️
Racism ✔️
Muslims ✔️

Almost a full house there.

If it is genuinely that extreme, then perhaps something else is happening. Are they showing other signs which concern you, or is it just their political views which bother you?

Talking positively about people being killed is not a ‘ political view’ !
GB News and Reform actively promote hatred and real harm.
Im very happy for my friends and family to have widely ranging political perspectives but this is horrible. I’d get a dementia check, if no medical reason behind such behaviour then I couldn’t continue a relationship with them.

Would you feel the same if they admitted to being Nazis ? If not , why? Surely it’s just a viewpoint that they are entitled to?!

They're watching TV, not invading Poland ffs.

Even the likes of Tommy Robinson 'only' demand that we should 'send them back' or get them out of the country in some other way - even they don't actually suggest that we kill them.

You are very naive! Have a look at TR social media and read the comments. People openly and regularly celebrating migrants drowning in the channel . The likes of GB News set people off with a diet of misinformation and fear mongering and let them spiral in to utter hatred.
Also see Lucy Connolly!

I got all of that today, thanks. I can see the case isn't really important to you though.

Dementia check? Fucking hell - this gets worse.

tiki9 · 02/07/2026 20:50

What you consume will affect how you feel, especially if it's all day, every day. I'm currently reading very chilled book about nature and meditation, and I feel relaxed afterwards. If I consumed that type of content, or videos of cute puppies playing all the time, that's how I'd feel. If I was consuming content about things being scary, I would feel scared. If the content was about positive news and people helping each other, I would feel positive about people and the world. It does affect your world view, regardless of what type of content it is.

PomplaMouse · 02/07/2026 20:51

Social media and GB News are the two worst things to happen to the UK in my lifetime.

They have radicalized people into angry husks of the former selves, and all to serve the interests of a wealthy few.

Don't forget Ricky Jones. You.know the one who shouted "cut all their throats" and the stupid woman at his side clapping like a sealion. She was some sort of union official.

I think that might be the best way forward before just cutting contact. We’ve got some rules already - no politics at big events because they just cannot ever stay respectful. The second you present any other view they pull out the “you’re a bigot!!! You’re a fascist!!!”, and then if that doesn’t work it’s the “I’ve seen a lot more than you have!!!”

Another good example is I mentioned hanging some England bunting. I’m a football fan and wanted to show some patriotic spirit. I had it with me when I dropped in with some bits I’d picked up for them, at their request.

mum: “oh you can’t put that up, the council have banned it”

me: “no, they haven’t, one council in Bristol asked people to not climb lampposts to hang it as that’s a danger”

dad: “no the banned it because it upsets the immigrants. It was on the news”

and so starts a half hour rant about how we’re losing our “values” to imaginary invaders. It’s sickening.

me: “no, they haven’t, one council in Bristol asked people to not climb lampposts to hang it as that’s a danger”
dad: “no they banned it because it upsets the immigrants. It was on the news”

To be fair, you are both right:

In Bristol, the Green-run city council told residents not to put up England flags for the World Cup because they would not be “welcoming” and posed health and safety dangers.

Also:
The leader of Cambridgeshire county council [Lib Dem] said the displays of patriotism were “not appropriate” and that using ladders to put up the flags was reckless and could “put lives at risk”. Lucy Nethsingha, said displaying flags was only allowed if it was done in a “safe, inclusive way and with permission”.

Tim Bearder, leader of Oxfordshire county council [Lib Dem] said the flags “caused fear” in the county and were not allowed unless flown on private property. “We have a clear responsibility to keep people safe and ensure our public spaces are welcoming for everyone,” he said.

Really? What about covid or the 2008 financial crash, or terrorist attacks? Hillesborough disaster? Grenfell fire?

Yes, worse than all of those.

(Tbf, there's a good case for Covid)
