To block GBNews from my parent’s TV?

My parents retired 4 years ago. They’re both in their 60s, healthy, happy, comfortable financially.

Since they’ve retired they have been sucked in by every single thing they say on there. They can spend an entire day sat in front of the TV getting angrier and angrier. It’s to the point that if Starmer comes on the TV, they shout about how he should be killed.

it’s genuinely starting to concern me. You can’t have a rational conversation with them about anything. I miss my parents, how they used to be before all the conspiracy and anger took over.

I’m genuinely tempted to block it from their tv using parental controls and just pretending it’s some weird fault in their telly. They’d not be able to fix it.

That’s not what I’ve said. I know reading comprehension is hard for your lot, but do try and keep up.

Wow. True colours shining through.

@goslowlyi think we must have the same parents! That channel is poisonous - even my young teens think so and they couldn’t care less about politics. My parents have always held certain views but they have gone off the scale. It’s exhausting listening to them and constantly telling them that their comments on certain groups of society are inappropriate. I now just tell them that I don’t want to talk anything political with them at all.

LuckyHazelFox · 02/07/2026 17:51

The ageism on this thread is unbelievable; patronising beyond belief. If the parents turned this back round on their adult children's choices, all hell would break loose. You see this a lot on the state pension threads too.

It’s just so sad to see how they change so quickly

Don't block. Leave it up to them to choose if they want to watch. I wouldn't ever watch the shit they spew on there, but if others want to, that's on them.

That there were no riots in Belfast and no one was burnt out of their homes.

They habitually lie that other media and particularly the BBC are not covering stories. Even when the stories are all over the news.

Do you have a link to the clip where GB news actually said that?

Why do you need a link? Do you ask GB news for links for the shit they post?

There was an interesting, if basic, discussion on QE earlier, you may know all about the effects of QE but many viewers don"t, and it goes to the root of many of our present problems.

Gary Stevenson talks about this, how the money from Covid ended up driving the gap between rich and poor. He has a podcast called Gary's Economics

A lot of TV is drivel, you have to be picky and record quality stuff to watch without ads IMO, you can"t teach this to people in their 60"s though.

I know it's terrible isn't it. People over 60 should be banned from owning a TV if they're not going to watch quality stuff. 🙄

TheGreatDownandOut · 02/07/2026 18:26

No, you can’t do that. You have multiple options available to you

  1. engage in mature, rational conversation with them. Suggest they get news from other sources for balance
  2. avoid talking about politics altogether
  3. stop seeing them (especially effective if you’d like to live in an echo chamber)
CadiFfan · 02/07/2026 18:26

Id happily sit with my dad watching GB News

Are there really people talking about people in their 60s like they don’t have a clue Confused some of the sharpest people I know are in their 60s!

I wasn't asking you for a link so what's your problem?!

Ahwelltoobad · 02/07/2026 18:32

I would block it. They are being brainwashed.

I wish I could have blocked my sister's YouTube, before she became a ranting antivaxxer during covid.

chichi2026 · 02/07/2026 18:31

Obviously not 😂but worry not, they now have a link:

Shock horror, programmes hit with a miniscule amount of Ofcom complaints. Reality TV gets this frequently. Are you going to stop watching reality TV?

PrimeSeason · 02/07/2026 18:40

I sympathise, OP. My husband has moved increasingly to the right as he’s got older and it’s such a turn-off.

But I don’t think it’s right for you to be controlling their telly in their home either.

See a bit less of them. And/ or I think I would explain kindly and respectfully that some of their opinion can feel out of step with your generation’s views and it’s a shame to see them get angry and upset. That it makes for a tension on the air that no one needs. So you’d rather talk about what’s going on in your and their world, not politics.

I have a lovely boss and he leans left and he often says he watches GB News to get the other side.

GB news does not advocate killing Starmer or anyone on the left politically.

If anything I hear left leaning people calling for Trump, Elon and Terfs to be swiped off the face of the earth.

Sometimes they have tipped over to calling for killings.🤯

Mostly they push lies, hate and division in the UK.

GBN has called for killings? Would love to see the (non emotional) evidence.
