To block GBNews from my parent’s TV?

1000 replies

goslowly · 02/07/2026 09:03

My parents retired 4 years ago. They’re both in their 60s, healthy, happy, comfortable financially.

Since they’ve retired they have been sucked in by every single thing they say on there. They can spend an entire day sat in front of the TV getting angrier and angrier. It’s to the point that if Starmer comes on the TV, they shout about how he should be killed.

it’s genuinely starting to concern me. You can’t have a rational conversation with them about anything. I miss my parents, how they used to be before all the conspiracy and anger took over.

I’m genuinely tempted to block it from their tv using parental controls and just pretending it’s some weird fault in their telly. They’d not be able to fix it.

They were literally created for propaganda. Do your homework.

Who GB news?

As a woman I can support who I like. So you're not only trying to control your parents, you're trying to control women's voting choices by shaming them. Not a good look all round.

Good points, the OP is not looking good here.

Clearing cookies isn't really invading someones privacy though. You don't even need to look at the cookies, just clear them. It's the cookies themselves that are invading the persons privacy. Presumably they know that's what she is doing, I do it as part of general fixing my mum's computer when I visit (I am asked to do this before anyone starts).
But I don't know anyone who thinks cookies are a good thing, it's not like messing with someone's settings.

Is your mum about 90 that she can't sort her own computer.

Settlersa · 02/07/2026 16:39

There are some very odd younger people on MN who are far too invested in what their parents do. I wouldn't want anyone coming in fiddling with my TV and computers.

There are some very odd older people who think it’s perfectly acceptable for a parent to wish harm on their adult children because of differing political views

You can't block their access. You can have a word. Tell them you're worried that they seem to have changed such a lot in their views and are not the parents you remember. That you think listening to toxic news all day isn't good for happiness and wellbeing and just makes them angry. That obviously it's up to them, but if that's what they want to do, can they not talk to you about it, because you find the conversation unpleasant.

I mean sure, you can, but personally I wouldn’t pretend to care about women and children when you support a party who has a convicted domestic abuser in their ranks and a leader who cosies up to Trump.

Are you upset by how quickly it is unravelling for Labour, they are really looking out of touch now?

nocoolnamesleft · 02/07/2026 16:44

Refer them to PREVENT.

Seeing as I’ve said I’m a Lib Dem, not a Labour, supporter - no.

But I also think in the real world people don’t really feel like this. As reflected by the copious elections reform have lost recently.

You can however tackle them being radicalised and attacking you.

The way to stop them attacking you is to stop being with them or start ignoring what they say. If you genuinely think they are being radicalised to the point of being a risk to the public then Prevent is your route. You cannot attempt to control them, They are adults.

Tell me a political party who didn’t have a domestic/sexual abuser in their ranks. The Lib Dem’s were famous for it!!!!

Yes, the child must be the issue.

Hmm, to different levels yes. I'm really interested in media biased and it's clear that there always is one but my issue is that GB news is on a whole different level.

It’s quite literally the crux of my post. My parents have said, on numerous occasions, I deserve to be shot for my opinions. Multiple posters on here have defended that.

Entitled to your opinion, as are we all, and something OP could stand to learn!

It seems to make you unhappy and them unhappy so probably best not to, you could probably just see them at Christmas or something like that.

There's having an opinion, which is completely valid and that's why there are so many different political parties, and being indoctrinated into lies and misinformation.

They took over 1,000 seats and 12 councils in the recent elections?

They are adults, don't be ridiculous. That would be beyond controlling.

All of this. Absolutely not on. I'm very surprised you think that would be OK to do.
