Should I dump my boyfriend because he won't stop eating crisps?

I'm in a relatively new relationship (7 months) after over 2 years of being single with some dating disasters along the way. Everything seems great on paper, he is kind, has a good job that pays well, not bad looking, treats me well and never allows me to pay for anything. For context, I am 28F and he is 32M- we both live separately at present. I would like to settle down soon.

I'm unsure if I am self-sabotaging, but some of his eating/snacking habits disgust me, to the point that I think I've developed the ick. This came to light properly on our recent 2 week holiday-prior to this, the longest we had spent together was about 3 days. He eats at least 3 packets of crisps per day and not the sophisticated type i.e kettle chips, think more Skips/monster munch/Nik naks/cheesy wotsits/space raiders. He doesn't wash his hands after eating the crisps and requires prompting to do so. This often results in him having disgusting synthetic crisp dust all over his fingers and fingernails.

Even more disgustingly, after he's finished with a packet, he arches back his head and empties the remnants of the crisp crumbs into his mouth. It's almost as though he cannot bear for a single scrap to be wasted. But the most disgusting is sometimes, after finishing a packet, he will blow up the packet like a balloon and pop it. This has resulted in me being sprayed with crumbs. I've also found scrunched up crisp packets wedged behind his bed, almost as though he can't be bothered to walk to the bin.

We recently went on holiday to Spain and it was mortifying-he didn't try any local food and just wanted to eat British food, McDonald's and crisps. We went to the supermarket and he loaded up the trolley with crisps. I haven't said anything yet, he is keen to start looking for a flat to rent together, but I just can't help but thinking I would prefer a man who doesn't eat over 3 packets of crisps a day and doesn't smell like pickled onion Monster Munch or cheesy wotsits. Is eating all of those crisps a dumpable offence?

I don't think there's any right or wrong here... it's just a question of how much it bothers you.

Member869894 · 01/07/2026 14:10

Actually op I've reread your subsequent posts.and I think he should dump you

WaltzingWaters · 01/07/2026 14:11

I LOVE crisps but even I am feeling the ick here. Wrappers down the side of the bed and being sprayed in crisp dust, yuk.
But the worst part is being so boring with food on holiday, that I absolutely couldn’t deal with.

In my opinion, there's nothing wrong with preferring a man to pay for me and having traditional values. I want the man I marry to be able to provide for me and our future family- I don't want to be penny pinching when I'm on maternity leave or begging him for pennies.

So many of my dates have consisted of men expecting that I pay for my own dinner and glass of wine or worse, wanting to go for a walk like I'm some sort of border collie. I don't make loads in my job in the public sector and it is nice to have someone look after me and treat me from time to time. His family are very well off too. But he has been incredibly mollycoddled his entire life, has never really cooked a meal for himself and I had to show him how to use the washing machine. His mum does it for him usually (I didn't realise this until recently).

Good luck with that outlook.
No-one should be struggling during maternity leave if their partner has a good wage but in real life you don’t get away with being a princess either.
If you want a partnership with equal respect it has to work both ways.
You can dump him for any reason you like, you can’t ignore the icky feeling when it joins a relationship.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 01/07/2026 14:26

Is a sophisticated crisp not an oxymoron? Anyway I think I'd find out if he is prepared to compromise before dumping. If he knows the non-stop downmarket crisp munching behaviour is upsetting for you but carries on regardless whenever you are together, that might indicate an unwillingness to adapt and be considerate. It's not that the act in itself is so bad but not caring about the effect on you would be concerning. Likewise it would be unreasonable for you to insist on a complete ban if the crisps are his guilty pleasure.

drippingyethappy · 01/07/2026 14:27

Please dump him. You mention he earns well and is not bad looking. He deserves someone much nicer than you.

petermaddog · 01/07/2026 14:28

kettle ones are just normal ones

GlomOfNit · 01/07/2026 14:38

So he permanently smells of synthetic cheesy crisp dust? His ASS would be dust!

Sorry, but of all the low-key unattractive traits in men, I'm not sure I can think of many that are worse. Being ingrained with pickled onion Monster Munch dust, smelling of it, TASTING off it, all the time - in my mind, on a par with foot-picking, sofa tooth-flossing, nose-picking in public.

Most of us enjoy a packet of crisps now and then, and there's room for the more disgusting synthetic end of the spectrum, but 3 a day and not washing hands? How old is he, five?

hettie · 01/07/2026 14:48

If this is real you are not compatible.

JFDIYOLO · 01/07/2026 14:54

You've got the ick ... It won't go away, so it's a case of putting up with it if he's worth it.

I too do the tipping the last atoms out of the packet.

AgileMentor · 01/07/2026 14:57

Never in my life read a comment section where so many people are that far up their own arses they wouldn’t be seen dead eating a skip. Your poor husbands and partners honestly.

Bigreddog25 · 01/07/2026 15:05

Have you seen the size of a pack of space raiders? 3 packs is the equivalent of a normal sized bag!

In all honesty- yes dump him. You sound like an absolute nightmare to be around.

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 01/07/2026 15:05

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 29/06/2026 23:45

I'm not going to lie, the crisp snobbery made me laugh, like Kettle chips are any less crap for you than a pack of skips or monster munch.

But if something this minor is giving you the ick, then you're obviously not that into him.

DP has a good few gross habits, pretty much every human being does. They don't bother me much because I love her.

They are better for you on some level. Less processed shite, not so many artificial ingredients, but obviously still quite high in fat. Give me a Kettle Chip over s horrible NikNak.any day 😬😳

TheIdlerReturns · 01/07/2026 15:12

Thank you, thank you, thank you! This post made me laugh out loud, especially the part about him throwing his head back to catch all the crumbs and then popping the bag. I'm sorry, I'm not much help. Sit him down and gently tell him your relationship needs an embargo on crisps for it to succeed.

Morepositivemum · 01/07/2026 15:12

Nobody in the world should be with anyone who calls them disgusting. Imagine he wrote a similar post about you? And the kettle crisps/ ‘lesser’ crisps thing is absurd- it’s like the people who call ‘wine/gin time’ and consider themselves over people who drink beer or alcopops- they’re all alcohol- you’re not better because you choose one over the other!!

EmeraldShamrock000 · 01/07/2026 15:21

Sounds like he is an adult who once was a child with sensory issues around eating. Crisp’s and chips are the safe foods for a lot of children with sensory problems, he’s probably spent years avoiding foods.
My own son only eats dried foods, he hasn’t had a sauce or squishy meal since he was a toddler.

Chips Crying While Eating GIF

7 months and you have the ick. Dont waste any more time - let him go find someone who loves monster munch crisps as much as he does.

ForDucksSake · 01/07/2026 15:44

I think you should dump him because you obviously don't really like him, if this is bothering you so much after 7 months. Either let the man enjoy his NikNaks or dump him.

MRB21 · 01/07/2026 15:47

The only eating British foods abroad would put me off. I love crisps so the other not so much 🤣 but yeah always smelling like wotsits /pickled onion monster munch is a bit off putting as well as his immaturity with the crisp packets 🤣. I think like you said you’ve got the ick. Ick won’t just go. You’ve also voiced the ick. Listen to yourself. End the relationship. Go find someone else you actually love as when you do you won’t give a shit about the stuff that has given you the ick here. Life is short OP don’t waste it when your heart sounds like it’s not in it here

CaffeinatedMum · 01/07/2026 15:51

I love cheap crisps and have been known to eat three packs in a day but I give my self the idk afterwards if I don’t immediately wash my hands, let alone all the other stuff your guy does

BeKhakiReader · 01/07/2026 15:53

If it gives you the ick it gives you the ick, but I think you might be single for a long time if someone eating crisps is enough to put you off.

DimwittedSkater · 01/07/2026 15:54

Skips and pickled onion flavour Monster Munch? Man has excellent taste. Keep him.

Skodacool · 01/07/2026 15:56

LittleArithmetics · 01/07/2026 13:48

I'd dump someone who didn't want to eat local food on holiday, and also someone who didn't know how to use a washing machine or had their mum doing their washing.

This also makes me think that his mum sounds as though she could become the MIL from hell!

SpreadsheetLife · 01/07/2026 16:04

It sounds as though you have the ick...

CluckYeahCluck · 01/07/2026 16:08

It's a No No for you personally, so dump him. We all have things we find disgusting and why shouldn't we honour our own feelings and our personal lines in the sand ?
