To wear sandals as an everyday shoe?

I have never considered this as an issue before I joined this website.

But I wear Birkenstocks pretty much everyday in the summer. Either Milano or Arizona style. I don’t have gorgeous feet but they’re clean, don’t smell etc.

Work, BBQs, basically anything I can get away with them, I’m wearing them. Is this really that bad?

I think the problem (predominantly) are feet which are unwashed and are smelly and generally uncared for. Other countries who are accustomed to the heat seem to manage a lot better.

This is an insane statement. British people don't care for their feet and the reason is our weather isn't isn't sunny enough 😂

What I'd like to find out is how do you know strangers feet are unwashed and smelly? How close are you getting to strangers?

I've got an insanely sensitive/good sense of smell. And if someone rocks into work first thing on a morning with that smelly feet smell you can lay good odds that they've not washed their feet.

My feet don’t smell, but I do have some dry skin. It’s just persistent.

But you trim your toenails and you have moisturised so you don't have layers of hard skin?

If you don't then you should do. It's all part of self care. Some people (not saying you) seem to think it ends at the ankle which is odd.

I put foot cream on with socks when it’s not too hot to sleep with socks on. For some reason I just get really random dry patches around my nails. No layers of hard skin as far as I can tell

But when 'feet' smell its usually the socks/shoes that are giving off the odour due to soaked in sweat etc. isn't it
Uncovered feet don't really smell, unless you have some kind of infection.

Quite possibly to both the footwear and an infection. When someone is wearing sandals the niff's a lot more obvious. Some people seem to be very unaware.

Mumsnet has a lot of bizarre views. Don't let it bother you. So long as your feet are clean/well cared for, no issue with sandals.

There really is nothing worse than having sweltering feet in these temperatures

SquirrelGG · 29/06/2026 09:42

Wear them if you want to OP, some MNers are seriously odd, I wouldn't be taking sartorial advice from them.

MigGirl · 29/06/2026 09:48

We have a no open toes shoes at work policy mainly for health and safety. But I wouldn't object to wearing sandles if we where allowed.

Your poll is currently at 93% think you’re not being unreasonable.
There will be some thread titles which disproportionally attract posts from the 7% minority who are anti sandal.

Anyway, on this one, what would Jesus do?😂

Not ‘Mumsnet’. A small proportion of people posting on MN on any topic imaginable have bizarre views!

Fair point

I have a professional office job. My sandals go on at the beginning of May and come off at the end of September. I have a pair of Birkenstock two strap jobbies under my desk and slip into them on arrival. Might put the smarter ones on for a meeting.

I paint my toenails every three weeks and every morning and evenong when I put on handcream, the excess is rubbed into my feet. No dry skin, no yellow toenails, healthy, 66 year old feet.
