To wear sandals as an everyday shoe?

nicewarmbliss · 29/06/2026 07:20

I have never considered this as an issue before I joined this website.

But I wear Birkenstocks pretty much everyday in the summer. Either Milano or Arizona style. I don’t have gorgeous feet but they’re clean, don’t smell etc.

Work, BBQs, basically anything I can get away with them, I’m wearing them. Is this really that bad?

Wait… is this a trick question ?

Splashduck · 29/06/2026 07:21

No - you’re comfortable - that’s fine.

unless for safety reasons where you need steel toe capped boots such as a building yard - wear what you are comfortable in.

Octavia64 · 29/06/2026 07:23

No.

if you are going somewhere with a dress code that includes feet (eg building site or similar) then stick to the dress code.

No, I don’t know if It’s the heatwave or what but so many people have been saying this week that it’s not acceptable! I never saw it as an issue

I too am bemused by the objection to sandals in the workplace which I have only ever encountered on mumsnet.

I’ve just seen someone object to them anywhere, which is what sparked this question!

My workplace used to say no open toed sandals but closed toes were fine.

i think this sort of thing is common for workplaces.

People on here ? Or in real life ?

Because on here people are generally weird AF and would argue that black was white.

Im sure sandals are considered as acceptable daily footwear by the rest of the population.

I think our rule is they can be open toe but need a strap at the back (hence why I bought the Milano version), but I don’t think anyone would actually get pulled up on it unless they were really violating the dress code in every way

Workplaces have a responsibility to reduce the risk of slips, trips and falls which is why they might ask you not to wear slip on sandals at work.

But I agree with PPs about a lot of Mumsnetters having weird ideas about what's and isn't acceptable.

I can absolutely see why they wouldn’t be appropriate in a lot of settings, but I don’t think it’s the big deal a lot on MN seem to make it.

People say a lot of things on here

Some of it is not worth listening to.

And yes that includes what you've read about sandals not being acceptable

AgnesX · 29/06/2026 08:02

I think the problem (predominantly) are feet which are unwashed and are smelly and generally uncared for. Other countries who are accustomed to the heat seem to manage a lot better.

My feet don’t smell, but I do have some dry skin. It’s just persistent.

@nicewarmbliss many people where? You haven’t said the setting where the sandles are deemed unsuitable.

I mean on here - so many people say they’re not appropriate for work, or just in general!

They are kind of ugly!

They are kind of ugly!

But being ugly doesn’t make it unacceptable to wear them!

I love my Birks but not for work. I’m pretty sure my office has a closed toe only policy (even though we are dress down).

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 29/06/2026 08:11

I have to wear steel toe capped work shoes at work but every other second in spring and summer I'm in walking sandals (I walk to work) or slightly fancier sandals. I wear flip flops to the allotment. I honestly don't care what other people wear on their feet, or what people think of what I wear on my feet.
I've only ever seen the "no sandals" dickery on here.

That’s fair enough, we don’t have that rule

I have three pairs of Birkenstocks and I live in them in the summer, including to work (with dresses).

socks1107 · 29/06/2026 08:14

I wear sandals all summer unless it’s raining. I live in them and where them to work and everything else. I have had jobs where I can’t wear them and respected that rule but my current work place is fine

DappledThings · 29/06/2026 08:21

I wear sandals to the office. No issues whatsoever.

I find people wearing flip-flops mildly annoying because the sound of them detaching and rehitting their foot every step is horrible but that's a me problem.

Unless specifically prohibited there is nothing that makes sandals intrinsically inappropriate in an office setting or to many other events.

I've found some very odd beliefs on MN. This sandal one is weird too.

The other one I've read on here is you shouldn't be naked in bed because your vulva will be touching the sheets and then you'll have to wash them 😂
